CHAPTER 1: "You Shouldn't Be Here."
The elevator doors slid open with a quiet chime. Arielle Quinn stepped into the twenty-fourth floor of Black Enterprises, her heels clicking against the marble like soft thunder. Her hands trembled slightly, hidden within the pockets of her beige coat. She had told herself she was ready. That five years was enough time to bury the past. That she could face him and walk away untouched. But the second she stepped into that pristine, glass-walled lobby, her heart betrayed her. It didn’t just beat. It roared. A receptionist looked up from her desk and smiled politely. “Name?” Arielle swallowed. “Arielle Quinn. I have an interview. Executive Assistant position.” The receptionist tapped on her keyboard. “Ah, yes. Miss Quinn. Please wait in Conference Room C. Mr. Black will be joining you shortly.” Mr. Black. She hated how his name still sounded like a scar inside her chest. Arielle nodded, her fingers tightening around her purse strap as she turned toward the hallway. The last time she had heard that name, it was whispered in a dark bedroom with tangled sheets and broken promises. Damon Black—her first love. Her last mistake. And the father of the child sleeping peacefully in her small apartment across town. The conference room was cold. Sterile. She stood instead of sitting, afraid her knees would buckle if she got too comfortable. She had practiced her lines, planned her answers. She just hadn’t prepared to see him. Would he recognize her? Would he remember the woman he had kissed like a lifeline and left like trash? Or worse… had she meant so little that he’d already forgotten her? The door opened. She turned. And time fractured. Damon Black stood in the doorway, tall, tailored, lethal. Jet-black hair combed back with perfect precision. A charcoal suit clung to his broad frame like it was sewn onto him. His eyes—icy gray and sharp—landed on her, unreadable. For a long moment, he said nothing. Neither did she. His gaze didn’t flicker. Didn't blink. Just drilled into her like a weapon that hadn’t forgotten how to hurt. Then… one brow lifted. “You’re Arielle Quinn?” Her heart sank. He didn’t remember. Her throat tightened. “Yes, sir.” He stepped in, closed the door behind him with a soft click, and walked slowly to the head of the table. “You’re applying for my personal assistant position.” Not even a hint of recognition. Not even a flicker of the boy who once told her she was the only thing that made him feel alive. She forced a smile. “I am.” His eyes lingered. "You look familiar.” Her stomach clenched. She laughed—soft, deflective. “I have one of those faces.” Silence. Damon’s gaze narrowed. “Or maybe I've seen you in a nightmare.” It was a joke, probably. Cold. Slightly amused. But it landed like a slap. Arielle straightened. “Shall we begin, Mr. Black?” His lips twitched into something that wasn’t quite a smile. “Of course.” He questioned her with the efficiency of a man used to owning rooms. Her background, her qualifications, her experience. She answered every question with grace, masking the storm in her chest. Every time their eyes met, she felt her walls cracking. He was too close. Too familiar. And yet… terrifyingly changed. The Damon she knew had been wild and young. This Damon? This was a man carved from steel. Empty. Controlled. Dangerous. “I’ll be honest,” he said finally, leaning back in his chair. “I don’t usually conduct these interviews myself.” “Then why did you today?” she asked before she could stop herself. He paused. A beat passed. Then he looked her dead in the eyes. “I wanted to see if anyone still has the nerve to look me in the eye.” Arielle didn’t blink. “Apparently,” he added slowly, “you do.” He stood, walking to the window, hands in his pockets. “The job is demanding. You’ll work odd hours. Travel. Handle confidential matters.” “I can handle that.” He turned back to face her, something unreadable flickering in his eyes. “And what about secrets, Miss Quinn?” She froze. “I don’t like them,” he said. “They have a way of coming back from the dead.” She held his gaze, calm on the outside, screaming on the inside. “I don’t keep secrets, sir.” Another lie. Another price to pay. He walked toward her slowly, stopping just inches away. Too close. She could smell his cologne—sharp, masculine, intoxicating. His eyes dropped briefly to her lips, then back to her face. “You’re hired.” Her breath caught. “But one thing,” he added, voice lower now. “You report to me. No one else. You’ll be expected to follow my orders exactly, without question.” “I understand.” He leaned closer, his voice like a whisper dragged through fire. “You shouldn’t be here.” Arielle swallowed. “Why not?” He stepped back, giving her a smile that didn’t reach his eyes. “Because I don’t believe in coincidences.” Then he turned and left the room. She stood there alone, heart pounding, the air thick with something old and dangerous. She had told herself she could do this. But as the door clicked shut behind him, she realized something awful. He may not remember her… but Damon Black would destroy her all over again.
