Chapter one
THE STRANGER ON THE ROAD At 12:07 a.m., Maya was supposed to be thinking about getting home. Instead, she was wondering whether the man standing in the middle of the empty road was waiting for her. She slowed down. The stranger didn't move. He stood beneath a flickering streetlight several meters ahead, his dark clothes soaked from the rain. His head was lowered, and one hand was pressed against his face. Maya's fingers tightened around the steering wheel. Something about him was wrong. She reached for her phone. Then her car suddenly jerked. “What?” The engine sputtered. Maya pressed the accelerator. Nothing happened. The car rolled forward for a few more meters before stopping completely. Her heart sank. “You've got to be kidding me.” She tried the ignition. Nothing. Again. Still nothing. Maya looked through the windshield. The stranger was now looking directly at her. She froze. For several seconds, neither of them moved. Then he began walking toward her. Maya immediately locked the doors. The man stopped beside the driver's window. He didn't knock. He simply stood there. Maya lowered the window only slightly. “Can I help you?” The man stared at her. His face was difficult to read beneath the poor streetlight. “You shouldn't be here,” he finally said. Maya frowned. “What?” “You shouldn't be on this road tonight.” His voice was quiet. Almost like a warning. Maya glanced at the empty road behind him. “Why?” He didn't answer. Instead, he looked past her toward the back seat. Maya's uneasiness increased. “Who are you?” The man finally looked at her again. “Go back to your car.” “I am in my car.” “No.” His expression changed. “You should go home.” Maya stared at him. “Look, my car broke down. I'm not exactly here because I wanted to be.” For the first time, the stranger seemed to notice the dead engine. He stepped back. “Open the hood.” Maya hesitated. “I don't know you.” “You don't have to.” He pointed toward the front of the vehicle. “Your battery connection is loose.” Maya looked at him suspiciously. “How do you know that?” He didn't answer. Instead, he turned and walked toward the front of the car. After a moment, Maya stepped out. She kept her phone in her hand as she followed him. The stranger opened the hood and examined the engine. For several minutes, he worked silently. Maya watched him carefully. There was something familiar about him. Not his face. Something else. The way he moved. The confidence in his hands. The expensive watch on his wrist. He didn't look like someone who should have been wandering alone on a deserted road after midnight. “Are you a mechanic?” she asked. “No.” “Then how do you know what you're doing?” He ignored the question. A few seconds later, he stepped away from the engine. “Try it.” Maya returned to the driver's seat. She turned the key. The engine started. She stared at the dashboard. “It worked.” The stranger closed the hood. Maya got out again. “Thank you.” He nodded. She studied him. “You need a ride?” He looked at her. “No.” “You're standing alone in the middle of nowhere.” “I'll be fine.” Maya didn't understand him. “Where are you going?” He gave her an address. Maya hesitated. Then she unlocked the passenger door. “Get in.” He looked at the car. Then at her. Finally, he entered. The entire drive was silent. Maya tried several times to start a conversation. Nothing worked. Finally, she said, “I'm Maya.” The man turned his head slightly. “Alex.” It was the first time he had given her his name. Maya smiled faintly. “Nice to meet you, Alex.” He looked away. But something about his expression bothered her. He looked like someone who had just lost something. Or someone. Maya glanced at him again. “Are you okay?” “Yes.” “You don't look okay.” His jaw tightened. “I'm fine.” She decided not to ask again. A few minutes later, they reached his destination. Alex opened the door. Before stepping out, he looked at Maya. For a moment, his expression softened. Then he said something that made her blood run cold. “Whatever happens, don't trust everyone around your father.” Maya stared at him. “What did you just say?” But Alex was already outside. He closed the door and walked toward the building. “Wait!” Maya stepped out. “Alex!” He didn't turn around. She watched him disappear through the entrance. Something wasn't right. How did he know about her father? Maya returned to the car and sat silently behind the wheel. She had never mentioned her father. Not once. She looked toward the building where Alex had disappeared. Then she noticed something on the passenger seat. A black card. She picked it up. ALEXANDER SMITH Below his name was the logo of a company she recognized immediately. Maya's expression changed. It was one of the companies that had recently entered into a business partnership with her father's corporation. “What are you involved in?” she whispered. She put the card inside her handbag and drove home. But she couldn't shake the feeling that the stranger hadn't appeared on that road by accident. --- For the next three weeks, Maya tried to forget him. She succeeded. At least, she thought she did. Then, on a Monday morning, everything changed. Maya walked into her father's company expecting another ordinary day. She had barely sat down when Clara, her secretary, entered with a folder. “Good morning, Maya.” “Good morning.” Clara placed the folder on her desk. “Your father asked me to give you this.” Maya opened it. “A new manager?” “Yes. He's starting today.” She skimmed through the document. His qualifications were impressive. His business history was even more impressive. Then her eyes stopped. At the bottom of the page was a name. Alexander Smith. Maya's heart skipped. She read it again. No. It couldn't be him. Before she could say anything, someone knocked on her office door. Knock. Knock. Maya slowly lifted her head. “Come in.” The door opened. A man walked inside. Dark suit. Calm expression. Cold eyes. Maya couldn't breathe. It was him. The stranger from the road. Alexander Smith looked directly at her. And unlike three weeks ago, he didn't look broken. He looked completely in control. His eyes moved briefly toward the folder on her desk. Then he smiled. “Good morning, Maya.” She stared at him. “How do you know my name?” His smile disappeared. For the first time, something dangerous flickered across his face. “Because,” he said quietly, “your father and I have unfinished business.” And Maya suddenly realized that the man she had rescued that night might have entered her life for a reason.
