Tom was gone when Commander Tap arrived at the reserve.
Finding Anna at the water’s edge, she covered her shoulders with a blanket and cleaned the blood from around her mouth with an antiseptic wipe. Anna was shaking, so she injected her with a sedative. She snapped the lock on a soft blue bag and the bag instantly froze. The commander applied the cold pack to the bruises on Anna’s face. Then her driver put Anna in the car and tore off through the reserve, leaving her on the riverbank.
The commander took out her phone, plugged in a set of headphones and typed a message to the director as she followed Tom’s vehicle on the screen. He was four kilometres from Kings Cross.
