Chapter1; Mabel
MABEL
“Take her away!”
The stranger who had visited the house commanded and his men sprung to action, roughly grabbing me.
“Please sir, you can’t take her,”
My father pleaded going on his knees as I struggled between two of his men.
“Let me go!”
I couldn’t afford to be taken away by some stranger I just met because my father indebted to him, No. it didn’t sound well to me. How will my father survive? What will people think? That my father is irresponsible? I would never allow my father to face such.
The stranger’s cold gaze fell on our small unkempt room. The irritation in his face showed that the dense atmosphere was suffocating him and even though my father in his generosity offered him a seat, he couldn’t bring himself to sit on any of the chairs available.
I did my best to dust the chairs on their arrival and gather the clothes that were scattered around the room in a heap but it didn’t do the room any good.
He stood not far from the entrance, either because he was in a hurry or because the room was not up to is standard. He was so tall and handsome. His eyes were dark and looked deadly. Actually, everything about him smelt dangerous.
The aura that oozed from him spoke authority, majesty and danger. He was the kind of man you’d see in a movie and know for a certain that he is the antagonist.
He gazed at me as he eyes came in that direction as he scanned the room and everything in me knew that that kind of man was a man whose everyday life is characterized by trouble.
“She’s all I’ve got,”
My father cried crawling to where the man was standing and bowing at his feet.
I felt helpless seeing my father in such a condition but somehow he brought this upon himself. I had clearly warned him and kicked against him collecting such an amount of money since the company was facing a lot of difficulty. But as always my father believed he knew better and was doing the right thing.
Who in his right senses would see such a man whose aura alone talked danger and would borrow money from him?
“You should have thought about that before borrowing money from my company.”
He reminded my father. I was in tears also but instead of calmly pleading like my father, I opted for violence, kicking and twisting my body to break free from his men’s grip.
“One month,”
He threatened my father who was shaking like a leaf
“One month to provide all of my money… else you lose your daughter forever.”
He warned my father bitterly. My father grabbed his leg immediately, prostrating before him.
“I beg you sir, spare my daughter, take me instead,”
“Of what use are you to me? But you see, I have many use for her…”
His lips curl into a smirk, as his hands returned into his pockets. My father was still holding his legs when he looked at one of his men. He immediately marched to them and flung his hand mercilessly across my father’s cheek.
He gave a loud cry as his hands left stranger’s shoes, reaching for his csheek which had now turned red.
“Father!”
His cry agitated me, strength came immediately and I broke loose from his men’s grip and ran to my father. My hands touched his cheek warmly, caressing it slowly with tears running down my cheeks.
“Are you alright father?”
Father’s gaze held sorrow and pain. That was his short answer. He couldn’t have been okay, and even if they end up leaving without me, things would still not be okay for us. He placed his hands on mine and I bent my head crying. He should have listened to me. None of this would have happened then.
One of his men reached for me roughly, I tried to resist and he slapped me hard making me hit the floor, I gained my balance fast enough but I was panting hard. I was standing and my eyes held fury as I looked at the man who had hit me but I knew it was obvious by the way I was twitching my eyes and blinking repeatedly my cheek was stinging from the slap.
He didn’t waste time before grabbing my hair pulling me by it to the car. Father didn’t dare follow as the man who had slapped him was still towering over him. He could only wail and call out to me, I kept screaming hopelessly but followed in pain.
“Put her in the boot,”
My new master informed quickly as the man dragging me made for the door of the car
“That’s where slaves belong.”
He added before entering the car.
I was thrown into the boot like an animal and even though I knew I was leaving my father for a while… who am I kidding, maybe forever, I hoped that we could say proper goodbyes.
We didn’t get that luxury as my father remained fixed on the floor even when the man who slapped him ad walked away. I could only peer at my father through a small opening as the car started to move.
The realization that I might never see my father again hit me hard. My chest pained me and I held it with both hands as tears gushed out of my eyes. The discomfort of the boot didn’t disturb me as I kept weeping throughout the journey with my hands glued to my mouth to prevent me from making a sound, lest they realize how hurt I am and use it against me.
“Where should I keep the blondie, boss?”
One of his men asked when we got to the mansion. He paused for a minute indecisive. He turned to look at me again. I was still boiling with rage my hair was a big mess and my face was puffed up with fury. I had dried my tears and made sure it was not obvious that I carried.
“He seemed to be in deep thoughts. His serious countenance rubbed off on his men who stood by the cars, alert and focused even within the high walls of the gigantic mansion.
I didn’t know what his decision would be but if his indecisiveness can bring such a standstill that all the huge men around me waited in silence, then a wrong decision or a bad judgment from this man is hell herself.
