Cassie The towering iron gates of WestBrooke High stood open before me like the entrance to another world. I tightened my grip around the strap of my bag and stared upward at the massive campus beyond, momentarily forgetting how to breathe. This was it. WestBrooke High. The most prestigious academy in the country. A school reserved for the children of powerful families, wealthy elites, and those born into positions most people could only dream of. And somehow… I was standing here. I adjusted the hem of my uniform and exhaled slowly, trying to settle the nervous storm raging inside me. Mom had spent almost all of her savings buying me this bag and the rest of my school things. She had insisted I needed to look like I belonged here. Even though we both knew I didn’t. I pushed the thought away. I had earned this. Saving that girl had changed everything. One moment I had been just Cassandra Blake from the wrong side of town. The next… I had a scholarship to WestBrooke High. And Mom had been offered work in the pack kitchens. For the first time in years, it felt like life was finally giving us a chance. I wasn’t about to ruin it. Squaring my shoulders, I stepped deeper into the school grounds, glancing around as students walked past in expensive uniforms and polished shoes. Everyone here looked… perfect. I needed to find the administrative office so I could get my registration kit and be shown to my class. Simple. I followed the paved walkway, scanning the buildings ahead for anything that looked like the admin block. Suddenly, something hard slammed against my shoulder. “Ow!” I stumbled slightly before looking down. A small white ball rolled against my shoe. I bent over and picked it up, rubbing the spot where it had hit me. “What the…” I turned around, scanning the area. To my right stretched a massive sports field. But strangely…No one seemed to be approaching me. No apology. No explanation…Nothing. I frowned. That was weird. After waiting another few seconds, I sighed. Whoever threw it clearly wasn’t interested in claiming it. Fine. I turned around, deciding to continue searching for the administrative office. Out of nowhere, a body suddenly stepped directly in front of me. I stopped abruptly. My eyes slowly traveled upward…and upward and my jaw almost dropped. Wow. The guy standing in front of me was ridiculously handsome. He was tall, broad shoulders, He had Dark hair falling carelessly over his forehead. And his eyes… Goodness! His eyes. He had deep brown eyes that looked like someone had dipped them in warm honey. I blinked, then tried stepping around him, but he moved right and blocked me. I frowned and stepped left, but another guy suddenly appeared there. I turned the other way and a third boy blocked that side too. Seriously? Slowly, I looked back at the first guy. “Excuse me,” I said politely, pointing ahead. “I’m trying to get to the administrative office. It’s my first day and I really don’t want to be late.” I bit my lower lip absentmindedly. The handsome stranger stared at me for a moment. Then he scoffed. “You must be the nosy savior.” Behind him, the other two boys laughed. My brows pulled together. “Excuse me?” His eyes narrowed slightly. “Your nosiness earned you quite a bit, didn’t it?” he sneered. “After all… it brought you here.” The words hit harder than they should have. I mean, the way he said it…Like I had manipulated my way into being there. Like saving someone’s life had been some calculated move. I swallowed the irritation rising in my chest. No. I was not getting into trouble on my first day. So instead…I smiled politely. “Yes. I’m the new scholarship student.” I extended my hand toward him. “My name is Cassie.” His gaze dropped to my outstretched hand, then slowly lifted back to my face. His lips curved into a pure mocking smile. “You can save that for the dogs.” My hand froze midair. Well…Okay then. Message received. I quietly lowered my hand and forced myself to stay calm. This guy clearly wanted trouble. And I wasn’t giving him any. Without saying another word, I took two steps backward and turned around. If I couldn’t go forward…I’d simply go back the way I came. But apparently, he wasn't done. “Grab her bag.” I heard him say in a sharp tone. Before I could react, one of the boys yanked violently at my shoulder. I gasped as I heard a loud ripping sound. My bag tore apart instantly. Books crashed against the pavement. For one second…everything inside me froze and all I could see were flashes of red. My anger had exploded. Mom had spent weeks saving money for that bag. She had wanted me to fit in here. Wanted me to look like I belonged and this spoiled rich i***t had destroyed it within minutes. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed students gathering, they were watching and whispering, thus seemed like a normal occurrence to them. I clenched my fists. No. I refused to make a scene. I bent down quickly and started gathering my books, but footsteps stopped directly in front of me. I looked up. Honey eyes stared down at me with infuriating amusement. He stretched his hand out. “I believe you have something that belongs to me.” I stared at him in confusion, then I suddenly realized… It was the ball. I still had the stupid ball. I looked at him in disbelief. First, he hits me with it and hides instead of apologizing, then he destroys my bag just to get it back. Unbelievable. I slowly stood up, gripping the ball tightly. Fine. Two could play this game. I raised the ball slightly. “I believe,” I said coolly, “you owe me an apology if you want this back.” Gasps erupted from the crowd surrounding us immediately and whispers spread like wildfire. The guy’s expression darkened instantly. Interesting. Apparently nobody spoke to him like this. He stepped forward and so close that only inches separated us now. I could feel the heat radiating off his body as his eyes hardened into something dangerous. “You aren’t even worthy of the soil you stand on…” he said quietly. His voice was cold enough to freeze blood. “Yet you want an apology from me?” His lips tilted into a cruel smile. “You must be high on something.” I stared right back at him, refusing to let myself flinch. Maybe everyone else here was terrified of him. I wasn’t. Not because I wanted trouble, but because I was already angry enough not to care. I gave the ball a small toss in my hand. “And you must have been raised without manners.” I replied with a simple nod. “But if you really think I’m high on something, then it must be your pheromones, cos you drip of them.” The entire courtyard went dead silent, like no one there was even breathing. Even the two boys standing behind honey eyes looked stunned. For half a second, I wondered if I had just signed my own death certificate. Then, I heard a low chuckle escape from someone in the crowd. The honey-eyed jerk’s face darkened even further. His jaw tightened. “You have no idea who you’re talking to, do you?” I shrugged. “You’re right.” I tilted my head innocently. “Because unlike some people, I introduce myself before acting like a complete jerk.” A few students audibly sucked in sharp breaths. One girl near the front covered her mouth. The guy stared at me like he couldn’t quite believe what he was hearing, then suddenly, he let out a dangerous laugh. “You’ve got guts,” he said. His eyes flickered briefly to the ball still in my hand. “But guts won’t save you here.” I crossed my arms. “Neither will being rich if nobody teaches you basic decency.” Behind him, one of his friends muttered under his breath. “Damn…” The guy stepped even closer. So close that I could smell cedar and mint clinging to his uniform. His voice dropped lower. “Listen carefully, scholarship girl.” There it was again. That word. He made it sound like being poor somehow made me less human. “You’re standing in territory you don’t understand.” His gaze sharpened. “This school belongs to people like us…it belongs to me!” I narrowed my eyes. “No.” I tightened my grip around the ball. “This school belongs to students who earned the right to be here.” Something flashed across his face. For the first time, It seemed I had actually gotten under his skin. “Enough!” A loud female voice suddenly yelled from behind us. The voice cut through the tension, making everyone turn. A tall woman in a fitted black suit strode toward us, heels clicking sharply against the pavement. Her silver-rimmed glasses sat perfectly on her face, and authority practically radiated off her. The crowd immediately began dispersing. The two boys behind honey-eyes straightened instantly. Even he stepped back. Interesting. The woman stopped beside me and surveyed the torn bag, the scattered books, and the obvious tension hanging in the air. Her expression hardened. “What exactly is happening here?” Nobody answered. She turned toward the guy in front of me. Her eyes narrowed. “Mr. Morgan?” So, that was his name. Morgan. Of course it had to be something annoyingly dramatic. The woman folded her arms. “Would you care to explain why our new student is standing here with destroyed property before classes have even begun?” Morgan… honey eyes… or whatever his name was stared at her for a long moment. Then casually shoved his hands into his pockets. “She was in the way.” I blinked. Seriously? The woman’s face darkened. “Principal Hawthorne specifically instructed every student to make Miss Blake feel welcome.” His eyes flickered toward me, like hearing my name had connected some pieces in his head. The woman turned toward me, her expression softening immediately. “You must be Cassandra Blake.” I nodded slowly. “Yes, ma’am.” She smiled politely. “I’m Vice Principal Eleanor Newton.” Her gaze dropped to my torn bag and she sighed. “I see your welcome has already been… eventful.” Behind us, Morgan let out a quiet scoff. Vice Principal Newton shot him a warning look, sharp enough to cut steel. “Mr. Morgan.” His expression remained unreadable. “Yes?” “You will report to detention after the final period.” The entire courtyard froze again. One of his friends nearly choked. Detention? Apparently that was a big deal. Morgan’s eyes narrowed dangerously. “You’re punishing me?” Vice Principal Newton didn’t blink as she replied, “You destroyed school property and harassed a student.” She adjusted her glasses. “Be grateful I’m stopping there.” For a second, I thought he might argue. Instead…His gaze slowly shifted back to me and the look he gave me sent a chill crawling down my spine. I knew this wasn’t over when he looked at me and smirked. “Well then…” His honey eyes locked onto mine. “Welcome to WestBrooke High, Cassie.” Something about the way he said my name made my stomach twist. He turned and walked away, his two friends quickly following behind him. The crowd scattered seconds later like nothing had happened. Vice Principal Newton bent down and helped gather the rest of my books. I knelt beside her silently, my heart was still pounding. She handed me the final notebook, then she looked at me carefully. “You handled that better than most.” I gave a weak laugh. “I’m not sure that’s a good thing.” She stood and motioned for me to follow. “Come.” I rose slowly. She glanced toward the direction Morgan had disappeared, then said quietly, “You should be careful around him.” I frowned. “Why?” Her expression turned unreadable. “Because that…” She paused. “…was Alpha heir Andrew Morgan. ” My footsteps stopped. Alpha heir? I stared at her. And suddenly every whisper, every gasp, every terrified reaction from the crowd…made perfect sense. Vice Principal Newton looked ahead grimly. “And you just made an enemy out of the most powerful student in this entire academy.”
