Small town life
As I woke up this morning and looked outside, a smile appeared on my face. After a few rainy days finally the sun was shining bright upon my window. Finally I could go for a run through the woods near my house in the morning, something I like to do every day, at least, if I have some time left. Since I work at the only local bar in town, I usually don't have to work in the mornings. I dressed myself and put on my running shoes. As I started running it felt like my feet already knew where I wanted to go. I never lived anywhere else so I guess I could take this path with my eyes closed and still get home safely. After running for fourty minutes I was back at my house. While catching my breath I looked at the house with a sence of nostalgia. My parents died in this home when I was only fourteen years old. I had no living relatives so I had to do it all alone. The people in town always were very kind to me and they helped me get by. They granted me the house as they pitied me for losing my parents and having no where to go. Sometimes my neighbour Josie came by to bring me some leftovers or she would invite me to join them for dinner. She was always very kind to me and I happily repay her by making sure her teenage son gets home safely from the bar as I made sure nobody dared to mess with the kid. After a shower I made myself comfortable on the couch with some tea and a book. I always dreamed of going to some huge university and study psychology or history or something like that. I loved to read and fill my head with knowledge. The only thing standing in my way was the one thing everybody seemed to be missing in this town: money. My parents did not leave me a lot of money and even though I started working when I was sixteen, I had to use most of my earnings to put food on the table. I'm not complaining though, it's not as if I can never buy new clothes or something, but an education just wasn't in the cards for me. I did not like to leave this town since it is the only life I know as well as I doubt I would be smart enough to make it.
It was evening and time to start my shift at the local bar. I put on myT-shirt with the logo of the bar on it so I would be recognizable for the costumers. Not that anybody did not know me in this town, but well, my boss wanted to make sure. The shirt was a bit to revealing for my taste but I guess it was fine. I just worked for an hour when Mary came in. She is my best friend ever since kindergarden and she is the coolest person I know. Her blond hair and bright brown eyes makes every guy in town crazy and made me quite invisible for most of the time. "Hi Mary, haven't seen you in a while, what have you been up to?". She smiles at me as I start making her favorite cocktail. "Gosh liz, you really never go out do you?". I was looking at her a bit funny, since I really did not understand what she revering to. "What did I miss?". She started leaning over the bar to make sure I could hear her properly as she wispered; "You know, that huge old house at the other side of the woods right? Well, the owners finally came back a few days ago. They have been renovation the house every since. I guess they have to do a lot to make it look nice again. People say nobody lived there in fiftheen years or something.". I must admit, living in a small town, this kind of stuff is enough to gossip about for at least a week, but there was more to this story then she was telling me. "Mary, I have known you for 23 years now.. What are you so excited about?". As she sipped her cocktail she started to tell more about the family. The house will be the home of three brothers and their father. A maid came with them as well, so they must have some money to spent. Another girl in town already saw two of the brothers wallk in town and if I may believe Mary they are very handsome. She did not know the details yet, but she was determined to figure out more about them. Even though I could listen to Mary all night, her new boyfriend entered the bar so they went to a table and started to enjoy their night together. My mind is wondering off while I'm serving the other costumers. After a while a bewildert older guy came to the bar and started to talk to me. "So, I'm having a rough night, toods, bring me some scotch.". While I'm pooring him his drink I can already smell the alcohol on him. This can't be the first one he's having tonight. As I place the glass on the counter he grabs it imediately as he drinks it all in one throw, never loosing his eyecontact with me. "Another one, girl!". I was doubtfull about serving him tonight, he could get pretty nasty and I don't like the way he's looking at me. "Maybe you should just go home, this drink was on the house.". I can hear the doubt in my own voice while saying that. He seems to notice it as he points his finger at me and starts to raise his voice at me, "Sluts.. You are all the same, spread your legs as long as there is money, and when the poor fellow is out of his gold, you kick him out! Who do you think you are, telling me what to do huh?". I can feel the anger grow inside of me, my hands clensing into a fist. "Get the F**k out of my bar, now!". My raised voice does not seem to make a difference for him. I can see him looking at my breasts as he bites his lowerlip. "You should learn to..". The man could not finish his sentence as a strange tall guy walked up to the man and put his hand on his shoulder. His eyes spit fire and it seems like he understood exactly wat was going on. "You heard her. Leave.". He says with a straight face, composed. The man looks intimidated as he starts to walk to the door of the bar untill he is out of sight. Suddenly I can feel how fast my heart was beating and I took a large breath in and out. I looked at the stranger, as my anger was making room for curiousity. He is probably one of the new brothers in town as he certainly is a handsome tall man. His hair looks deep brown and is styled perfectly and messy at the same time. Deep blue eyes are starring at me, a grecian nose and a strong jawline with a slight stubble. And his lips.. sensual. He clears his throat as a subtle way of showing me that he is waiting for me to answer. "So, are you okay?". He repeats himself. My cheeks start to turn red as I feel caught. "Yeah, sure. This is not the first time a drunk i***t thinks he owns the place. Thank you for helping me.". He gives me a small grim as he continues. "Well, I wanted to check out the local bar and order some wiskey, but he was in the way..". He chuckles at his own joke as I started to poor some wiskey in a glass. "On the house". He grabs the drink straight out of my hand as he looks deeply in my eyes. "Did they just change colour? Your eyes?". It was a long time ago someone noticed that on me as I start explaining; "Oh yes, Sorry, I'm not used to people noticing. It is a family thing. My grandmother had it as well. It seems that my eyes can change colour slighty when I'm happy, sad, angry or scared. It's stupid.. I know". He keeps staring at me as he goes on "They are green now, what does that mean?". He looks at me a bit puzzled as if he is trying to find out how I feel. "You'll find out in time, if you get to know me". As I hear myself say that line I feel really cheap. What was I thinking, as if he wants to get the know the orphan of the town with no future ahead of her. I look up and see him laugh. "I think my father knew your grandmother. I heared him tell a story about changing eyecolours once. You should come by the house sometime to meet him". He takes a last sip of his wiskey as he turns around and walks away. Did he just.. ask me to come over?
