Chapter 2

ORIANE “Are you kidding me?” I spat out as soon as Brianna finished her narration, we had returned to the room, as she claimed it wasn’t a discussion for other ears. “Did you hit your head somewhere?” I held her head and examined it. “I didn’t,” she muttered and shook her head from my hand. “Then why are you spewing rubbish?” I yelled, and the hunger I was feeling suddenly disappeared. “You’ve known me since our freshman year. Have you seen me with fangs, claws, or glowing eyes?” She shook her head slowly. “Then why are you saying I am a wolf, Rianna, I’m a normal girl just like you.” “Except I’m not normal,” she yelled back, tears brewing in her eyes. “What?” My eyes widened on their own accord. “Wh… what are you talking about, Riana?” I stuttered. “I’m not normal,” she sobbed, tears flowing down her cheeks freely, “and neither are you,” she added slowly. “Oh my God,” I slapped my forehead with my hand. “Babe, you’re scaring me. Stop saying nonsense. I know you and…” She shut her eyes tightly, and when she opened them, they were glowing, just like the ones… in my dreams. I staggered back, my jaw dropped, my heart beat accelerated, my palm became sweaty… “No, no,” I muttered, shaking my head vigorously. “There must be a reasonable explanation for this,” I spoke softly, more to myself than to her. “There is,” she stood up, and came closer, but I shifted backwards, “Don’t come any closer,” I yelled. “You’re Oriane Ashwood, daughter of Alpha Ashwood, and last surviving member of the Darkwater pack and…” she went on regardless, almost like she was in a hurry to make her point. “You’re delusional,” I placed my hands over my ears. “Hold on, “ I raised my hand, “did you just say Ashwood, as in Ashwood University?” She nodded slowly, and I chuckled dryly. “I’m convinced you’re crazy now,” “Crazy? Does this look crazy to you?” she snarled, showing her fangs. I fell to my butt as I staggered back. “Oh my gosh, it’s either you’re playing some kind of prank on me, or I’m seeing things,” tears slipped down my cheeks. “This is real, Ri,” she spoke softly, placing her hand gently on my shoulders. I shrank at her touch; it felt so foreign and cold. “The person we met out there is my brother, Alpha Vale,” she paused and took in my appearance, scratching the back of her head. “He’s your betrothed,” she went on, “You were given to him as a child.” “Oh wow, keep it coming,” I smirked and threw my hands in the air. Then it hit me, if she was right, then she had known who I was, and kept it a secret? She watched as I struggled to regain my memories, and didn’t say a word. “So I’m a wolf, my whole family is dead, I was betrothed as a kid to your brother, and you? What’s your part to play in all this? I mean, you clearly knew this much about and still said nothing.” I glared at her, arms folded across my chest, my shock replaced with rage and fury. “We’ve been watching over you, Ri…” “It’s Oriane,” I snapped, “ You lost that privilege.” “I was sent here to protect you until the time came,” she spoke in a soft and almost inaudible tone. “Time for??’ I stared at her in disbelief. “The time when he’ll come to claim his mate,” “By him, you mean Vale?” She nodded gently. I shook my head, grabbed my coat, “Even if all this is true, you’ve got the wrong person Brianna,” I spoke weakly, and walked out of the room, but deep down, I had a feeling she was right. “And where are you going to?” she asked, her tone laced with worry and concern. “I need a minute,” I dismissed her with a wave. This was the only logical explanation for my nightmares and the occurring flashes, but I still couldn’t bring myself to accept it. Accepting it was accepting to have my reality altered entirely, and I wasn’t ready for that. My chest felt like a thousand needles were puncturing it at a time. My head felt too heavy for my neck, my vision was blurry due to the tears pooling in my eyes. My mind went back to Brianna, to all the times we spent together, and she said nothing. Not even a clue. I bet she had a good laugh when I told her about my nightmares. I wiped the tears with the back of my palm and sniffed. I kept on walking, it was dark outside, but I didn’t mind. No direction in mind. I just knew I needed to get as far away from here as I could. I kept on walking till I got to the woods, where we held so many parties, and even here I held so many memories of me and Brianna. I was welcomed by moans. I chuckled sadly. I just wanted to be alone, but even that couldn’t happen. I sniffed and looked up to the sky. I held a tree as a sharp pain hit my head. I shut my eyes tightly, holding my head as the pain increased; it felt like my head was about to be split in two. “What’s going on?” I muttered. Then the flashes came. I couldn’t make anything of them at first, but then they became clearer, like I was in another world. I saw her, a little girl, trying to escape from the ruins around her. I could smell the stench of burning wood and flesh. I swallowed hard as bile rose to my throat. I didn’t need anyone to tell me; I knew instantly that the little girl was me. I watched as the life I had burned to ashes. My pack members, my family, all gone, their screams of agony reached my ears. It was going to haunt me my whole life. I fell to my knees, clutching my chest, as I cried out into the dark. It hurt so much, like I could feel the pain of everyone who died that night. I wailed loudly, not caring about the people with me. They could never understand. “It’ll be fine, Oriane,” a soft voice said. I looked around me, but there was no one in sight. What’s going on? “Hello!!!” I yelled, amidst sobs, “Any… Anyone out there?” I choked. “I’m here,” the voice responded, in the same soft tone that somehow managed to soothe my nerves. It was then I realised, it came from my head. “Wh… who are you?” I stuttered, fear creeping in.
