Claws Behind The Calm

Roman's pov Even among the noise of the bonfire the laughter and the music, her presence cut through it all. A constant pull beneath my skin. A quiet, relentless reminder. Mine. I stood at the edge of the clearing, just beyond the reach of the firelight, where shadows clung and the night swallowed everything whole. From here, I could see everything. Everyone. Including her. Aurora sat near the flames, the golden light dancing across her face, softening her features, making her look... Fragile in a way that made something dark inside me stir. But it wasn't her fragility that held my attention. It was her laughter. My jaw tightened. She was smiling. No more than that. She was relaxed and open. Her body leaned slightly toward the male beside her, her expression unguarded in a way I had not seen since the moment I found her in the forest. Darius. I recognized him instantly. The young warrior who had complimented her beauty, the day I announced her as my mate to the pack. And currently he was sitting far too close to what belonged to me. My gaze darkened. I watched as he said something, something I couldn't hear over the crackle of the fire and Aurora laughed again. The sound carried through the night, light and effortless. Something in my chest twisted. She never did that with me. The thought came uninvited and Unwanted. But it lingered because it was true. When she looked at me, there was no laughter. No ease but only fear, hesitation and distance but yet here she was speaking freely and Smiling as if she had already forgotten what I was. What I am to her. A slow breath left me, controlled, measured but it did nothing to quiet the low, restless growl building beneath my ribs. "You're going to burn a hole through them if you keep staring like that." The voice came from my side. "Leave," I said flatly. My Beta ignored the command, stepping fully into place beside me. I could hear the faint clink of glass before he held something out toward me. "Drink," he said casually. "Before you decide to rip one of your warriors apart for having a conversation with your mate." My gaze remained fixed on the fire. On her. On them. But after a moment, I took the glass. The liquid burned as it slid down my throat, sharp and grounding but not enough. Never enough. "She's adapting faster than I expected," my Beta continued, his tone thoughtful as he followed my line of sight. "That's a good thing." I said nothing because all I could see... Was her laughing with someone else. "She doesn't do that with me." The words left before I could stop them. Quiet and dangerous. My Beta went still beside me. "Of course she doesn't," he replied after a pause. "You're the Lycan King you're not exactly approachable." My grip on the glass tightened slightly. "She fears me," I said. It wasn't a question but a fact. I saw it in her eyes every time she looked at me the way her body tensed, the way her breath hitched, the way she held herself back like I might Break her and yet she sat there now, leaning toward Darius, her guard completely lowered. The beast within me stirred, restless and displeased. Why him? Why does she give him what she withholds from me? My jaw clenched as I watched Darius shifted slightly closer, his attention fully on her. Too focused. Too comfortable. A low, nearly silent growl rumbled in my chest. "She's mine." The words were barely more than a breath, but they carried weight. Claim. Truth. My Beta exhaled slowly. "Everyone's aware of that." My gaze darkened further, locking onto Darius. One command that's all it would take. One word and he would move. He would bow his head, step away, never dare look at her again. And she would remember. They all would but I didn't move, speak or command. Because something deeper held me back. Not weakness. Control. I took another slow sip from the glass, forcing the fire in my chest to settle into something colder. Sharper. More dangerous. If I forced her... If I took what the bond demanded without her giving it willingly... I would have her but I would never have this. That laughter and that ease. That part of her she gave so freely to another. ______________________________________________________ Aurora's pov "-and then he fell straight into the water," Darius finished, barely holding back his laughter. I stared at him for a second before the image fully formed in my mind and then I burst out laughing. He was telling me what happened to him and his older cousin, Blake. When he went to the yellow stone pack and his cousin took him hunting. "You're lying," I said between breaths. "I swear I'm not," he grinned. "You should've seen his face." I shook my head, still smiling, the sound of my laughter mixing with the crackling fire and distant voices around us. It felt... easy talking to him. For a moment, I forgot about the palace. About the bond. About the weight of everything pressing down on me. I opened my mouth to respond but suddenly, something sharp brushed against my eye. "Ah-" I flinched, immediately bringing my hand up. "Wait-" "What?" Darius's tone shifted instantly, concern replacing amusement. "There's something in my eye," I muttered, blinking rapidly as irritation spread. "It-ugh-it hurts." "Hey, don't rub it," he said quickly. Too late. I winced, trying to blink it away, but it only made it worse. "Stop," Darius said again, softer this time. Before I could react, he shifted closer, closing the gap between us. My breath caught slightly as he reached out, his fingers gently caught my wrist to still my hand. "Let me see." I hesitated for half a second... then lowered my hand. "Okay..." "Lift your chin a little," he murmured. I did as he said, my heart beating just a little faster not from fear, just... awareness. He leaned in slightly, his focus entirely on me now, his expression serious as he examined my eye. "Stay still," he said quietly. I tried but the closeness made me hyper-aware of everything the warmth of the fire, the sound of my own breathing, the way his hand lightly steadied my chin. "Yeah," he said after a moment. "Just some dust got in." "Feels like more than dust," I mumbled. He huffed a quiet laugh. "You'll be okay." Then, without warning, he leaned in just a little closer and gently blew against my eye. I blinked in surprise, the cool air instantly easing the irritation. "Oh-" I blinked again a few times. "Wait... that actually helped." "Told you," he said, a small smirk tugging at his lips as he pulled back slightly. The discomfort faded almost immediately. I let out a relieved breath, a smile forming. "Thank you." "You're welcome..." His smirk deepened just slightly. "...my queen." I groaned softly, shaking my head. "Please don't start with that again." "No promises," he said, amusement dancing in his eyes. I rolled my eyes, but I was smiling. It felt normal talking to Darius, I felt as if I were talking to one of my friends from Eldermist. A sudden, strange awareness creeped in. Without thinking, I lifted my gaze letting it drift across the clearing, past the fire, past the laughing faces and moving figures. And then I saw him. Roman. My breath caught. He stood across me, standing between Kael and Rynn. His gaze was locked on me and Darius. And the look in his eyes made my stomach drop. He looked furious. His expression was unreadable to anyone else, but I felt it. The tension in the air. The way his presence seemed to press down on everything around him. The warmth from the fire suddenly felt too hot. My smile faded instantly. "What is it?" Darius asked beside me, noticing the shift. I didn't answer instead I just stared at Roman.
