Aurora's pov
The courtyard was quiet now, eerily still. Some of the vampires had fled whilst some remained on the ground unmoving. The air smelled of iron, smoke, and something darker I couldn't name. My hands shook, gripping the edges of my coat as if it would protect me from the memory of their faces, their fangs, the way they had lunged at me without a second thought.
I had no idea these creatures existed but I did hear stories of them from the hunters in our village. They said they were impulsive, violent and unstable. They survived on human blood.
I stumbled slightly but felt Roman's hands slide around my waist, steadying me. I stared up at him, and for the first time, I saw him not just as the terrifying Lycan king I had feared, but as my protector, my anchor.
I buried my face in his chest and began sobbing.
"It's okay," he murmured, rubbing my back in a soothing manner. "It's all over."
I slowly pulled away and stared up at him. "It's not," I whispered.
"They're going to come back aren't they?"
He exhaled, wiping away my tears. "Yes, they will but I assure you I would never let them hurt you or take you away from me, I will protect you with my life and so will the pack."
"I believe you," I said softly.
Because I knew deep down he would, he'd protect and keep me safe no matter what.
His lips brushed against my forehead.
"I... I thought..." I began, voice trembling, "...I thought they would... they would-"
"They won't," he interrupted softly. "Not while I'm here. Not while I exist."
"I... I was so scared," I admitted, voice breaking.
I was scared, I was scared that they were going to drink my blood or worse kill me.
"I know," he murmured. "And I'm sorry you had to see that."
My chest heaved as I swallowed, trying to steady my racing heartbeat. The world still smelled of danger, still throbbed with tension, but for the first time, I felt a flicker of something else, safety. Fragile, tentative, but real.
"I... I don't understand all of this," I whispered, gesturing vaguely to the courtyard, the corpses, the palace itself. "I don't understand the pack, or you... or me..."
"You don't have to understand yet," he said, pushing a strand of hair behind my ear. "You only have to know that you are safe. And that you are mine."
The words made my stomach twist in ways I hadn't known possible. My hands trembled again and it wasn't from fear, but from the pull of the bond, the closeness, the undeniable truth in what he said.
I leaned back slightly, looking up at him, and gave him a small, shaky smile. "I... I think... I think I understand a little," I admitted.
Roman's golden eyes softened, almost imperceptibly, but fierce as ever. "Good," he murmured. "Because this is only the beginning. And from here... nothing will ever be simple."
I swallowed, nodding, letting the trembling of my body fade slowly, feeling the bond settle, faintly vibrating between us. Safe, for now.
And for the first time, I let myself believe that maybe... I could survive here.

Roman's pov
The last of the vampire rebels lay defeated, their blood soaking the courtyard stones. I stood aside with Aurora in my arms and watched as the warriors and a few other pack members began to disperse the bodies of the vampires.
She was right they will return again and I will have to be prepared.
Kiera approached, smiling warmly at Aurora.
"You were brave today Aurora, you did well," she said, placing her hand gently on Aurora's shoulder.
Aurora looked up at me, her eyes wide, still shimmering with tears, and I felt a surge of something fierce and possessive. My beast roared inside me, hungry, protective, alive with the power that only the bond could ignite.
My arm around her waist tightened slightly.
"See them?" I murmured, voice low but carrying authority. "They are yours now, too. They will protect you. As I do."
Her lips trembled, and a faint smile tugged at the corners of her mouth. "They... they respect you," she whispered. "Respect you... and me?"
"Yes, I'm their alpha, their leader," I said, voice steady, unwavering. "And because what belongs to the Alpha is sacred. And that includes you."
Aurora leaned her head against my chest, hesitant but seeking reassurance. The bond pulsed, stronger this time, weaving between us like fire. Protective, intimate, undeniable.
"I think you've seen enough for today," I said, my arms tightening around her as I lifted her from the ground, her weight pressing against my chest.
She gasped, wrapping her arms around my neck.
"Roman what are you doing?"
"You need to rest, you've been through a lot today," I said.
"I can walk you know," she murmured, rolling her eyes.
"I know that," I replied, smiling.
She exhaled, resting against my chest, her head tilted toward my shoulder, strands of hair brushed softly across my collar.
The palace doors swung open, heavy with gilded carvings. I stepped inside, with Aurora still in my arms I could feel her gaze on me.
I looked down at her smirking. "Enjoying the view?"
"You're easy on the eyes."
I blinked, a little shocked at what I heard.
"Are you saying I'm attractive?"
She shrugged, a beautiful grin appeared on her face. "I just did," she admitted.
I leaned down and placed a kiss on her temple. Her breath hitched as she gazed into my eyes.
"And you're beautiful," I whispered, my gaze unwavering.

My boots echoed against the marble floor. The vast hall rose around us pillars soared upward, banners draped in deep crimson and gold, chandeliers scattering light like stars across the polished stone.
I pushed open the carved doors of my chambers, the air inside was hushed, warm, and intimate compared to the grandeur of the hall. Still holding her close, I crossed the room with deliberate care, as though each step was a vow.
At the bedside, I lowered myself, gently easing her down onto the silken sheets. Her hair fanned out across the pillow, catching the glow of the sunlight, and for a moment I simply gazed at her my expression softened. My hand lingered at her cheek, brushing away a stray lock.
"Get some sleep," I murmured, pressing a kiss to her forehead.
