Chapter One: The Birthday Surprise
Clover lay on her bed, half asleep, basking in the warmth of the early morning sunlight that streamed into her room. Her hands consciously roamed the bed, expecting to feel Marcus lying beside her, but to her surprise, he was not there.
Her eyes fluttered open as she flipped to the other side of the bed. She sat up on the bed and c****d her head to the side, her face portraying worry. Her eyes darted around the room and landed on the flower bouquet on the side drawer of the bed.
Her brows creased in curiosity, she slid out of the bed and reached for the flower bouquet. As soon as she lifted the flowers, her nostrils were filled with the sweet fragrance that oozed out of the flowers, and her face momentarily lit up with a sweet smile.
It was a lavender flower, her favorite, and only Marcus could have known how best to start her day. Her attention was suddenly drawn to a piece of note that was tucked into the flower. She carefully took out the note from the flowers and unfolded it. Her smile widened to her ears as she read through the note:
“Happy birthday to the angel of my life. You bring so much happiness to my life, and I will forever be grateful for the extraordinary love we have shared through the years. On this special day, I want to remind you of how much I adore you. I love you more than words can express. With lots of love from your darling husband, Marcus. See you later in the evening.”
As soon as she finished reading the note, a flutter stirred in her chest, and her heart pounded erratically from the excitement she was feeling. Marcus always had a way of making her feel special on her birthday, and that day was not an exception. He even planned a birthday dinner later in the evening and had sent invites to a few family and friends to grace the occasion.
Clover could not contain her excitement as her day had started on a good note. She had already set aside the dress she was going to be wearing, and her hair and nails were already done. She stepped into her luxury bathroom to take a warm shower and came out shortly after to see a message notification beaming on her phone.
“That must be Marcus,” she exclaimed with a delighted smile as she rushed to get her phone from the bed. Her smile suddenly wiped off and was replaced with a confusing look when she realized that the message was not from Marcus but from her mother-in-law, Louisa. Her heart skipped a bit, and a knot of anxiety formed in her stomach.
Her brows creased, wondering what the content of the message was. Her mind immediately told her that it was bad news because she was not in Louisa's good books. She pinched the bridge of her nose, forcing herself to take a deep breath.
She tapped on the message and shut her eyes immediately, bracing herself for the worst. She gradually opened her eyes and glanced through the screen. Her eyes widened in disbelief upon seeing the content of the message.
“Happy birthday to my beloved daughter-in-law. I know we have not been the best of friends, but I'm willing to make it up to you. I have a birthday package for you, and I want you to pick it up at the address attached to this message.”
Clover sank deeper into confusion after reading the message. Louisa had never loved her as a daughter-in-law. She had never approved of her marriage with Marcus because she was a poor orphan who struggled to make ends meet. Sometimes she felt like giving up on the marriage because of Louisa's incessant troubles, but Carlos's unending love and support kept her going.
She had met Lucas four years ago when he was involved in a ghastly car accident and was badly injured. She was just coming back from work that fateful day when she met Lucas lying almost lifeless on the ground. Out of compassion, she rushed to help him and took him to the hospital. She stayed and took care of him at the hospital till he fully recovered and was discharged from the hospital.
Marcus was amazed by her selfless act and decided to employ her in his fashion company after he had discovered that she had some exceptional skill in creating designs for his clothing line. They had a good working relationship, which later metamorphosed into love until they eventually got married.
They lived happily married for two years until Louisa, her mother-in-law, came back into the country and tried to tear them apart because of her hatred for Clover.
However, Louisa's attitude towards her did not affect her relationship with Marcus, as Marcus always rebuked his mother and even stopped her from visiting them to avoid any altercation with Clover.
Clover dabbed her body with her fluffy white towel before changing into a yellow sleeveless gown and a jean jacket. She wore light makeup and hung her bag loosely on her shoulder as she stepped out of the house.
She got into her car and drove straight to the address Louisa had sent to her. She turned off the ignition and stepped out of the car. Her gaze landed on the building before her. It was a low-class hotel with shabby-looking exteriors.
Her gaze flickered with hesitation. “Why would Louisa want me to meet her in this cheap hotel? She is a woman of class and sophistication. Something doesn't seem right; I will just call her and confirm,” she said to herself as the feeling of doubt and uneasiness crept into her.
She brought out her phone and dialed Louisa's number; her heart stuttered in her chest as she waited for Louisa to pick up.
“Hello, Loussia, I just got to the location that you had sent to me. How do I get the package?” Clover said, trying to keep her voice polite.
“Good! Just come to room 306; I'm waiting for you,” Louisa's soft and friendly voice echoed from the other end.
“Alright, ma'am,” Clover hung up the call but couldn't shake off the unsettling feeling that lingered within her. Even though she had confirmation from Louisa, she still had the hunch that something was wrong.
She felt like going back home, but she didn't want to hurt Louisa's feelings since this was the first time she was ever going to give her a birthday present. Clover felt like she was standing at the edge of a cliff and Louisa was the one pushing her off.
Her hands clutched her bag tightly as she took a deep breath to steady her nerves. She shoved off the negative feeling and walked into the hotel. She got into the reception, and the receptionist directed her to room 306.
Her trepidation increased with every step she took towards the room. Her heartbeat raced faster, and her palms became sweaty as she stood before the door. Her hands trembled as she reached for the doorbell and pressed it down with her thumb.
The door swung open, and before she could register anything, her nose was covered with a handkerchief, and everything went blank.
