8. Hey, partner

CHAPTER EIGHT As Leon and I made our way to our lunch table where Peggy and Andrew were already sitting gossiping about something, I could not help moaning over my embarrassing moment in class. Who even acts like that?   “I mean, I could have done something other than gape at him like those typical nerds in movies when they run into a cute guy,” I placed my tray on the table, accompanying my statement with a frustrated sigh.   “What is she complaining about? And where the hell are your glasses?” Peggy fired one question after another as she took a sip of her bottled water.   “Well, she ran smack into Ian during our French class and her glasses broke. Now she won’t stop complaining over how she had gaped at Ian like a fish out of water right before the entire class,” Leon explained, his tone filled with amusement as he sat down at his spot.   “I was not gaping at him like a fish out of water. God! That guy is cute. Too bad he is not my type and not that he’d even notice me. Enough about Ian, anything interesting happen?” I questioned, biting into my apple. I could use some much-needed distraction.   “Well, you are forgetting the part where Lucian switched classes and now he is taking French, with you as his seatmate,” Oh, I had almost forgotten about that part. The chills I had felt the entire class had distracted me and I could not get anything Miss. Vasquez taught. Lucian had neither talked to me nor even glanced at me throughout class but that grim expression on his face had not helped my case much.   “Wait, what?” Andrew questioned, looking up from his food for the first time since we joined the table. I would not have thought much about it, if the suddenly guarded tone in his voice coupled with a tensed look, didn’t capture my attention.   “Guys, its no big deal. Besides, Lucian doesn’t even like me and so there is no chance in hell, he’d even talk to me,” I shrugged it off but I noticed the three friends share a look. They were hiding something from me and I had a feeling that I was going to find out soon enough.   “Yeah, you are right,” Peggy half-smiled.   “Oh-oh,” Andrew muttered, his eyes a bit widened as he gazed at someone behind me.   “What?” I questioned, frowning lightly as I half turned, my gaze falling on Alec approaching the table with the same hardened gaze I was getting used to.   He stopped short of our table, his eyes solely trained on me. Now, that stare did give me some bit of chills. I had to admit that it was a shame that he was wasting all those good looks with a frown.    “Follow me now Bishop,” It was more of a command than a request.   “I’m not sure if you have noticed but I‘m having lunch and I‘d hate to throw away all this food,” I countered. It was pretty frustrating when he was constantly showing how much he hated me right from my first day of school here then suddenly he was here, during lunch hour, while I was enjoying my food with my friends and he is commanding me to follow him. Who even does that?   He shut his eyes briefly, his jaw ticking and when he finally opened them, he was not less angry that he had been before.   “You heard her Alec,” Peggy joined in, her tone curt.   “You have a minute to follow me. I don’t have much time to waste doing some damn assignment with you. So now, Bishop,” he seethed through gritted teeth.   “Wait, I thought you requested for a partner change?” I raised an eyebrow in question. Last I remembered, he was waiting for Mr. Dawson to change partners.   “Well, we don’t always get what we want, do we? Now, don’t keep me waiting because honestly, it’s enough that I have to stand you for the next thirty minutes,” he said.   “Is there a problem here?” When did Ian get here? I had not seen him approaching the table until he spoke.   “No problem at all,” Alec answered, facing Ian.   Ian regarded Alec for a split of a second, then turned towards me,” Well, here are your glasses. You want to join me later so I can get you new ones? Though I do still think you look pretty without them,”   “Um…thanks,” I could feel some bit of color rising on my cheeks.   “If you are done trying to get into her panties, can she come with me now?  I have more pressing concerns,” Of course Alec was still here.   “Dude, you need to ease up a little,” Ian patted Alec on the shoulder, an easy smile on his face. He did not seem at all offended by Alec’s claim.   Choosing to let it slide, I stood up from my seat,” Well, sorry guys. Looks like there is no lunch for me. Um…and Ian, you don’t have to worry about the glasses.  I don’t really need them,” I said.   “Well, then I’ll see you around,” Ian shrugged, walking away.   “Wait, you can’t possibly go with Alec,” Peggy was the first one to break the silence just when I was about to walk away.   “Why not? Is there a problem?” I frowned. Peggy’s tone had taken me by surprise.   “Yes Turner. Is there a specific reason why I should not be working our assigned quiz together with Faith? I mean, we do plan on killing it,” There was challenge written all over Alec’s voice as he regarded Peggy with the same challenging look in his eyes.   “Just keep your phone with you,” she said instead after a few seconds of hesitation.   I nodded before following him but midway out of the room, we were stopped by Amber. She gave me the typical once over look, then turned to Alec.   “Hey Alec,” she cooed sweetly, a smile touching her lips.   “What do you want Amber?” He questioned, clearly not loving this interruption. Well, that made the two of us. Girls like Amber always had this thing where they think just because they are most popular girls in school, everyone automatically has to respect them and that was annoying as hell.   “Well, Lucian is not picking my calls and I can’t see him around either. Tell him to meet me at the Janitor’s closet during physics,” she smiled slyly going to the extent of winking.   “Janitors closet? Typical,” I murmured under my breath but apparently she heard.   “What did you say new girl?”   “Nothing,” the last thing I needed was to get into trouble with the school’s queen B. I needed my life to be as smooth and quiet as possible.   “That’s what I thought,” she flicked her hair, walking to Ian’s table. Of course, the popular students always hung out together. So typical. For a second, my gaze met Ian’s stare as I let myself get drawn to the intensity his stare held.   “Are you coming or what?” I snapped my attention to the impatient boy already several paces away from me.              Shrugging, I followed him outside the cafeteria,” You do know that twenty-four minutes is not enough time to complete an entire quiz, right?”   “Yeah. That is why Lucian and you are spending an entire afternoon off school,”   “D-Did you just say Lucian? What has he got to do with our assignment?” a frown etched on my eyebrows.   “Hey partner, “I looked up, meeting Lucian’s unsmiling gaze.   Someone really had to be kidding me right now.
