Raven’s POV
I was the best hockey player in Glacier Fangs but unfortunately, I’m a woman.
I cut across the ice hard enough that my edges bit. The puck stayed with me because if I wanted it to, it would. I saw two defenders closed in from the left. I calculated the weight of their skates and angle they were taking.
There was a split second before they would have me boxed so I cut right instead.
I made sure it was quicker than they expected and they swallowed ice. I would have laughed if it was a new victory but it’s like every other day on the ice for me. The Glacier Fangs aren’t challenging enough for me but they still underestimate me.
My eyes went all over the field and Julien was already there because he knew exactly where to stand. Like we have practiced a hundred times before when it’s empty.
I shoveled the puck to him fast and watched him take over then bury it. He is actually improving and I’ll take all the credit for it.
The arena lost it then. There were whistles and screaming and howling and the boom of the crowd as they stamped their feet like they wanted to break the ice.
I watched the other players tap sticks against the boards, slap gloves together and the voices started roaring his name like he’d done something impossible. I would say it was impossible without me but I don’t like the spotlight. He should take it as usual.
“YES CAPTAIN!”
“JULIEN!”
I came to a stop breathing heavily as I watched him raise his stick to the crowd. He was taking all the credit and the howls with practiced ease of the future alpha and captain of Glacier Fangs.
He looked over at me for a second with a nod acknowledgement then turned back to the noise. I found myself smiling back at home from ear to ear, blood rushing through me.
A single attention from Julien always has my heart skittering around my chest. Blushing hard like a school girl, I went to the bathroom to change into my regular outfit.
No, I'm not allowed to go to the locker room because even though they allow me to play at practice only. They don’t let me do that outside of it. I’m still not a player as they always like to remind me.
I used the bathroom, returned the clothes and then went on my merry way. I was only meant to teach Julian a few tricks that they have acknowledged only I have in the pack. They tried finding another solution but no one knows puck and ice like I do.
Since the practice ended slower than usual, I know I have to get myself dinner. They won’t leave any remains for me in the pack house.
“Shit.” I cursed when I glanced down at my hands to find that I’m still wearing gloves.
I ran back inside to keep them in the laundry room when I heard voices echoing down the hallway and they were familiar. I wasn’t even trying to listen but I just and then didn’t walk away fast enough. Thanks to my omega-ness, they won’t smell me.
Most omegas have this sweet scent that floods the hallway whenever they are around but not me. Mine barely exists right from birth.
“…you’re overthinking it.” It was Julien’s voice still sounding pleased about practice.
I paused without meaning to because this is Julien! The boy I have been crushing on since childhood and he only recently started giving me his full attention.
“I see the way you look at her, Julien.” It was his girlfriend’s voice (Sadie) and she sounded really pissed.
Julien chuckled dismissively as if she was in over her head. I leaned closer frowning because it sounded like they were talking about me.
“Look at her how?” He asked, then I heard the sound of the locker closing.
“Like she matters or you are returning her crush or some s**t. You even made her f*****g blush earlier.” She snapped.
There was a small silence that followed and for a second I thought something real might come after it. Maybe him admitting he likes me or some s**t like that. Yeah, I’m in over my head but…. It didnt.
“Because she blushed, you think I’d ever choose her?” he let out a short laugh, sounding very entertained. “She’s useful. That’s it.”
“Then you should stop being soft with her and show her that she is JUST useful. She is all over you like a f*****g whore.” Her heels made clicks on the tile.
Useful??? Julien wouldn’t last ten minutes on the ice without me.
“Relax.” He murmured followed by a kissing sound. “You know me better than that.”
Then there was more sound of them kissing and breathing hard. Tears pooled in my eyes and I quickly turn and ran down the hallway in my worn sneakers. They probably won’t hear me with the way they were going.
I knew I never had a chance with Julien when he got together with Sadie a few months ago. I always thought they’d break up at soem point like she does with all the other boys she’s dated. He seems very serious about her though.
He even told me he could see her being his Luna in the future. I thought his eyes would clear eventually and I can still shoot my shot.
My grip tightened slightly around my gloves that I forgot to drop off.
“You’re right, River. He was only going to use me like the rest of them.” I whispered blankly to myself.
My sister had told me this was going to be the case, that I should come with her. I refused and decided to stay in this pack because Julien has finally decided to pay attention to me.
I was only just useful.
Then it’s time for me to become useless and change route. I don’t exactly have a plan B for when my life hits the rock bottom but I’ll have to manage.
I walked into the woods not knowing where exactly I was headed. Maybe Joe’s bar at the end of the pack territory where every single pack can come and go at whim because it is neutral. I’d like to get batshit drunk for the first time in my twenty one years.
I rounded the corner to enter Joe’s when I saw a couple heavily making out. I rolled my eyes because I have had enough of it tonight. First it was hearing and now I’m seeing it.
The scent of a human stopped me in my tracks though. I turned my head to notice that the guy was our defenseman, Cody Mercer and a small human girl with short blonde hair.
“…cant live with you in the pack. They won’t accept me.” She told him in between kisses.
“I’ll come with you to the human world, Jess. I can live without my pack but I can’t live without my mate.” He kissed her again and then they were almost removing clothes.
What an i***t. Leaving your pack for a human? Who even talks like that?
“Are you sure?” She pulled away, her blue eyes shining under the full moon.
“Yes. The pack only wants us when we are convenient anyway. And they’ll replace me as soon as possible.” He sounded a bit hurt.
I turned to leave when Jess’s question stopped me in my tracks. Now this is the most important question for a defenseman. She truly loves him I guess. And love makes us do stupid stuff. I’m a living witness.
“How about hockey?” She asked softly.
“I’ll join the human’s. They won’t have any issue. I can work my way through.” Then he removed her top to reveal perky t**s and it was my cue.
I quickly turned towards Joe’s while blinking at the huge discovery I just made on a random Tuesday night.
Cody Mercer mated to humans and is joining human hockey? Wasn’t he supposed to join Arctic Lykae? Our rival pack and hockey team? But then again, is leaving the pack this easy? Cody already sounds free like his mind was completely made up. As if it was soo easy to just up and leave just like that.
Maybe River wasn’t the brave one for leaving and maybeI was just a pathetic coward for staying.
