Chapter 11: The Galactic Mix-Up

478 Words
The neighborhood was sound asleep at 3:00 AM when the sky over Las Cruces suddenly ripped open. It wasn't a subtle phenomenon; a shimmering, violet aperture tore through the clouds, and a massive, pulsating metallic craft descended with the grace of a falling boulder. Zax and Pip, who had been dozing on the foot of Leo’s bed, bolted upright. "Finally!" Pip yipped, his tail thumping against the mattress. "The Collective has arrived. I knew their logistics were slow, but this is acceptable." "It's about time," Zax added, already grooming his fur into a more respectable state. "I have grown weary of the local diet. I dream of synthesized tuna mousse and the cold, sterile air of our home sector." They woke Leo, who stumbled out of bed, rubbing his eyes. "Is it time? You're really leaving?" "The retrieval is imminent," Zax announced, pacing toward the window. "Stay here, young pet. We wouldn't want you getting caught in the gravity thrusters." The trio scrambled out the window and sprinted toward the park, where the ship was hovering just feet above the playground. It was magnificent—a hulking, chrome-plated beast that hummed with a sound like a thousand deep-tuned cellos. Zax and Pip stood proudly in the center of the swing set, waiting for the extraction beam. "Prepare to be amazed, Leo," Zax whispered. "The technology of the High Orbit Collective is—" A hatch on the side of the craft slid open, and a giant, mechanical claw descended. It didn't reach for the pets. Instead, it swung wildly, scooping up a discarded pile of overflowing trash bags from the park’s dumpster. "What is that?" Pip barked, his ears drooping. "Why is it... taking the refuse?" A booming, synthesized voice emanated from the ship. "Sector 7-G Sanitation Drones successfully retrieved. Proceeding to next dump-point. Have a stellar cycle." "Wait!" Zax screamed, leaping onto a park bench. "We are not refuse! We are ranking officers of the Collective! Abort! Identify yourself!" The ship didn't even pause. Its thrusters flared, flattening the swing set with a gust of ionized wind. Within five minutes, the ship had accelerated into the upper atmosphere, leaving behind only the smell of ozone and the sight of the dumpster—now suspiciously empty. Zax stared at the empty sky, his jaw hanging open. "They... they took the trash," Pip said, his voice a hollow whisper. "They literally mistook our distress signal for a request for intergalactic waste collection." "I am going to file a formal complaint," Zax hissed, his tail puffing up until it was three times its normal size. "I am going to dismantle the entire logistics department of the Collective with my bare claws." Leo stood behind them, stifling a laugh that quickly turned into a sympathetic sigh. "Well... at least the park is cleaner?" "Don't," Zax growled, narrowing his eyes. "Just don't."
