The Alien Pet Expedition

The descent was, by all accounts, humiliating. Zax, a cat of the High Orbit Collective, clutched the console of the scout ship with his front paws, his whiskers twitching in annoyance. Beside him, Pip, a dog of equal standing, was frantically tapping at a holographic display that flickered with error codes. "I told you the atmospheric filters were calibrated for a gas giant, not this... this dust-covered rock," Zax hissed, his tail lashing behind him. "It was a minor miscalculation!" Pip barked, his voice sharp with stress. "Besides, the navigation charts said this sector was uninhabited. How was I to know there would be a gravity well?" The ship shuddered violently as it pierced the atmosphere of Earth. Through the viewport, Zax watched the blurry green and brown landscape of a suburban neighborhood rush toward them. They weren’t prepared for this. On their home planet, cats and dogs were the architects of society, bipedal masters of industry who kept humans—little, furless, chaotic things—as pets. "Prepare for impact," Zax commanded, bracing himself. "And for pity's sake, keep your tail in." The ship didn't land so much as it plowed into the soft earth of a backyard, burying its nose in a patch of neglected petunias. Silence returned to the yard, broken only by the hiss of cooling vents and the frantic chirping of the ship's internal sensors. Zax pushed open the emergency hatch. The air of this planet was thick and smelled of ozone and damp grass. He looked out at the sprawling, primitive yard—the wooden fence, the discarded plastic balls, the sprawling shadow of a house. "Look at this," Zax said, gesturing with a claw to the chaos of the yard. "Untamed. Primitive. Disorganized." Pip scrambled out behind him, his ears flopping comically as he tried to regain his composure. "Agreed. But first things first, Zax. We need to stay hidden until the repair drones arrive. If the locals see us—the real us—they’ll be nothing but trouble." Zax looked up at the house, his golden eyes narrowing. He could see movement behind a glass door. "We are high-ranking officials, Pip. We do not do 'hiding' well." "We do if we want to survive," Pip countered, his voice lowering. "Initiate the disguise protocols. Now." Zax sighed, a long, weary sound. "Fine. Let’s see what sort of low-life forms we have to impersonate to survive this backwater planet."
