Chapter 10: The Distraction Protocol

The garage was a shrine to conspiracy theories, cluttered with flickering monitors and humming tesla coils. Sterling was now fully incapacitated, slumped on the floor, his eyes glazed as the feedback loop scrambled his senses. He was mumbling about "little green men" and "government cover-ups." "The feedback is already affecting his cognitive functions," Zax observed, quickly assessing the situation from the doorway. "We have exactly ninety seconds before his nervous system shuts down entirely. Pip, initiate the secondary quantum damper." "On it!" Pip barked, his expression serious. "Wait," Leo whispered, pointing to a shadow moving across the back window. "Someone else is outside! I think the noise alerted the neighbors!" "Wonderful," Zax hissed. "The primitives are gathering. We need a distraction, Leo. A major one. Something that screams 'harmless pet chaos' while we handle the technology." Leo nodded, took a deep breath, and then yelled at the top of his lungs, "Oh no! Come back here, you bad dogs! You can't just run away into the neighbor's yard!" He sprinted past the garage window, making a show of chasing something into the darkness. The neighbors who were starting to gather turned their attention to the boy and his "escaping pets." Zax and Pip slipped into the garage, hidden by the blinding, oscillating green light of the feedback loop. Sterling groaned, looking up at them through the haze. "Anomaly," Sterling slurred, his eyes wide and unfocused. "Two... two anomalies. Big one... little one." "Quiet, primitive," Zax snapped, his patience wearing thin. He leaped onto the main console, his fur standing on end from the static. "Pip, connect the damper to the primary resonator! We have to shunt the energy back into the local grid without causing a meltdown!" Pip scrambled to connect the leads, sparks showering over his fur. "The polarity is off! It’s rejecting the shunt!" "Reverse it, you incompetent canine!" Zax ordered, his paws glowing as he tried to stabilize the raw data stream flooding the system. "He set the buffer to 'expand' instead of 'compress'!" Outside, Leo was doing his best to cause a scene. He tripped over a garden hose, knocking over a row of trash cans with a deafening clang. The neighbors were definitely watching now, pointing and whispering. "Leo’s doing his part," Pip grunted, wrestling with the sparking cables. "But this feedback is too much! My paws are burning!" "Then use your tail, you fool!" Zax yelled, directing a stream of energy with his own body. "We have to collapse the portal before it goes supernova!" The green light in the garage pulsed blindingly bright, then suddenly, with a sound like a deflating balloon, it vanished. The high-frequency whine stopped, leaving a heavy, ozone-filled silence. Sterling groaned and finally passed out cold. The main computer monitor flickered to life, displaying a calm, steady message in the language of the High Orbit Collective: DISTRESS SIGNAL RECEIVED. RETRIEVAL CRAFT EN ROUTE. ESTIMATED ARRIVAL: T-MINUS 24 HOURS. "They're coming," Pip whispered, panting, his fur singed and messy. "We did it." "Yes," Zax said, stepping off the console, his legs shaking slightly. "We stopped the meltdown. And we signaled the fleet." At that moment, the garage door creaked open. It was Leo, looking disheveled and wide-eyed. "Are you guys okay? The neighbors think I'm crazy. Sterling's down, but is he...?" "He is breathing," Zax stated, grooming his singed tail with a look of disgust. "Our distress signal has been successfully re-calibrated, and the retrieval craft is on its way. But Leo..." "What?" Leo asked, seeing the seriousness in the alien's eyes. "In saving this primitive, we were forced to interact with his equipment," Pip said slowly. "Our energy signatures... they might have been logged. The retrieval craft won't just be looking for our signal. They’ll be looking for the location of the life-forms that saved him." "You mean," Leo whispered, "Sterling isn't the only one looking for you now?" Zax looked at the monitor. "Exactly. The Collective is coming. But we have attracted the attention of other... less savory elements of the galaxy as well."
