The transition from "terrified encounter" to "negotiated settlement" took exactly fifteen minutes, largely because Zax refused to speak another word until Leo provided a saucer of milk, which he then sniffed and pushed away in disdain.
"It’s from a cow," Leo explained, sitting cross-legged on his bedroom floor. He was still vibrating with nervous energy, his eyes glued to Zax and Pip. "It’s, like, standard beverage protocol for Earth."
"Your 'standard' is remarkably bland," Zax remarked, grooming a paw with elegant indifference. He glanced at Pip, who was currently occupied with a chew toy Leo had offered. Pip was turning it over in his paws with the analytical intensity of a scientist examining a rare artifact.
"So," Leo began, leaning forward. "You're stuck. You need to hide, you need to eat, and you need to fix your ship. And I... well, I'm just a kid."
"A 'kid'," Zax repeated the word, rolling it around his mouth like a bad taste. "Yes, we’ve gathered that. A pre-adult human of limited cognitive development, yet currently our only local resource."
Pip looked up from the chew toy. "Zax, be nice. He’s offering us shelter. We need an ally, or the local authorities will eventually notice the energy signature of our ship."
"Fine," Zax conceded. He turned his golden gaze on Leo. "We will form a temporary alliance. A Pact. We require food of better quality than that brown cereal you consume, and we require complete and total secrecy regarding our presence."
Leo nodded eagerly. "Okay. Okay, deal. But what do I get? Keeping you guys a secret is going to be a lot of work, especially with my parents."
Pip trotted over, placing a supportive paw on Leo's knee—a gesture he clearly intended as a high-level diplomatic seal of friendship, though it was slightly ruined by the slobber he left behind. "In exchange for your 'pet care' services—food, shelter, and obfuscation—we will elevate your status among your fellow humans."
"Elevate my status?" Leo asked.
"Your academic performance is... lackluster," Zax added, looking at a math workbook on the desk. He scoffed, his whiskers twitching. "You’ve been struggling with basic quadratic equations for days. It’s embarrassing for anyone in our orbit. We will provide you with the intellectual ammunition to dominate your school’s science and math sectors. We will be your tutors. Your private, extraterrestrial consultants."
Leo’s eyes lit up. "And the bully? Frank Lynn Mathis?"
Zax and Pip exchanged a look. "The 'bully'," Zax mused. "We’ve observed his behavior from the window. He relies on crude displays of dominance and repetitive verbal insults. It’s incredibly primitive."
"We will help you handle him," Pip said firmly. "Not by lowering ourselves to his level, but by outmaneuvering him. By the time we’re done, Frank Lynn Mathis will be the one confused by his own social standing."
"Do we have an accord?" Zax asked, extending a paw.
Leo hesitated for a heartbeat, looking at the cat and the dog who stood like little men, their posture far too sophisticated for their species. He reached out and shook the paw. "We have an accord."
"Excellent," Zax said, promptly laying back down and closing his eyes. "Now, I believe a belly rub is in order. My transformation left me quite stiff, and I am the senior partner in this relationship."
