Chapter 6: Operation Camouflage

The annual "Community Pet Fair" was the worst place on Earth, according to Zax. It was a sprawling, chaotic nightmare of leashes, barking, and sticky-handed toddlers, all held in the public park a few blocks away. Unfortunately, it was also the location of the school's "Student Showcase" event—the perfect place for Leo to prove his newfound academic brilliance, provided he could keep his two "pets" under control. "Remind me why we are exposing ourselves to this herd of unruly bipeds?" Zax hissed, currently being carried in a stylish—but humiliating—pet carrier that Leo had convinced him was 'tactical concealment.' "Because I have to present my Science Fair project," Leo whispered, adjusting his backpack. "And if I leave you at home, Sterling will definitely break in. We have to stick together." Pip, walking on a leash that he secretly found quite comfortable despite his vocal protests, kept his head on a swivel. "There he is," Pip whispered. "Three o'clock, by the funnel cake stand. Sterling." The Alien Hunter was looking more disheveled than ever, clutching a bulky, modified scanner that looked like a toaster wired to a car battery. He was scanning every passing poodle and tabby, his eyes scanning for the specific energy signature that had been plaguing his gear. "He’s narrowing the search," Zax observed, peeking through the mesh of the carrier. "He knows the frequency is near." As Leo approached the exhibition tables, Frank Lynn Mathis stepped out from behind a concession stand, looking for an easy target. "Hey, look who it is," Frank sneered, blocking the path. "Little Leo and his freak-show pets. You think you're some genius now, huh?" Frank reached out, intending to yank the pet carrier away from Leo. "Target identified," Zax whispered. "Pip, initiate the 'Unexplained Phenomenon' protocol." Pip didn't hesitate. He wiggled out of his collar—an easy feat for an alien engineer—and darted behind Frank. Using a tiny, concealed sonic emitter from their ship’s salvage, Pip played a high-frequency tone directly into Frank's ear—a frequency only the bully could hear. Frank stumbled, clutching his head. "What is that?! What's that noise?!" "It’s your conscience, Frank," Leo said, standing tall. "Maybe you should listen to it." "You're a weirdo!" Frank yelled, stumbling backward, tripping over his own shoelaces and tumbling right into Sterling. The collision sent Sterling’s scanner flying. It hit the ground, sparks showering the pavement, and landed directly in a bucket of melting ice from a nearby soda cooler. Hiss. The scanner was dead. Sterling stood up, soaked and frantic, frantically tapping at the ruined, smoking mess of his equipment. "My readings! The anomaly! It’s gone!" "Let's move," Zax commanded from the carrier. Leo quickly grabbed Pip, tucked Zax securely under his arm, and slipped into the thick of the crowd. As they retreated, Zax allowed himself a small, satisfied smirk. "Primitive, yet effective," Zax purred. "Frank is humiliated, the Hunter is neutralized, and we remain undetected." Pip looked up at Leo, his tail giving a soft wag. "Not bad for a young pet, Leo. You handled the human conflict with decent tactical awareness." Leo grinned, finally feeling like he was in control. "Thanks. Now... can we go home and work on that extra credit?" "Only if there's tuna," Zax negotiated. "High-quality, mind you. None of that canned sludge."
