Chapter One The Skyline
Daniella stepped into the law office, its polished floors reflecting the bright fluorescents overhead. She felt a blend of excitement and anxiety as whispers of anticipation buzzed around her. Lawyers clad in sharp suits murmured about the new boss—a phantom figure shrouded in rumors of wealth and charm. As she navigated through the sleek hallways, she wondered what it would be like to work under someone so admired. Her heart raced a little faster as she approached the conference room, where the sound of laughter and conversation leaked through the slightly ajar door. “I know that voice,” she thought, intrigued yet hesitant. The familiarity sent shivers down her spine. Pushing open the door, she was greeted with a warm rush of laughter and the sight of her colleagues gathered around the long oak table, eyes fixed on the charismatic figure at the head. Daniella's breath hitched in her throat; there he was, ‘Christian’, her long-time nemesis—the boy who had stolen her heart and shattered it all those years ago. Daniella felt the weight of conflicting emotions. Memories of high school flooded back, vivid and bittersweet—the prom night, the dare game, the kisses, the rough s*x, the leaked video, the school transfer, and the inevitable heartbreak. The charming playboy had left a mark on her that time couldn’t erase, and here he was, the prominent attorney she never wanted to see again. Christian Amond-shaped eyes sparkled as he addressed the room, a confident smile playing on his lips. “I’m glad to be here. I look forward to working with all of you.” His voice was deep and smooth, like honey drizzling over warm pancakes. Daniella’s heart raced, but she reminded herself of the walls she had built to shield herself from the boy who had hurt her. “Daniella!” her colleague called out, snapping her back to the present. The entire room turned to watch her reaction. “Come join us! Meet the new boss!” Every instinct urged her to retreat, to escape the memories, but the moment felt pivotal. She took a deep breath and stepped forward, forcing a smile onto her face. As she approached the table, Christian’s eyes locked onto hers, sending a jolt of electricity straight through her. “Dani” he acknowledged, his tone a mix of surprise and something akin to nostalgia. On my him calls her “Dani”. The room felt smaller, crowded with unspoken words and the weight of the past. “It’s been a while.” “Yeah, well, some things change,” she replied, injecting feigned nonchalance into her voice. Inside, however, her heart raced like a wild stallion, memories intertwining with the present. “What was it, fourteen years? Fifteen?” he asked, tilting his head slightly as he watched her, seemingly nostalgic. “Long enough,” she replied curtly, clenching her fists to hide the tremor. “Congratulations on the new position.” “Thanks,” he said, a hint of genuine appreciation lighting his eyes. “I hope we can work together without too much friction.” Daniella didn’t respond, aware of the tension hanging in the air. She survived Junior high school filled with wounds and hatred because of him; now they were thrust back into each other’s orbit in this professional environment. Throughout the introduction, she stole glances at him, trying to decipher how much he had changed. More mature, undoubtedly, but there was the boyish grin—the very one that had made her crush on him. It reminded her of the prom night she walked up to him to ask him for a dance before he invited her to the dare game. Later that day, as the meeting transitioned into casual networking, Daniella tried to engage with her colleagues, but her thoughts kept drifting back to Christian. She overheard snippets of conversations around her, intermingled laughter, and light-hearted jests, but all she could focus on was the weight of unspoken words between them. Finally, she mustered the courage to step away from the crowd, needing a moment of solace in the law library’s quiet corners. Surrounded by shelves of leather-bound books, she found a small alcove and slumped into the armchair, hoping to quell the whirlwind of thoughts swirling in her mind. “What are you doing here alone?” The voice cut through her thoughts like a knife. She looked up; Christian was leaning against the shelf, arms casually crossed, that infuriatingly charming grin plastered across his face. “Just taking a moment,” she replied defensively, brushing a loose strand of hair behind her ear. “Making sure you don’t trip on your own thoughts?” he teased lightly. “Hardly,” she snapped. “This isn’t high school, and it sure isn’t a game, Christian.” He glanced at her with an intensity that made her melt slightly. “You’re right. It’s not. It’s just…I didn’t expect to see you here. You’ve really made a name for yourself, haven’t you?” She swallowed hard, the compliment melting some of her defenses. “And what about you? Playing the same old game?” Choosing to ignore the jab, he stepped closer. “I’m here to work, just like you. And believe it or not, I’ve grown up.” She wanted to believe him. A part of her desperately craved to reconnect, to dive back into the depths of the one night they had together, but the other half cautioned against it. “We weren’t exactly friends back then,” she murmured, regret hanging on her words. “I know,” he replied, sincerity replacing the teasing tone. “But what if we could start over? Showing the world we’ve both changed? Maybe, just maybe, we can find common ground.” Daniella hesitated, weighing the possibility of rekindling something fragile, something that had the potential to hurt her all over again. But as Christian’s gaze held hers, she felt a flicker of hope—a chance to rewrite their story so he could correct his mistake. “Maybe,” she finally whispered, her heart beating loudly against her ribcage. As the sun began to dip below the skyline, casting a warm golden hue through the library windows. “I have to go now” she said but before she could finish, he held her hand up and asked “engaged” ? Daniella but her lower lips and hesitated before answering “yes, congratulations to you too” she paused, closed her eyes in regret and continued “I can see you are married”. She immediately grabbed her hands from him, she gently brushed her shoulder beside his as she left the library. With a teasing smile, she whispered, 'Congratulations once more,' just before slipping through the door, leaving him captivated and utterly breathless.
