After spending some time with Melody, it is time to put her to bed. She is a really good kid and wants to sleep in her bed after I have read her a book. When I am done, I call Amanda and work a few hours on my computer. When all the work for the company is done, I start working on the house again, doing everything that does not make a lot of noise. After two more hours, I feel tired. I make myself some tea and go sit on the porch with a good book. This is my routine, and I love it.
As I am reading, I can see something moving from the corner of my eyes. That startles me a little because nobody in town usually bothers me so late at night. Most people in town go to far lengths to not be seen with me alone. As I look at the figure walking towards me, I start to recognize the features. It is Will walking towards me from his parents' house. I did not even think about the possibility as they live so close. They are nice people, but we don't talk much.
Will walk slowly up on my porch, keeping eye contact the whole time. "Fancy seeing you here!" he says while smiling at me with the panty dropping smile of his. Fokus! I shout at myself in my head. I can not get too close to him! "Yes, what a scandal! You are finding me sitting on my own porch at night. Who would have thought of this happening?" I say dramatically, hoping to scare him away with my sarcasm. To my surprise, that makes him laugh. "I sat on the porch of my parents since they are already in bed. I couldn't help but see you out here as well. Figured we didn't both have to be alone when we were this close to each other. Can I take a seat?" He says, pointing at the chair beside me with his head. What can I say without being really rude? I just nodded, figuring I lost this fight.
He sits down all chipper and looks around at my house. "You have cleaned up this place really well. I remember this place from when I was little. It looked like ha haunted house, and I had nightmared as a kid about it." He says while laughing. I have so many comebacks I barely know which one to choose. "Don't worry, you never have to come inside this house again." I say with a smile. Perfect way to keep him from getting closer. He just smiles back at me and says: "I was trying to give you a compliment. The house looks really nice and more like a home now. I am not scared of haunted hoses anymore, so don't worry about that."
Well he just brushes right trough my defense mechanisms as if I didn't put up the wall in the first place. This is the first time I met someone who is so hard to scare away. Usually I don't have to do much to make the men in this small town run the other way. I answered with a small "Thanks" not sure what else to say, so I change the subject. "So, do you want some tea?" I get up to find him a cup before I say something more embarrassing.
I take a deep breath when I am standing in the kitchen. Why am I so nervous? I don't even want him to like me. I actually want him to not care about me so that he will leave me alone. I am afraid that he will figure out all my secrets if he keeps hovering around me all the time. I don't want him to hate me because his parents are my neighbors and I like them very much. I take another breath and decide to be nice to him, but boring. That way he will lose interest in me and start to do something else.
I go back out and give him the cup with hot water and the tea bag, sugar and milk to put in it. I settle myself in the rocking chair opposite of him and act like I don't have a care in the world. William thanks me for the tea and lean backwards while smiling at me. "So, what do you do for a living?" He asks casually. I look at him for a little while, wondering if someone made him ask me. Seems that he is just making conversation. "That is the question the whole town is speculating about, but nobody dares to ask." I say with a slightly bitter laugh. I pause for dramatic effect before telling him in a casual tone: "I am an independent jewelry designer." I say, leaving out that I own one of the biggest jewelry companies in the country. Just a few knows that I own the jewelry company, and that is just how I like it. William scoot to the tip of the chair and asks me with a smurk on his mouth: "So now I know your secret, what will you do to keep me silent?" I laugh out loud: "Tell everyone in town if you want. It is not really a secret I just don't feel like defending myself to people who will not listen. Tell anyone you want, but most of the town will not believe you because they think they know better. I am rumored to do a lot of things for money. Everyone knows I got a lot of money, but nobody knows how I got it. Therefore, some people in town started rumors of how I sell my body and so on... Nobody asked me, and I knew they wouldn't listen if I explained myself. So when my parents disowned me and people around town got afraid to be seen with me alone, I didn't really care. I made them respect me and Melody in another way so that Melody could live peacefully and not be bullied because of me." I look at him serious now: "I am telling you this so you know what people will say if you keep spending time alone with me."
His smile vanished, and he suddenly looked angry. Good, that will keep him away! His next words supriced me: "I will not tolerate anybody talking about you this way. I don't care about my reputation. I am a businessman and I have all the things I need. I am in between projects right now, since my last project is self sustainable. I will look for something else to start on as soon as I am done with my vecation. It does not scare me that you have a lovely daughter or that you have a bad reputation in this town. I find you intriguing and would like to know you better." I do not know how to react to that so I fokus on what I can respond to: "That is a nice way to say you are a millionaire." I laugh at his surprised expression. "How did you know?" He asks, seemingly shocked that I know. That makes me laugh even harder. When I finally calm down, I tell him: "Your mom was so proud of you that she told many in town. As you know, rumors spread fast around town, and now almost everybody knows. You are probably going to be hunted down by the towns three most eligible bachelorettes." He smirked: "Are you one of them?" I looked at him as if he was crazy "God no! I am not dating anybody right now! I have a kid, a house to renovate, and a job on the side. I do not have time for dates and romance right now." I say with conviction. Time to throw his fokus away from me. "So the bachelorettes are Lizzy, Beth, and Angelica. Lizzy and Beth are up to about anything you can ask of them. Beth even shaved her head for a guy. Angelica wants a husband. She expects a ring after about a week of dating. If you know, you know she told me once." I look back at William, and he looks pale. He tells me about the older ladies he ran away from who wanted him to date their granddaughters. I tell him that they are Lizzy and Beth's grandparents and that he should expect more the next couple of days. He starts pacing back and forth on the porch looking pale and agitated. I hope Mr. and Mrs. Bane can forgive me for making their son run out of town.
