I can see she is struggling to respond. I don't know why. I only said I wanted to help. Not that I want to have her in my bed, which is what I really wish right now. Not only is she beautiful, but she is smart and well accomplished as well. She could have lived in luxury anywhere she wanted, but she is renovating this old house by herself, and everything she does is well though through to give Melody the best life possible. She is so selfless that she only cares about the effect her life has on Melody.
"But why stay here in this small town? You could live anywhere. It's way easier to blend in with the crowd in a bigger town." I say, not because I want her to move, but because I don't understand. She looks at me with a sad smile: "What if something happens to me? Or what if somebody finds out who I am and want to kidnap Melody? In this small town, the whole community will come together for Melody. A stranger wouldn't be able to talk to Melody before the whole town knows. If something happens to me, the whole town knows Amanda is legally Melodys guardian and to not leave her alone with my parents. If I lived in another town, that wouldn't be easy to control. The people in this town may talk s**t about me, but nobody dares go against me or Melody." She looks determined. I can't help it, but before I can think about it, I walk over and hug her. All this talk about something happening to her is clogging my throat. Keyla becomes stiff in my embrace, but then she relaxes and pat my back: "It's Okey! I am not planning on anything happening to me. It is just a contingency plan. You should have one when you have kids."
I back off, and I am about to say something when her phone rings. She looks at the display and gives me the 'one minute' sign with her hand. She answers: "Hi again, Matt! Forgot something?" She listened, but I can't hear what he is saying. "That would be perfect. How long will it take? Perfect! Thank you! Bye!" She says before hanging up the phone.
I can't help but feel a bit jealous. The guy was just here alone with her in her house. Now he is calling and checking up on her. I can't help but ask: "So? You and Matt..? Are you together?" She looks at me, but I can't read her expression. Maybe I asked something too personally. The apology is about to leave my lips when she starts laughing hard. When she can finally breathe again, she tells me: "No, that would have been too weird since he is my sisters brother." "Doesn't that make him your brother too?" I am really confused right now. How can they have the same sister and not be related? She answers me: "No! My sister, Catherine, and I have the same mother, but not the same father. Her father had a child with another woman before he met our mom. My mom took custody of Catherine before she met my dad, who later adopted her. So Matt and I are not related, but we became close when he got to town to get to know Catherine. She didn't want to admit she had another biological father, and she refused to meet him. I met up with him instead, and he became like a brother to me." I stare at her as I try to absorb all this information. "Oh!" Is all I am able to answer. She chuckles and says: "Don't worry about it! Oh, that reminds me! I should warn you about my sister. When she hears that you are a millionaire and in town, she will do anything to catch you." That makes me a little puzzled: "Didn't you say there were only three bachelorettes in town yesterday?"
Keyla chuckles: "That is true. Catherine is married, but her husband is not rich. She will divorce him the second you say that you will buy her anything she wants." Wow, so her sister is a gold digger and doesn't know Keyla is a billioner. Seems Keyla doesn't have a good relationship with her family. That is kind of sad. I love how cose I am to my parents and cousins.
"Look at the time, I got to go get Melody from kindergarten. Thank you for your help and for keeping my secret!" Keyla says. I go back home to my parents and keep thinking of what I have learned.
In the late evening, I am out on the porch again. My parents love to go to bed early because they wake up early, too. My eyes wander to Keylas house. I can see her sitting on the porch reading. I walk down the steps, on my way towards her, when a car comes fast up the driveway and stops right in front of her house. There is a dust cloud covering the car, so I can't see who it is. I have an uneasy feeling and walk a little faster towards them.
I hear banging sounds, like someone hitting the door. I am 50 feet away when I spot them. Keyla looks up from her book at the drunk sheriff. "Is there something you want, sheriff?" Keyla says with an unnerving calmness in her voice. The sheriff jumps around, clearly surprised to see her sitting outside. "YOU!" He points a finger at her. I keep walking towards them, ready to intervene if necessary. "You need to stop sleeping around! You are the only capatable woman to me in this town. You can't go w*****g around. You need to marry me and be a stay at home mom! We can send Melody to boarding school when we have our own children. She will love it!" Mike says looking very drunk. Keyla is leaning backwards and look at him while speaking very clearly: "As I have told you before sheriff, I am not interested in you. I don't want to be with you. Do you have any proof of your allegations? Since you are the towns sheriff and all, you should have better proof than rumors, right?" I can see he is getting mad. What is she doing? Why is she provoking a drunk sheriff? This can give her a lot of trouble! Mike suddenly takes hold of Keylas neck, but before I can get to them, Mike is thrown over the rails and is landing on is back on the lawn. "Smile to the hidden camera, Sheriff! My lawyer is going to have a field day with you tomorrow." Keyla says while picking up her phone, showing him the image from the camera.
Mike looks agitated, and then he straightens up to standing position and points his finger at Keyla, shouting: "You will delete the footage now!" Keyla looks at him with a bored expression."I can't..." But before she can finish her sentence, Mike points his gun at her. I react right away and run in front of Keyla. Successfully blocking her from the gun. I am shocked when Keyla finishes her sentence by saying: "We are streaming live."
Mike's face pale. He points the gun on Keyla that pokes her head out from behind me, but I hurry to block her again. Then he pointed the gun to the house, trying to shoot the cameras. "It's too late for that, Mike. People have started commenting. The only thing that will help you now is to put down the gun and apologize." I give Keyla a side eye, seriously shut up, woman! Suddenly, we hear sirens. Then, another sheriff's car comes up the driveway. The other sheriff jumps out of the car but stands behind the open door while pointing his gun at Mike. "Put down the gun, Mike! I am not asking you again!" Mike gives a sharp look towards Keyla before he puts his hands up and throws the gun on the ground.
"Thank you, Dave! That was fast." Keyla says as she walks to stand beside me like nothing happened. She doesn't seem affected at all about what just happened, but my puls is sky high.
