Securing funding

1 week later *Lena* The polished wooden floors of my grandfather’s company gleam under the bright lights, a stark contrast to the buzzing uncertainty that swirls within me. It’s good to be back, yet the familiarity is laced with a hint of anxiety. As the CCO I know I need to make bold moves, and proposing funding for Zac’s invention is my first step. This is my first time coming with a suggestion like this since I took over the job. My grandfather believes a company is better when everyone works together, so I will have to pitch it to the other employees. “Okay, everyone,” I announce, standing in front of the conference room table, my palms slightly sweaty. The staff members, a mix of eager interns and seasoned veterans, turn their attention to me. “I have a proposal that I believe could revolutionize our approach to disaster relief. I want to discuss funding for a new storm prediction device. It is still at the early stages, but the inventor need funds and help to make a prototype.” The murmurs begin, excitement rippling through the room like electricity. Then, a familiar voice cuts through the buzz. It’s James, he is still the junior marketing director, as I did not want to seem petty and have him fired. He leans back in his chair, arms crossed, a smirk playing on his lips. “Oh, I see where this is going. Lena wants to fund her boyfriend’s little gadget. How very professional of you.” I feel my cheeks heat up, anger bubbling beneath the surface. “This isn’t about personal relationships, James. It’s about helping people in danger through innovative technology. Something you’d know if you weren’t so busy with your outdated marketing strategies.” The room falls silent, eyes darting between us as if anticipating a showdown. James shrugs, his expression dripping with condescension. “Sure, Lena. But let’s be honest. Are you really interested in the project, or just in the guy behind it? It sounds like a conflict of interest to me.” “I’m here to do what’s best for the company,” I retort, my voice steady despite the rising tide of frustration. “Zac’s invention has the potential to save lives. Isn’t that what we’re all about?” A few heads nod, but James isn’t finished. “And what’s next? Allowing him to skimp on the traditional vetting process just because you’re all cozy with him? It’s unprofessional, Lena. He is not even an inventor, he is an internet influencer.” My heart races, but I refuse to back down. “If I’m being honest, I’m surprised you’re questioning my professionalism when your own track record has been less than stellar. This is about making a difference, and I’m willing to bet on innovation over ego.” There’s a moment of tension, but before James can respond, I gather my resolve and stride out of the conference room. My heart pounds in my chest as I head straight to my grandfather’s office, desperate for his support. I knock on the door, and he beckons me in with a warm smile. “Lena! Back so soon from your holiday? I hope you’re well-rested. We have a lot of work ahead.” I take a deep breath, my determination coiling tightly within me. “Grandpa, I need to talk to you about something important. It’s about funding a project… I meet this guy Zac, he is building a storm prediction device. I believe it could change how we respond to natural disasters.” His brow furrows, but curiosity glimmers in his eyes. “Zac, you say? The young man your brother mentioned?” “Yes,” I reply, excitement spilling out of me. When my brother joined me he met Zac and the others and he was rather impressed. “He is trying to develop a prototype that could predict storm patterns with incredible accuracy. We could help save lives, and I think our company should be at the forefront of this innovation.” My grandfather leans back in his chair, contemplating my words. “And you believe this invention has real potential?” I nod vigorously. “Yes! I’ve seen the passion and dedication Zac pours into this project. It’s not just a dream; it’s a tangible solution to a growing problem. But I need your support to make it happen. I pitched it but James is blocking me.” He studies me for a moment, and the weight of his gaze feels like a spotlight. “And what do you propose?” “I suggest we fund the prototype development. We can take it through rigorous testing, and if it proves effective, we can mass produce it and get it integrated into the countries disaster response framework. It would be a significant leap for the company.” A slow smile spreads across his face. “You’re right, Lena. We cannot shy away from innovation, especially when it has the potential to save lives. I’ll personally ensure funds are allocated for the prototype. I want to see this invention come to life.” Relief washes over me, and a surge of pride fills my chest. “Thank you, Grandpa. This means everything to me… and to Zac.” He waves his hand dismissively. “Just make sure you’re prepared for the challenges ahead. Innovation is never easy, but it’s often worth it.” “I will personally go with them to test it and see how it works.” I promise. As I leave his office, I feel lighter, almost euphoric. The tension with James still simmers in the back of my mind, but knowing my grandfather believes in this project gives me strength. I can’t wait to tell Zac the news. The thrill of chasing storms is no longer a distant fantasy; it is about to become a reality, and I will be at the heart of it all. The adventure of a lifetime is waiting before me, and nothing… certainly not James’s petty remarks… can stand in my way.
