*Lena*
The delicious aroma of Soren’s lasagna wafts through the air as we gather around the dinner table, settling into our seats. I can’t shake the lingering warmth from the conversation I had with Zac just moments ago. My heart races as I glance across the table at him, hoping to find that same connection again, but the moment is momentarily overshadowed by the chatter of my new friends.
“So, Lena,” Skip says, his enthusiasm evident as he digs into his first bite. “What did you think? Of the invention I mean. Pretty cool, right?”
I smile, feeling the eyes of everyone at the table on me. “Absolutely,” I reply, my voice steady despite the fluttering in my stomach. “I think it’s groundbreaking. I’ve never met anyone so passionate about using technology for good.”
Zac’s cheeks flush a light pink, and he looks down at his plate, but I can see the corners of his mouth tugging upwards. “Thanks, Lena. That means a lot to me.”
I take a deep breath, my mind racing with possibilities. “I’m going to talk to my grandfather about investing in it. He owns the company, and I think he’d be interested in supporting something that can make a real difference.”
“Really?” Zandra’s eyes widen in surprise. “That would be amazing! It could take this project to the next level.”
Soren leans back in his chair, a mischievous grin on his face. “So, if Zac becomes a millionaire, does that mean we all get some new fancy gear?”
“Only if you promise to stop loosing and breaking stuff,’” Zac laughs, shaking his head. “But seriously, we’re planning to head down south as soon as tornado season starts. We want to test the invention in real conditions. That’s where the real magic happens.”
I lean forward, intrigued. “What’s the plan for that? How will you know where to go?”
“Skip’s been working on some algorithms that can predict storm patterns,” Zac explains, his excitement bubbling over. “We’ll be tracking weather systems and trying to get ahead of the storms. It’ll be a race against time.”
Jules grins, “and of course we have Zac’s famous and sometimes creepy sixth sense for what storms will do.”
“Like the snowstorm,” I nod. “It all sounds thrilling,” I say, my heart pounding as I imagine the adrenaline of chasing storms. “Do you think it’ll work?”
Zac nods vigorously. “I believe it will. But we need to make sure everything is perfect before we test it out in the field.”
“Zandra,” I turn to her, curiosity getting the better of me. “Are you going with them on these storm chases?”
She shakes her head, a hint of disappointment clouding her eyes. “No, Zac won’t let me. He worries too much. It’s safer for me to stay home.”
“Zac, come on,” I chime in, feeling a surge of pity for her. “She should be able to experience this too. It’s part of the adventure!”
Zac’s expression softens, and he looks at his sister with mixed emotions. “You know I just want to keep you safe, Zandra. It’s a dangerous world out there as you know too well.”
I decide not to press it as Zandra nods, so instead I say; “I’ve actually never seen a tornado,” I admit. “Only on tv and in movies and such. But the way you guys talk about storm chasing makes it sound exhilarating.”
Zac’s eyes light up again, and I can feel him leaning forward as if drawn in by the idea. “You could come with us, Lena,” he suggests, his voice low and earnest. “Imagine seeing the invention in action. You’d get to be right in the middle of it all!”
The thought sends a thrill coursing through me. “Really? You’d let me?”
“Absolutely,” he replies, a grin breaking across his face. “I think it would be amazing to have you there. Plus, you’d get to see firsthand how it all works.”
The idea sinks in, and I can hardly contain my excitement. “I would love that!” I exclaim, my heart racing at the thought of being part of something so thrilling, so impactful. The adventure of a lifetime is calling, and I can’t wait to answer.
“Just promise me you’ll keep your head straight and listen to what we tell you,” Zac adds, his expression turning serious. “Storms can be unpredictable.”
“I promise,” I assure him, feeling a rush of adrenaline and a sense of camaraderie building around the table. With each passing moment, I realize that this isn’t just about chasing storms or testing inventions; it’s about being part of something bigger, about helping people and creating a future where safety is within reach.
As we dive back into our dinner, laughter and excitement filling the air, I can’t help but feel that this is just the beginning. The connection with Zac is undeniable, and now, with this adventure on the horizon, I feel something bloom inside me.
