Pilot

I looked down at my phone and saw an alert. I opened my phone and saw that it was an announcement from the president. “Attention all Americans, we are going on lock down. This is not a drill, everyone get home and get to safety. There is a virus that broke out and is morphing humans into creatures.” 

Humans to creatures? I was about to call my brother but the power went out. All of the lights started to flicker and then the whole block lost power. I looked around at the people around me and they were equally as shocked and scared as I was. I started to run home but when I got to my block, everything was destroyed. 

I went to the remains of my house and started grabbing everything that I could fit in one of my bags. I grabbed clothes, my step dad's gun, a few of my brother's knives, and some spray paint. I tucked the gun into the back of my pants and stuffed the knives into my pockets. I started to run but made sure I didn’t make a lot of noise. 

I saw something hunched over a dead dog and almost shrieked. I grabbed the gun and it heard me take the safety off. It started coming after me but I shot it in the head making it die on the spot. It started changing back into its human form and I saw who it was. He was a kid I went to school with. 

I kept going until I got to the high school which was about thirty minutes away from my house. Once I got there I saw a bunch of other people there and people dressed in white hazmat suits testing people. I got behind a group of people I know.

“Hey Tori, are you okay?”

“Yeah, I think. What’re they doing?”

“Testing us for supernatural DNA. They said that whoever has it needs to come with them.”

“And if we don’t want to?”

“I don’t know.”

I took a breath.

“Look, I need to find Hunter. Are you going to stay here and get tested or come with me?”

“I’ll go with you. To be honest, I don’t trust this.”

Everyone agreed and we left there before we could get tested. I walked to the street nearby and drew a symbol that I knew Hunter would remember from when we were kids. It meant “Danger, don’t test.” We started walking again and found a small house that we could take over for the night.

“Does anyone else have weapons?”

A few said yes but a few also said no. I handed each of them a knife.

“Okay, let's secure this house and take turns sleeping so that way we are rested and ready for tomorrow.”

“Okay. First thing in the morning we should go to the store and get things we need.”

“Deal.”

“Actually, let's do that now. There might not be anything left.”

We all agreed and started walking to the nearest store. We stocked up on water, safety kits, some more clothes, weapons, food, etc. Once our bags were completely full, we went back to the house and set up for the night. I decided that I’d be on the first watch and a dude said that he’d help me. We were sitting in silence before he finally decided to talk to me.

“What’s your name again?”

“Tori.”

“Cool, cool. I’m Kyree.”

“Okay?”

“Look, I’m just trying to make small talk.”

“I know and I’m sorry. I’m just not in the small talk mood.”

“I get it. I’m worried too. We need to find a place where we can start bringing people to keep everyone safe.”

“Like a small town.”

“Exactly what I was thinking. That should be our goal for tomorrow.”

“For sure.”

I looked down thinking about my brother.

“Do you have any siblings?”

“No, I’m an only child. What about you?”

“I have a younger brother. He’s somewhere but I need to find him.”

“After we get everything ready we can go out and look for him.”

“I appreciate that.”

“Of course.”

I heard a weird shuffling noise outside and took a look. It was a demogorgon. I looked at Kyree and he knew what I was looking at. He walked over to the door and waited for my command to attack. I watched it cross the street heading towards a cat that was sitting there. I shook my head then nodded at him, telling him to go back to sitting. 

We sat there talking until we started seeing light outside. We woke everyone up and started collecting everything that we could. I went outside and tried starting a car but it didn't work. We tried several others but none of them would start which I found weird. We started walking as a group with me and Kyree walking in the front.

Whenever we saw one of the creatures, me or Kyree would take the lead and kill it. Always head shots, I was taught that by my stepdad. 

“I think we should go to Fulton. It’s a small town and it’s easy to get there.”

“I agree. Anyone not like the plan?”

Everyone shook their heads and I spray painted the code onto the middle of the street for Hunter to know where we were going. We kept walking and found the highway. We started walking towards Fulton where we came across some more people. 

“Who are you?”

“We aren’t here to cause issues. We are just trying to create a safe place.”

“How?”

“We are going to a town and are going to barricade it so the creatures can’t get in and so we can protect as many people as we can.”

The group of five looked at each other.

“Can we join you guys?”

“Of course. I’m Tori.”

We all introduced ourselves and started walking together. I saw the look Kyree was giving me.

“What’s wrong?”

“I don’t know. You just accepted strangers into our group.”

“Well that was our plan plus it’ll be easier with a bigger group.”

“I know but you didn’t even question if they were those creatures.”

“They were talking to each other. The creatures cannot talk. Meaning that they are human.”

“Are you sure?”

“I wouldn’t put our lives on the line if I weren’t.”

He nodded his head. We all kept walking for what felt like forever and I noticed that everyone looked tired. 

“Let's stop here and take a break. Drink some water and eat something. Once everyone has energy again, we’ll keep going.”

Everyone was excited and took their bags off of their shoulders. I sat on the hood of a car and watched everyone. Kyree came over to me and sat with me. He handed me a protein bar. 

“Thank you.”

“Of course. What’re you thinking about?”

“Different ways to protect everyone. How are we going to set up this barrier? Are we going to have enough room for everyone?”

“I know. I’m worried too but we’ll make a plan once we get there.”

I nodded my head then noticed the leader of the other group walked up to us.

“Kyree, why don’t we talk about leadership.”

“You’re looking at the wrong person.”

“Then which of the men-”

“You’ve got me f****d up.”

Everyone stopped and started watching. Oscar stared at me.

“I am the leader of my group. I am taking my people to our town. You will step off of your high horse and follow me. I am trying to protect everyone and you wanna talk about leadership? I will not be talked down to by a man with a-”

Kyree got in front of me and shook his head. I took a breath and nodded back at him. 

“A woman that cannot control her emotions is more dangerous than one of these creatures. I won’t follow a woman-”

I pushed Kyree out of my way and held a gun to his head. I did it so fast no one knew what to do.

“Stand down.”

He got on a knee and looked down.

“I’ll follow you.”

I looked up at his group and everyone, including my people, got down as well. I looked up and saw a creature heading our way.

“Everyone pack up fast, they are on their way here. Kyree, hold my back while they go ahead of us.”

He nodded his head and grabbed our bags. I threw mine on and we started walking towards it. I grabbed my crowbar in my left hand with my gun tucked in my pants. I got on top of a car and called for its attention. Kyree stood hidden from it’s sight behind the car. It came charging at me and I cracked it with the crowbar. I hit it twice before Kyree came around and took it down. Once it was dead we looked at each other.

“I wish I knew you before all of this. I bet you never knew you could do this.”

I chuckled.

“I was a normal bruh girl before this. Nothing has changed, believe me.”

We laughed then ran after the group and let them know it was taken care of. We kept walking to Fulton and along the whole way, I spray painted arrows to Fulton so others could find us. Once we got to the town, we could tell that it was deserted. We walked around for a while and collected everything that we could use to make a barricade around the town. We dropped all of our things at a house and got to work. 

We used cars to make a base layer and started making walls. We worked through the whole night and into the morning. I sat down for a second then saw Kyree running to me. He handed me water then smiled.

“What?”

“I think it’s time for everyone to sleep for a while. We have walls up and traps in case someone or something comes in without our knowledge. All of the houses have no electricity but have running water and gas. Why don’t we go pick out our houses?”

I nodded my head and went to the first house I saw. Mariah and Lainey ran up to me before I walked into the house.

“Tori, we just finished setting up yours and Kyree’s house. Come with us.”

They walked us to this big house and smiled proudly.

“Thank you guys but we-”

Kyree stepped on my foot then picked me up.

“Kyree if you don’t-”

He threw me onto the couch laughing. He walked over and shut the front door then helped me get back up. 

“I don’t like you. Why'd you cut me off?”

“They think we are dating. That's why they gave us a house to share. It’s okay, we can sleep in separate rooms.”

I nodded my head then went to the room that was for me. I got undressed and took a quick shower. I changed into a black tank top and some shorts. I went to the kitchen because I smelled food. I sat down and Kyree turned around with two bowls. It had corn and mashed potatoes. We sat down and ate.

“So, you feel better?”

“I do. I’d feel a lot better if my brother was here.”

“I feel you.”

“He’s my best friend.”

“Do you think he’s alive?”

“Yes. We have a bond. I can feel him and he’s worried.”

“I bet he is. We are far from him.”

I nodded my head. I needed a sense of safety. I looked at Kyree while he finished his food. I washed the dishes we made then he went upstairs to shower and change too. I laid in my bed for about an hour trying to sleep but I couldn’t. I finally got up and Kyree was walking towards my room.

“Can’t sleep either?”

I shook my head.

“You want to sleep together?”

I looked down and he chuckled. We walked into my room and got in bed. He pulled me onto his chest and held me while we tried to sleep. He rubbed circles on my shoulder and I fell asleep. I felt his breathing calm down and become steady.

I woke up before him and changed into a different black tank top and black ripped jeans. I threw on steel toed boots and grabbed my gun before heading to the bathroom. I brushed my hair and teeth then went into the kitchen. I made eggs and bacon in tortillas for us to eat really fast before going back to working. Kyree walked down the stairs.

“That smells amazing.”

“I bet. I’d make this all the time before this.”

We sat and ate before we headed out and went back to working. I had Kyree call a meeting at our house so we went back there and prepped. Once everyone was there, I took a breath.

“Okay everyone, we have a lot to talk about. How is the barrier working?”

“Good, we just need another layer of metal and we will be fine. We made a door today so we can come in and out.”

“Okay, how are our supplies?”

“We have enough for everyone for another month. After that we need to get more.”

“Okay. We need a team to go out and get animals for fresh food. Chickens, goats, anything. We also need to grow our own garden so that is a project we need to start immediately.”

Everyone agreed.

“I’ll take a team to go out.”

Everyone looked at me like I was crazy.

“Tori, we just got here. We need a break.”

I nodded my head. I realized they all needed a break from it all.

“Look, we don’t know how long everything is going to last. We need to make sure we are going to be stable for however long we need to be and I’d like to get everything done now so we don’t have to worry about anything later. We all need a break, I get that. But we cannot stop now.”

A few people agreed to come with me. We were going to be a group of five people.

“I’m leaving Kyree in charge. While we are gone, do a supply check and make sure that we have enough.”

Everyone agreed and I said that we’d leave in the morning and come back in five days. Everyone left and I went up to my room and packed for the next few days. I turned around and saw Kyree standing there. 

“What's wrong?”

“I don’t want you to leave. I need to go with you, we work better together.”

“I know that, but you are the only person here I trust and I need you here to keep everything stable.”

He sighed so I walked up to him.

“I’ll be okay. I will come back to you.”

“Promise?”

I smiled at him. He grabbed my hand and stared into my eyes.

“Promise me Tori.”

I nodded my head.

“I promise I will come back to you, Kyree.”

We stared at each other for a moment longer before I noticed him looking at my lips. I smirked then kissed him softly. It quickly got heated and passionate. I finally pulled away and caught my breath.

“We can finish this when I get back.”

He groaned then pushed me against the wall quickly kissing me again. His hands explored my body, making me smirk into our kiss. I pushed him back before it got heated again. He chuckled.

“Let’s go to bed for a while. I have to get up early.”

“I know.”

We went into our bathrooms and showered for the night then I got into bed. I heard him come in and get in with me. I scooted back so he could hold me while we slept and he got the hint. We slept through the whole night peacefully until the clock went off. I groaned as I got up then I went into the closet and started packing for the next few days. 

I put up black ripped jeans and a dark green shirt. I threw on my steel toed boots then walked back out. Kyree had already gotten up and started making breakfast. I went downstairs and packed a little bit of food to get us through the next few days. I sat down and ate breakfast while talking with Kyree.

There was a knock at the door so I knew it was time to go. I got up and gave him a hug but he didn’t want to let me go.

“Ky, I have to go. I will be back.”

“Just another minute, please.”

I held onto him and kissed his cheek before I grabbed my things and walked out. The five of us walked to the gates with everyone behind us to clear some space and so they could lock up behind us. I looked at everyone one last time then smiled.

“We will see you guys in five days.”

I walked out and they shut the door and locked it up. I saw Kyree standing over the wall on the balcony watching us as we walked away. We ran into the wooded area near us and started looking for plants and animals that we could take back right before we got too far. I grabbed a few of the buckets that we brought with us and started putting a few plants into the buckets and had two of the girls run them back to the town. Once they came back with our buckets, we kept walking around picking up plants. 

I came across a few rabbits so I grabbed a few of them and brought them to the gate. I handed them off and told them to make a pin for the animals. We went deeper into the area and found a farm. They had everything that we would need for a long time. I walked through and noticed that there were chickens, cows, horses, pigs, and so much more. 

I saddled up a few of the horses and grabbed the wagons. I started loading up all of the equipment that they had and the chicken wire. A few of the others grabbed the animals and loaded them up in the trailers. I walked up to the house with Mark and we slowly went into the house. We walked through the whole place and there was no one there. We grabbed all of the food and put it in our bags then went back to the stables. 

I went to the horses and got on mine. Once we had everything that we needed, we started heading towards our town. By the time we got there it was really late. We started unloading everything and had help from everyone else. Kyree pulled me to the side.

“I don’t want you going back out there tonight. I just have a really bad feeling.”

“Are you sure?”

“I’m not making this up to keep you here. I was feeling really sick once you left and when you came back, it went away.”

“Fine. We will stay here for the night and head out early in the morning to get an earlier head start.”

He kissed my forehead then I walked over to the group and let them know. We went back to our house and I got in the shower. Once I was done, Kyree was already waiting for me in bed. I crawled into the bed and laid in his arms so he could hold me. He rubbed my head and shoulders to help me sleep.

We slept for a few hours then I had to get up. I put on a pair of plain jeans and a black tank top. I put my boots on and finished getting ready. I had breakfast with Kyree then he walked me to the horses. 

“I still don’t want you to leave.”

“I know you don’t but I have to. We need to make sure we are going to be safe.”

He sighed then kissed me. I got on my horse and made sure everyone was set. We started heading to the wall and were let out. We started trotting down the road and went to the next town over. I got off of my horse and started walking alongside him. 

We walked for a while through the town looking for things to get. I walked into a house and started going through the rooms. I heard shuffling so I started walking slowly towards it. I went into the room and saw a few people sitting in a corner.
