The Day My World Ended
CHAPTER ONE
The Day My World Ended
"Maryann, please. You have to believe me."
I stared at the man standing in front of me, desperately searching his face for the truth.
Daniel Anderson.
My boyfriend of four years. The man who had promised to marry me. The man who had held me in his arms on countless nights and whispered that I was the only woman he would ever love.
Yet here he was, standing beside my best friend.
And Vanessa Reed was wearing my engagement ring.
My heart pounded painfully against my chest.
"Daniel," I whispered, forcing myself to remain calm. "Tell me she's lying."
He looked away.
That single movement shattered the last piece of hope I had left.
"Tell me she's lying!" I screamed.
Vanessa sighed, looking at me with an expression that made my stomach turn.
"Oh, Maryann. Must you always make everything about yourself?"
I turned toward her, unable to believe what I was hearing.
We had been friends since childhood. She knew my secrets, my dreams, and every insecurity I had ever confessed. I had defended her when others spoke badly about her. I had trusted her with everything.
And this was how she repaid me.
"Why?" I asked, tears gathering in my eyes. "What did I ever do to you?"
For a moment, she said nothing.
Then she smiled.
"Because I'm tired of watching you get everything you want."
I felt as though the floor had disappeared beneath my feet.
Daniel finally spoke.
"Maryann, I'm sorry."
I laughed, although there was nothing funny about the situation.
"Sorry? Is that all you have to say after four years?"
He lowered his head.
I wanted him to deny everything. I wanted him to tell me this was some terrible misunderstanding. I wanted the man I loved to look me in the eyes and choose me.
But he didn't.
Instead, Vanessa lifted her hand, deliberately showing me the ring.
"He chose me," she said quietly. "You need to accept that."
I swallowed the lump in my throat.
"Fine."
Both of them looked surprised.
I wiped my tears and straightened my shoulders.
"If he wants you, you can have him. I won't fight for a man who doesn't want me."
I turned toward the door.
Then it opened.
Two police officers walked into the room.
"Miss Maryann Vale?"
I stopped.
"Yes?"
"You're coming with us. We need to question you about missing funds and falsified company documents."
My blood ran cold.
"What? I haven't stolen anything!"
One officer approached me.
"Please cooperate with us."
I looked at Daniel, hoping he would finally say something.
Anything.
He remained silent.
Then I looked at Vanessa.
She was smiling.
And suddenly, I understood.
The cheating wasn't the only betrayal.
Someone had planned to destroy my entire life.
As the officers led me away, I heard Vanessa whisper behind me.
"Goodbye, Maryann."
I didn't look back.
But I made a promise to myself.
One day, I would return.
And when I did, everyone who had helped destroy me would discover that they had made the biggest mistake of their lives.
They thought they had broken me.
They had no idea what they had created.
