The Trail of a Ghost
The High Court of Celvestia stood as a monument to power—black marble walls stretching toward a domed ceiling, illuminated by artificial stars that mimicked the night sky. It was meant to remind all who stood beneath it that the empire was eternal, its rulers untouchable. Kieran Vale knelt at the center of the courtroom, wrists bound in electro-cuffs, his once-immaculate noble robes replaced by a simple gray jumpsuit—the uniform of the condemned. The air smelled of polished steel and judgment. Above him, on an elevated dais, the Council of Elites sat in cold indifference. Ten figures draped in ceremonial robes of crimson and gold, each representing an ancient family that had ruled the empire for centuries. At the center sat Chancellor Renza Kael, her piercing silver eyes locking onto Kieran like a predator studying its prey. “This court convenes for the trial of Kieran Vale, former Lord of House Vale,” Renza’s voice rang through the chamber, carrying the weight of centuries of authority. “You stand accused of treason against the Celvestian Empire. The evidence has been presented, and the Council has reached its verdict.” Kieran clenched his fists, feeling the cold metal of his restraints bite into his skin. He had expected a sham trial, but the speed with which they had condemned him was almost insulting. “Do you deny the charges?” Renza asked, though it was clear the answer did not matter. Kieran lifted his chin. “I do. The accusations against me are fabrications.” His voice was steady, but he could see the smirks of the Council members—this was a game to them, and they had already won. Lord Damaris, a bald man with sharp features, leaned forward. “Fabrications? And yet the evidence shows encrypted transmissions between you and known dissidents, funding diverted from imperial treasuries to subversive factions. Are you saying we manufactured this?” “Yes,” Kieran said without hesitation. “Because you did.” A ripple of amusement passed through the Council. Lord Cassian, a woman known for her ruthlessness, chuckled. “You think yourself clever, boy. Your house was always weak. This empire has no place for those who cannot play the game.” Kieran’s jaw tightened. House Vale had once been a respected name, but his family had never engaged in the ruthless backstabbing that defined the Council’s rule. And now, they had erased him with a stroke of the pen. Renza lifted a hand, silencing the murmurs. “The Council does not need your confession. Your fate has been decided.” She turned to the assembled officials and nobles who had come to witness the downfall of a former peer. “Kieran Vale is hereby stripped of all titles, assets, and rights. He is to be exiled beyond the Outer Rim, his name stricken from all records. From this day forward, he is nothing.” Nothing. The words echoed in Kieran’s mind as two enforcers grabbed him by the arms, dragging him to his feet. He forced himself to remain calm, but his heart pounded with fury. They thought they had won. They thought they had erased him. But they had only freed him. As the enforcers led him toward the transport that would take him to exile, he cast one last look at the Council. He memorized their faces, their expressions of victory. Let them celebrate. One day, he would return. And he would tear their empire apart.
