Chapter 1: The Light Above Green Hollow
Chapter 1: The Lights Above Green Hollow
The village of Green Hollow sat at the edge of the known world.
Beyond its rolling hills stretched forests so ancient that few villagers dared enter them. Most people were content to stay within the safety of their homes, tending fields and raising livestock beneath the protection of the distant mountains.
Arin was not one of those people.
He often found himself staring beyond the horizon, wondering what secrets lay hidden in the wilderness.
"You're daydreaming again."
Arin nearly dropped the bucket he was carrying.
His younger sister, Mira, stood beside the well with her arms crossed.
"No, I wasn't."
"You were looking at the forest."
"Maybe."
Mira rolled her eyes.
"You always look at the forest."
Arin laughed and picked up the bucket.
"Someone has to."
As evening settled over Green Hollow, golden sunlight faded into shades of purple and blue. Villagers lit lanterns outside their homes while children played in the dusty streets.
Everything seemed normal.
Until the sky changed.
A bright silver light appeared above the distant forest.
Then another.
And another.
Soon dozens of glowing streaks crossed the heavens like falling stars.
The entire village stopped to watch.
"What are they?" someone whispered.
No one had an answer.
The lights moved silently across the night sky before disappearing beyond the mountains.
A cold wind swept through the village.
Arin shivered.
For a brief moment, he thought he heard a voice carried by the wind.
A single word.
"Awaken."
The sensation vanished as quickly as it had come.
People slowly returned to their homes, convincing themselves that what they had seen was nothing more than a strange celestial event.
But Arin couldn't shake the feeling that something important had happened.
Something impossible.
That night, sleep refused to come.
Moonlight streamed through his window.
Hours passed.
Then a sudden flash illuminated the room.
Arin sat upright.
Outside, beyond the fields, a beam of silver light rose from the heart of the forest.
It pulsed once.
Twice.
Then vanished.
Arin's heart raced.
No ordinary light could do that.
He grabbed his boots and hurried outside.
The village was silent.
Everyone else remained asleep.
For a moment he considered waking his father.
Instead, curiosity won.
He crossed the fields alone and headed toward the dark line of trees.
As he approached the forest's edge, the air grew colder.
The shadows beneath the branches seemed deeper than usual.
Then he saw it.
A figure standing among the trees.
Tall.
Motionless.
Watching him.
Arin froze.
The stranger wore a dark cloak that concealed most of their face.
Only pale eyes reflected the moonlight.
Neither moved.
Neither spoke.
Finally, the stranger stepped forward.
"Arin of Green Hollow," the figure said.
The voice was calm and unfamiliar.
"I have been searching for you."
Arin felt his stomach tighten.
"Who are you?"
The stranger lowered their hood slightly.
"I am the beginning of a story that will change your world."
A distant roar echoed from deep within the forest.
The ground trembled beneath their feet.
And for the first time in his life, Arin realized that the legends were real.
