As she sipped her morning coffee, Chloe gazed out the window, feeling a mix of excitement and nerves about her first week as an analyst at JODAtech. She had spent years studying and preparing for this moment, and she was determined to make a good impression.
She went into the shower, dressed and left for work.
Her first few days were filled with meetings. Had training sessions, met her colleagues and learned about the company's projects. She got used to the tools and software she'd be using .
As time went by,Chloe got settled into a comfortable routine. She would wake up early, have her coffee as she is reviewing her notes and study before bathing and then heading to work.
In the evenings, she would make dinner but eat out on days she comes later than usual, showers and relax while having a conversation with Madison.
She spends the remaining hours working on her own projects or studying.
Despite the busy schedule, Chloe felt a sense of calm and focus. She was finally doing what she loved, and she was determined to excel.
As the weeks went by, Chloe's hard work began to pay off. She impressed her colleagues with her insights and ideas, and she quickly became an integral part of the team.
One afternoon, after working tediously. Her CEO called her to meet him at the office.
Chloe, I need you to work this weekend on this file I sent you, meet the project deadline. I know it's last-minute, but I expect you to deliver.
I understand the urgency, Mr. Paul, but I've already put in extra hours this week. I'm concerned that working this weekend will lead to burnout.
Burnout? You're just starting your career, Chloe. You need to put in the hours to succeed. If I gave room to that I wouldn't have been here.
I'm willing to work hard, Mr. Paul, but I also need to maintain a healthy work-life balance. Can we discuss other solutions to meet the deadline?,Chloe responded
(sighs) Fine. What do you suggest?
Chloe: (calmly) Well, I've already identified some efficiencies in the project plan. If we adjust the timeline slightly, I can deliver the same quality of work without working this weekend.
(pauses) Okay, let's take a look at your plan. But I expect you to deliver, Chloe. No excuses.
“I understand, Mr. Paul. I'll deliver the project on time and to the best of my abilities.
Monday was here and Chloe had completed the task, presented it to the client and it was flawless.
Chloe walked into Mr. Paul's office, a sense of pride and accomplishment carrying her through the door.
“Good day,Mr. Paul," she said, taking a seat in front of his desk. "I just wanted to follow up with you on the project. The client was thrilled with the results."
Mr. Paul looked up from his computer, his expression neutral. "Good," he said bluntly
"I expected nothing less from you"
Chloe smiled inwardly, knowing she had done an exceptional job.
"I've also received positive feedback from the team," she added. "They were impressed with my problem-solving skills."
Mr. Paul raised an eyebrow, his expression remaining the same."That's nice," he said dryly. "But still we need to stay focused on the present and temper our enthusiasm with a dose of reality. There's still plenty of work to be done."
Chloe felt a hint of disappointment at his lack of enthusiasm, but she refused to let it deter her. She knew she had done an outstanding job, and that's all that mattered.
"Understood, Mr. Paul," she said professionally. "I'll keep working hard to deliver very good results."
Mr. Paul nodded, his expression still neutral. "See that you do," he said, dismissing her.
As Chloe left his office, she couldn't understand the reason to Mr. Paul's refusal to show appreciation. She could not help but think. Either way she felt a sense of satisfaction about her work.
Reaching home after the day's work. She called Madison
“Hey, May! I just got back from my meeting with Mr. Paul after receiving good remarks from the client.”
“How did it go? Did he love your work?
“Yeah, he did. But you know what? He barely even cracked a smile. I was expecting some enthusiasm, but nada.
“Ugh, that's so frustrating! You deserve way more credit than that.
I know, right? But honestly,I know I did an amazing job, and that's all that matters.
That's the right attitude! You can't let his own issues bring you down. Did you tell him how you felt?
Nope, I just smiled and said thanks. I didn't want to give him the satisfaction of knowing he got to me.
“Ha! Good for you, cupcake. You're a rockstar.
Chloe laughs. “Thanks, MayMay. Just talking to you makes me feel better.
I miss you a lot. How are you coping?”
“Anytime, Chloe. That's what sisters are for! Never been this easy now that we all are settling in.
I think I saw Dave,Chloe.
There was silence for a while.
“I didn't mean to bring back memories,I am sorry," Madison said.
“Oh,no.it's fine. I will just go and shower, responded Chloe”,She hangs up.
As the warm water streamed down her body, Chloe's mind suddenly traveled her back to a painful memory she thought she had long buried. It was as if the shower's steam had unlocked a door in her mind, allowing the recollection to escape.
She remembered everything clearly as if it was happening. The pain and anger she felt in that moment came flooding back, making her chest tighten and her breath catch.
She tried to shake off the memory, but it lingered, a painful reminder of her past. She took a deep breath and let the water wash over her, hoping to rinse away the hurt and wake up on the other side.
The next morning, as she was getting ready for work, Chloe received an email from her manager, Mr. Michael."Chloe, I have some news. Can you come see me at 2 PM today to discuss the details?"
Chloe's heart skipped a beat as she read the email. What could it be?
Or she was too excited at her first job and the CEO didn't want her services any more.
