I stared at Gabriel, fear swooshing in at the idea. I shook my head and I could swear he sighed in relief. “It’s settled then,” he said, his eyes switching to Elijah, who was still sleeping. “You are hurt, so I will carry him to the car. I know you want to protect him, but he is safe with me. Okay?” Reluctantly, I nodded, getting from the sofa. He wrapped one of the blankets around the boy, picking him up with ease before turning toward me. He offered me his hand and I took it, allowing him to intertwine his fingers with mine. I opened the door, the cold air hitting my face as we walked outside. Graham was waiting close to the door with two other men I hadn’t seen before and the moment Gabriel stepped out, they all straightened up, looking at him as if waiting for orders. Chris
