The Shattered Bond
The Great Hall of the Crescent Moon Pack smelled of roasted meats, aged pine, and the suffocating perfume of high ranking wolves trying too hard to impress the newly crowned Alpha.
Ava stood near the shadowy alcove by the kitchens, her knuckles white as she gripped the silver serving tray against her chest. As a packless orphan, her place was in the background invisible, silent, and useful only when someone needed their wine refilled.
"More wine, girl," barked Beta Gerald, thrusting his goblet into her space without looking at her.
"Yes, Beta," Ava murmured, keeping her head low as she poured the crimson liquid.
Tonight was the Mate Ceremony, the night Damon Knight formally assumed full command of the territory. But more importantly, it was the night the ancient wolf spirits would align true mates among the young adults of the pack.
At the center of the dais stood Damon. At twenty-four, he was a lethal masterpiece broad shouldered, sharp jawed, and radiating a suffocating Alpha aura that made every unbonded wolf in the room instinctively bow their heads. Beside him sat Lady Freya, the daughter of the Northern High-Pack Leader. Her silk dress practically screamed political convenience. Everyone in the pack knew Damon’s council had orchestrated a match between them to secure the northern borders.
All Damon needed to do was announce their formal betrothal before the moon reached its zenith.
Ava turned to retreat to the kitchens, eager to escape the suffocating weight of the crowd, when the clock on the stone mantle began to chime midnight.
Clang.
A sudden, violent electric shock snapped through Ava’s chest.
She gasped, dropping the silver pitcher. It shattered against the flagstones with a deafening clatter, liquid pooling like fresh blood at her feet. But she barely heard it.
Her blood surged, heating to a boiling point. An overwhelming scent flooded her senses crisp winter air, cedarwood, and crackling ozone. It was intoxicating. It was primal. It was the mate pull.
Ava stumbled back, clutching her sternum, her eyes darting wildly across the hall.
At the exact same moment, on the raised dais, Damon went completely still.
The low hum of chatter died instantly as the new Alpha’s head snapped toward the kitchen alcove. His storm gray eyes locked onto Ava with terrifying intensity. His chest rose and fell in heavy, ragged breaths as the ancient mate bond snapped into place between them, dragging a low, involuntary growl from the back of his throat.
No, Ava thought, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. No, this is a mistake.
Silence descended on the hall like a heavy veil.
Lady Freya’s smile evaporated, her eyes flicking between Damon and the lowly servant girl cowering by the kitchen doors. Whispers rippled through the crowd like wildfire.
"Is that... Ava?"
"The orphan?"
"An Alpha mated to an unranked nobody?"
Damon stepped down from the dais. Every stride was slow, deliberate, and heavy with power. Ava wanted to run, but her legs were rooted to the floor. The mate bond pulled at her soul, whispering promises of safety, belonging, and a love deeper than blood.
He stopped five feet from her. Up close, his gray eyes burned with a chaotic mix of shock, longing, and something far colder.
For a fleeting second, Ava saw a flicker of warmth in his expression. But as Beta Gerald leaned into Damon’s ear and whispered a harsh warning about the Northern alliance, the warmth vanished. Damon’s face hardened into a mask of stone.
He looked at Ava not as his destiny, but as an obstacle. A flaw in his meticulous plan for power.
"Damon..." Ava whispered, the bond urging her to reach for him.
Damon took a sharp step back, severing the physical distance. He raised his voice, allowing his Alpha command to resonate through every stone in the hall, crushing the breath from her lungs.
"I, Alpha Damon Knight of the Crescent Moon Pack," he declared, his voice cold enough to freeze the blood in her veins, "reject you, Ava, as my mate."
The rejection hit her like a physical blow.
Ava gasped as a phantom blade tore through her heart. The mate bond shattered, unleashing a agony so sharp she collapsed to her knees among the broken silver and spilled wine. A ragged sob tore from her throat as her inner wolf wailed in agony, curling into a ball deep inside her soul.
Damon didn't flinch, though a subtle twitch in his jaw betrayed the sting he felt from severing the sacred thread.
"You are a nameless orphan with no pack line, no standing, and no power," Damon continued, his voice void of emotion. "You cannot bear the weight of an Alpha’s mantle, nor can you secure the future of this pack. You will leave the Crescent Moon territory before sunrise. If you step foot on my lands again, you will be executed as a trespasser."
Laughter flared from Lady Freya’s table, echoed by the cold scoffs of the pack nobles.
Ava forced herself to look up through a haze of tears. Damon was already turning his back on her, walking back toward the dais as if she were nothing more than a smudge of dirt he had wiped from his boot.
No, she told herself through the blinding pain. I will not break in front of them.
Digging her nails into her palms until she bled, Ava forced her trembling legs to stand. She wiped the tears from her cheeks with the back of her wrist, holding her chin high despite the agonized thrashing of her spirit.
She didn't utter a word. She didn't beg.
Ava turned and walked out of the Great Hall, leaving behind the only home she had ever known.
An hour later, the torrential downpour matched the storm raging in her chest.
Ava dragged her small canvas bag through the mud at the pack's outer perimeter. Her clothes were soaked through, her body shivering from the freezing rain and the lingering shock of the shattered bond.
She reached the boundary stone the dark granite pillar marking the edge of Crescent Moon territory and the start of the untamed rogue lands.
She stopped, resting her hand against the cold stone, taking one last look back at the distant lights of the pack castle. The pain in her chest was still a dull, throbbing ache, but beneath it, a quiet fire began to ignite. He had called her weak. He had called her nothing.
Suddenly, a sharp, strange sensation fluttered deep within her abdomen.
Ava froze. She pressed her hand flat against her lower stomach.
It was faint almost imperceptible beneath the roar of the rain but it was there. A tiny, second pulse. A soft, rhythmic heartbeat echoing alongside her own, shielded from the Alpha’s rejection by a strange, ancient warmth creeping through her veins.
Ava’s eyes widened in the darkness.
She wasn't leaving alone.
Looking out into the dark, unforgiving expanse of the rogue lands, Ava tightened her grip on her bag and crossed the border line into the night.
