An hour later, Jana walked into Uncle Bill’s office. She stopped at the door to find Bill with the phone to his ear. He waved her in. “How are we supposed to know the difference?” he said into the phone. He waited for the reply, then said, “Leslie, that’s not good enough. And you can tell him I said that. Goodbye.” Bill slammed the phone’s handset onto the base with just enough force to cause it to slide on his desk.
“Remind me to not talk to you on the phone,” Jana said.
“That was the US embassy in Tel Aviv, Leslie Fineman. She’s Deputy Chief of Mission.” Bill rubbed his eyes. “We went to school together. She said the secretary of defense and the ambassador got on a call with the Israelis.” Bill put his hands on his hips. “They say their military escalation is just a war game.”
