Chapter 28 “And a very merry Christmas to you too!” the driver called as I slammed the door. I’d realized just as we’d passed 2 Ferngrove—likely visible from space with its flashing LED Christmas lights and ten-foot tall inflatable snowman—that if anyone were home I couldn’t risk them seeing a car pull into the driveway. Which had then necessitated barking at the driver to stop the car and let me out on the side of the road, earning me even more side-eye. The promised fifty dollar tip, though, ended everything on a positive note. The sunlight now that I’d left the shade of the car was dazzling, though the shadows in my eyes were finally subsiding. Thank goodness there was no snow on the ground. I waited until the Uber was gone, then scrambled off the road. Best to pick the rest of my way
