Chapter 17 I passed through Friday in a sad haze, heading to school, then to the gallery, then back home again in a cycle I hardly noticed. In study hall I discovered that my daily library dates with Ryan were to be no more; my study hall proctor had been informed, by Battison no doubt, that my time would be better spent in actual study hall, not “doing research” in the library. I only saw Ryan once that day—or the back of his head, really, walking ahead of me in the hallway. He entered a classroom, and I thought about going in to say hello, but then the warning bell rang. I gritted my teeth as I forced my feet to walk on towards my next class. I spent the course of the next period lost in daydreams about the bench by the river.
