Chapter 20 I let Ryan know the next day, after my parents had discussed whatever they needed to discuss and the final decision to enroll me at St. Brigid’s had been made. I was at the kitchen table with my laptop doing homework, doing my best to pretend I was invisible as I waited for my mom to let down her guard. She kept glancing up at me as she prepped dinner, making sure I was writing my history essay and not sneaking messages to Ryan—but composing a note to Ryan looked much like writing the essay, and that was what I’d been doing for the past half hour, laboring over the words, rewriting, deleting, and starting again. I’m really sorry about everything, and I wish I’d never dragged you into this though I’m happy you were there with me through it. I hope my dad didn’t yell at you too
