Chapter One: The Wedding Invitation
The rain fell softly against the window as Emily Johnson sat alone in her tiny apartment. A cup of coffee rested untouched on the table beside her while she stared blankly into the distance.
It had been three years.
Three long years since Daniel Williams disappeared from her life without a goodbye.
Three years since he promised, "No matter what happens, Emily, I'll come back for you."
She had believed him.
She had waited.
But he never came.
A sharp knock on the door pulled her out of her thoughts.
"Coming!" she called, wiping the tears from her eyes.
Outside stood a delivery man holding a beautifully wrapped envelope.
"Miss Emily Johnson?"
"Yes."
"This is for you."
She signed the delivery sheet, thanked him, and closed the door.
Curious, she placed the envelope on the table.
The handwriting on it looked familiar.
Her heart skipped.
Slowly, she opened it.
Inside was an elegant white invitation decorated with gold roses.
She unfolded it.
Her smile disappeared instantly.
MR. DANIEL WILLIAMS
requests the honour of your presence at his wedding ceremony...
Emily stopped reading.
"No..." she whispered.
Her hands trembled violently.
"This... this can't be true."
She forced herself to continue.
Bride: Sophia Anderson
Date: Seven Days From Today.
The invitation slipped from her fingers and landed on the floor.
The room suddenly felt too small.
Too quiet.
Too painful.
"So... you finally found someone else."
Tears streamed down her face as memories rushed back.
The day Daniel held her hands beneath the old mango tree.
The day he slipped a simple silver ring onto her finger.
The day he promised, "Even if the whole world stands against us, I will marry only you."
Emily had believed every word.
She had rejected other men.
She had defended him whenever people mocked her for waiting.
Now she understood.
She had been waiting for a man who had already moved on.
Unable to bear the pain, she threw the invitation across the room.
It struck the wall and fell beside an old photo frame.
Emily picked up the frame.
It was a picture of her and Daniel smiling together at the beach.
She traced his face with trembling fingers.
"I hate you," she whispered.
"But why can't I stop loving you?"
Just then...
Her phone vibrated.
Unknown Number.
Emily frowned.
She almost ignored it.
But something inside her urged her to answer.
"Hello?" she said weakly.
A familiar voice came from the other end.
"Emily..."
Her heart stopped.
It was Daniel.
"I know you received the invitation," he said quietly. "Please... don't believe everything you saw. I have only one chance to explain, and if you don't meet me tonight... it will be too late."
Before Emily could respond...
The call suddenly disconnected.
She stared at the phone in disbelief.
What did Daniel mean?
Why was he asking to see her just days before his wedding?
And what could possibly be so important that it had to be said tonight?
