I sat in the kitchen, my eyes fixed on Grandma, as she continued to bake cookies, her hands moving with a practiced ease. But her eyes told a different story - a story of secrets kept and tales untold. "What do you mean by 'unfinished'?" I asked again, my curiosity piqued. Grandma sighed, putting down the cookie scoop. "It's a long story, dear. But I suppose it's time you knew." She took a deep breath and began. "Jack and Emily met during the war, when he was on leave. They fell deeply in love, but their social differences made their relationship... complicated." "Social differences?" I repeated, intrigued. "Yes," Grandma said. "Jack was from a working-class family, while we... well, we were considered upper-class. It was a different time, with different rules." I nodded, starting to understand. "But they loved each other, didn't they?" Grandma smiled wistfully. "Oh, yes. They did. But their love was forbidden, and they knew it. So they kept it a secret, exchanging letters whenever they could." I thought about the letters I'd found, the ones signed with a simple "J". "What happened to them?" I asked, my heart racing with anticipation. Grandma's expression turned somber. "Well, dear, that's the hardest part of the story. You see, Jack went missing in action, and Emily... she was heartbroken." I gasped, feeling a pang of sadness. "Oh, no!" Grandma nodded. "Yes, dear. It was a difficult time for our family. But what's even harder is what happened next." She paused, collecting her thoughts before continuing. "Emily's parents, your great-grandparents, they... they didn't approve of Jack. They wanted Emily to marry someone with a better social standing, someone who could provide for her." I felt a surge of indignation. "That's not fair!" Grandma shook her head. "No, dear, it's not. But that's how it was
