Chapter 1 : THE SILENT ROOM
I remember the first time I felt truly alone not just physically, but deep down in my bones, like I was living inside a glass box, invisible to the world around me. It didn’t happen overnight. No, it was slow, like the creeping chill of dusk settling in after a long, bright day.
It started with small things, missing calls I didn’t have the energy to answer, invitations I declined because talking felt like climbing a mountain. Friends’ voices became echoes I barely recognized, and soon enough, even my own voice felt distant, like a whisper lost in a crowded room.
One night, lying awake in the dark, the silence was so loud it pressed against my ears. My thoughts ran wild, each one louder than the last: “You’re different. You don’t belong here". "Nobody really cares". I twisted beneath the covers, trying to shake the heaviness in my chest. But it was there, a shadow that stretched longer with every breath I took.I told myself it was easier this way to shut everyone out, to build walls higher than my fear. Yet in the quiet, loneliness became a constant companion. It whispered lies that felt like truth, convincing me I was too broken to be loved.
Sometimes I blamed others, the friends who stopped asking how I was, the family who didn’t see past my smile, the world that seemed too busy to notice. But the truth was far harsher: I blamed myself the most. For hiding. For not fighting harder. For giving up.
I remember staring at my phone for hours, fingers hovering over the screen, afraid to reach out, but desperate for connection. What if they don’t care? What if they think I’m weak? The fear paralyzed me, locking me deeper inside my silence.
But somewhere in the darkness, a quiet voice began to stir a whisper soft but persistent, like a candle flickering against the night. It told me, “You are not alone. This pain is not your prison.” It was the first crack in my invisible walls.
That night, with tear-streaked cheeks, I whispered a prayer not for everything to be perfect, but for the strength to keep going. For the courage to open the door to that silent room and let in some light.
Reflection
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18
This verse became my anchor in the storm. It reminded me that even in my darkest moments, I was not forgotten. There was a hope waiting for me, if only I was brave enough to reach out.
Voices I remember:
*“You don’t have to be strong all the time. It’s okay to ask for help.” a friend’s words that felt like a lifeline.
“God meets us in our mess, not just in our victories.” words that shifted something inside me.
Closing thought:
Loneliness feels like a prison, but it’s not a life sentence. Healing begins when we let someone anyone in, even if it’s just a whisper of hope.
