Unhappy Anniversary
Emma The pain was unlike anything I’d ever experienced as I froze in shock, listening to the loud moans coming from our room. “Oh my God! Yes, baby! Keep doing that, you’re so much better than her!” Were the words that flowed out of my husband’s mouth that morning. Slowly, my excitement completely faded away. We’d been married for four years so I could not have mistaken Adam’s voice, but still, I couldn’t believe it was Adam. There was no way it could be him, he’d gone out of town on business and his flight did not arrive for another two hours, at least that’s what he told me. Besides, Adam would never cheat on me. As I marched closer to the bedroom door, the thing I feared was becoming more and more real. About a week ago, I received an anonymous message that Adam was having extramarital affairs, but never believed it. However, the closer I got, the clearer his voice was. Today was our fourth anniversary and I had the best gift for him. After many unfortunate miscarriages, I was finally pregnant. I wanted to reveal my pregnancy as a surprise to him, but I got one from Adam instead. I stood outside the door for some minutes, looking at the scattered clothes across the door entrance. There was no denying it anymore, these were the same clothes I’d gifted Adam before his flight. Heaving a deep breath, I strode into the room, my feet trembling with each step I took, and caught Adam’s frail body on our marital bed, moving intensely with a woman underneath him. Her face was partly covered, but when I saw that hair, I gasped in shock. I didn’t want to believe it was who I thought it was, but there was no denying it - it was my best friend, Sloan. They were so immersed that they didn’t even notice me until a soft gasp escaped my lips. Adam was the first one to notice me. He immediately climbed off her and covered himself with the bedspread, his voice trembling as he spoke “E-Emma, what are you doing here?” Seeing him now, I could not hold back my tears anymore as they rolled down my cheeks, my words stuck in my throat. I felt stupid and disappointed that I’d been wrong about the kind of man Adam was, even when I’d been warned. Adam was not just having extramarital affairs, he was having it with my best friend. Without a word, my gaze drifted to Sloan but in her eyes, there were no regrets, just pure malice. “Emma, it’s not what it looks like,” Adam said, getting off the bed and approaching me, but I couldn’t look him in the eyes and shifted my gaze back to the bed. This time, Sloan was gone. She was no longer on the bed and my brows furrowed in confusion, but before I could figure out what was going on, I felt a sudden blow to my head and my vision faded into darkness. The last thing I heard as I slowly passed out was Sloan’s voice, “Enough talk, it’s time she gets what she deserves.” - I slowly blinked my eyes open and immediately panicked when I saw Sloan squatting right in front of me. “Oh good, you’re awake,” she said and stood with a sinister grin. I tried to move but that was when I noticed that I had no power to, as my arms and legs were bound to a chair with a thick rope. Slowly, the memory returned. That’s right, I caught Adam and her in bed. A tear rolled down my face, I had trusted both of them too much and never imagined that I could be betrayed by both of them. “Why are you doing this, Sloan? Why am I tied in this chair when I caught you cheating with my husband?” I sobbed, looking at her. She scoffed, “You really think he’s yours, pathetic. Just relax and watch,” Sloan mumbled, and just then the door opened and Adam walked in purposefully. Seeing him, I breathed a sigh of relief, knowing he was going to end this nonsense, whatever it was. “Adam! Thank goodness! You’re here, I don’t know what’s gotten over Sloan, but just untie me and we can talk about what happened back there,” I said hastily, but Adam just ignored me and walked straight to Sloan. “Adam?” I called, staring at him in confusion as he approached her and placed a kiss directly on her lips. “What’s going on?” I asked, even more confused. “Isn’t it obvious? He’s not here for you,” Sloan replied, laughing manically. “You’re shocked? You didn’t think Adam loved you now, did you?” She asked with a sinister smirk. At that moment, it all made sense. Of course, they’d been dating all along. Realizing how deep their betrayal had gone, a tear rolled down my face. “Adam only married you, because I asked him to. Everything that has happened since the first time you two met till your marriage, I’ve been the one orchestrating it.” I was shocked by her words and shifted my gaze to Adam. “Is this true?” I asked to no reply and swallowed hard. The truth they said was bitter, but this burned deep in my stomach. “Why?” I asked, breaking into tears. “Do you know how sick I am of you? It wasn’t enough that you had the perfect life, but he willed you everything and just threw me to the curb. You’re just like him, you never for once considered how someone else was feeling, but that ends now. I’m not going to let you have what is originally mine even if that means I destroy you so that I can inherit everything.” Sloan yelled, but her words were just as confusing as the reason why I was tied up in this chair. “What the hell are you talking about?” I asked with confusion. She was busy going on about an inheritance when I had none. The only thing I inherited from my parents were debts, which I managed to pay off when I got married to Adam. Biting her lip, she smirked mischievously, “You don’t know do you?” “Of course, the old man didn’t tell you. We’re sisters Sloan,” As soon as those words fell, my eyes widened in shock. “Sisters?” I repeated in disbelief. “Your mother was my father’s mistress, but to avoid a scandal and stain on his name, he made your mother give you up for adoption. He managed to keep it hidden from everyone including me, but a few years ago, I learned who he was passing his will to, and it wasn’t me. Take one guess who it was?” She asked leaving me even more stunned. “Emma Robert, my dearest best friend or should I say Emma Gunter, my father’s bastard child, my step-sister,” Sloan said with disdain. “No way,” I shook my head in disbelief. How come I didn’t know any of this? “I wish it wasn’t true either, but the old man willed his entire fortune to you and left me his rightful heir with nothing!” She yelled “Your marriage with Andrew just earned you the first half of the will and the second half is going to be willed down to you once you give birth.” “That’s a little unfair, don’t you think?” She added, but at this time I was still processing everything, I didn’t even know what to say. “That is why I planned all of this with Adam. I told him to marry you so that he could be in control of your inheritance. This way, I’d be able to take back everything that was rightfully mine and ruin you.” Amid the confusion, I shifted my gaze to Adam, still hoping this wasn’t true. “I’m pregnant Adam,” I said in tears and Sloan burst out laughing. “You’re so naive. How do you think all your miscarriages happened?” She smirked maliciously. Her words caught me by surprise, and I quickly shifted my gaze back to her, “What are you talking about?” “Are you going to tell her Adam, or should I?” Sloan asked. “Tell me what?” I asked, my heart racing. “Adam and I are responsible for all your miscarriages. He’s been silently drugging you all this while, certainly, he doesn’t care about having a child with you.” She said with a plain look on her face. “I mean I can’t watch you carrying my man’s child,” she shrugged. I immediately broke into tears and shifted my gaze back to Adam. His eyes flashed with a solemn regret that made me confirm what Sloan said was true. “S-so what are you planning to do with me?” I stuttered and she just turned and strode away wordlessly towards a cabinet. “Are you really pregnant?” Adam’s words filtered into my ears. I nodded in response, even though my heart was breaking. “Don’t patronize her, Adam,” Sloan said, and I shifted my gaze to see a gun pointed at me. I immediately panicked, “You don’t have to do this Sloan, we can talk about it,” I begged and Adam stepped forward with a sense of urgency. “Drop the gun Sloan,” he said approaching her. “Why? This b***h deserves to die! We can finally have everything to ourselves and be together Adam,” “Not this way,” Adam replied, stepping closer to her. He tactically grabbed the gun and they started struggling. Trembling in fear, I closed my eyes. I didn’t want to die now, and just then. Bang! A shot went off.
