When The Sea Remembers
The sea remembers everything. The laughter of sailors, the hymns of the drowned, the promises whispered into its salt-kissed wind — all of it drifts beneath its surface like forgotten dreams. And somewhere within those dreams, I was born again. The first thing I felt was cold. Not the kind that numbs the skin — the kind that crawls into your bones, whispering of centuries spent sleeping beneath the tide. When I opened my eyes, the moon hung low over the water, its reflection rippling like silver glass. My body ached, unfamiliar and heavy. My tail — the once-luminous shimmer of my existence — was gone. In its place were two trembling legs, pale and strange. The ocean roared behind me, waves crashing as though calling me home. But the spell was done. My promise had been summoned. I was bound once more to the world above. I stumbled forward through the wet sand, each step tearing through the ghost of what I used to be. My heart throbbed with the memory of a voice — his voice — calling my name in another lifetime. A name I had buried long ago. “Lira,” the wind whispered. That was me. Once. I looked down at my hands. They were smooth, human. No trace of scales, no shimmer of the sea. The pendant around my neck still glowed faintly — a single droplet of crystal water, captured from the depths of my kingdom before I made my vow. It pulsed softly, like a heartbeat, reminding me of the promise that bound my soul. Find him. Remember. And this time, do not let the sea take him first. Lightning cracked far out over the horizon, painting the world in silver and shadow. Beyond the cliffs, faint lights shimmered — the small fires of a distant village. I pulled the torn cloak tighter around me, a relic I had found washed ashore beside me. It smelled faintly of seaweed and old dreams. Each step toward the village echoed with uncertainty. The night air bit at my skin, the sound of waves faded, and the silence of the world above pressed in. I could almost hear my heartbeat — slow, steady, alien. Then I saw him. He stood at the edge of the cliffs, a lone figure silhouetted against the storm-lit sea. Tall, dark hair whipped by the wind, his stance steady as though the storm itself bowed to him. Something in me stirred — not memory exactly, but ache. When he turned, the light caught his face. Those eyes… I had seen them before, though centuries stood between us. They had looked at me once beneath the sea’s surface, filled with wonder and fear. They had loved me — and then betrayed me. Now, they looked at me without recognition. He took a step closer, hesitant. “Are you hurt?” His voice carried through the rain, deep and warm, the same rhythm that once haunted my dreams. I couldn’t speak. My throat tightened, the words trapped between lifetimes. He offered me his hand, and when our fingers touched, the pendant around my neck flared — soft, blue light pulsing like a heartbeat. He didn’t notice. But the sea did. The wind rose sharply, waves slamming against the rocks below. I could almost feel its fury, its warning — Do not forget why you returned. I forced a small smile. “I… I lost my way.” He nodded, studying me, his expression softening. “You shouldn’t be out here. Storm’s coming.” As he led me toward the faint lights of the village, I glanced once more at the sea. Its waves twisted violently, as if trying to claw me back. The promise I made centuries ago echoed in my mind — a vow of love, sealed with betrayal, and a curse born from tears. I had returned not only to find him… but to remember the truth of what tore us apart. And when I did, either he would live — or I would return to the sea forever. The wind howled, scattering droplets like shattered glass. Behind us, the waves whispered my name again — Lira. But I did not look back. Not yet.
