Chapter 1
The Deal That Changes Everything
Aria Monteverde hated elevators in glass buildings.
They made her feel exposed—like every insecurity, every crack in her armor, was visible to the city below. Forty-eight floors up, her palms were damp, her jaw tight, her spine straight as steel.
She refused to look nervous.
The elevator doors slid open to reveal Vale Global’s executive floor—sleek marble, muted gold accents, and silence so heavy it pressed against her ribs.
A woman in a tailored black suit barely glanced up.
“Mr. Vale is expecting you.”
That alone sent a shiver through Aria’s spine.
Sebastian Vale didn’t expect people. He summoned them.
The doors to his office were massive, dark wood, intimidating by design. Aria knocked once before entering.
And then she saw him.
Sebastian Vale stood near the windows, city stretching endlessly behind him. Tall. Broad shoulders beneath a perfectly fitted suit. His posture was relaxed, but everything about him radiated control.
He turned slowly.
Dark eyes met hers—and lingered.
Not polite.
Not professional.
Evaluating.
“You’re late,” he said calmly.
“I’m exactly on time,” Aria replied, lifting her chin. “Your assistant changed the meeting last minute.”
The corner of his mouth curved—not quite a smile.
Interesting.
Most people apologized.
She challenged.
“Sit,” Sebastian said, gesturing to the chair across from his desk.
Aria didn’t move immediately. A silent rebellion. Then she sat—graceful, deliberate.
He took his seat, folding his hands.
“You want funding.”
“I want a partnership,” she corrected.
His gaze dropped briefly—to her lips, her throat—then returned to her eyes.
“You don’t dictate terms in my office.”
A spark ignited in her chest.
“Then maybe I’m in the wrong place.”
For the first time, Sebastian Vale leaned back—and smiled fully.
Dangerous. Slow. Certain.
“Oh no,” he said quietly.
“You’re exactly where you belong.”
Aria felt it then—deep, instinctive, undeniable.
This man would ruin her.
And worse—
Part of her wanted to let him.
