Vance grabbed onto her hand just as she was about to slide into the open car, "Selene," he called again.
Selene tugged in an attempt to free her hand from his grasp but he refused to let go. She had heard him calling, if he had actually thought she was going to wait he must be crazy.
"Let me go!" She yelled but she could tell he had no intention of doing so, his grip even tightened and he held the open door.
"Selene, please wait. I am not letting go of your hand until you talk to me." Vance called out and Selene lost it.
"Are you crazy? How dare you?" She was so angry she could not think straight, couldn't even think of the words she wanted to say. She knew she was speaking but she couldn't quite follow the words coming out of her own mouth.
"I am so sorry, I know I should not be doing this but I can't let you leave like this." He said and his grip on her car door tightened.
Selene felt herself swell up with anger, she could not comprehend this. It was like a bad joke that everybody except her found funny. It was bad enough that he already knew who she was the first time they met, which she blames on no one else but her father. She would deal with her father later but right now, she needed to get out of here.
As the words had fallen out of his father's mouth, Selene had refused to believe her ears but the guilty look on Vance's face was more than enough confirmation. She had then glanced at her father and he had the same guilty expression.
Selene had not known what to think, she still didn't know what to think. It didn't help that the rest of the people on the table couldn't make eye contact with her, they knew, they had all known.
She couldn't comprehend how she had been this oblivious. How was it possible to be marked and be unaware? It was sad that nobody thought to mention it to her, not even her father and every single one had known.
"How long?" She suddenly muttered.
"How long what?" He asked.
"Don't play dumb with me, it won't exactly work in your favor." She yelled. From where she was standing she could see how uncomfortable the guards were as they stood around at the scene of the crime but she did not care, she could not afford to be courteous, they had not been to her.
"Since the first night," He answered, looking at his feet and he spoke. Selene's head spun. He was kidding right, that was not how marking was, right?
"If you're joking, it is not a very funny joke." She had never heard of marking happening so early on; besides, it was so rare most people didn't know much about it.
"I wish I was," he muttered, his grip on her hand was still tight, it was the only reason she had not smacked him across the face yet.
"Unmark me this instant!"
