CHAPTER ONE
"Is that a joke?" Selene yelled at her father in a room filled with nobles from different important families while hitting her hand on the round table but she didn't care this was a matter she could not dare to be calm about.
"Selene," he called softly, trying to remind her of her manners but Selene wasn't having any of it.
"Is that a joke?" She repeated.
Her father sighed, his daughter has always been a little fierce and he had totally expected her reaction but it still didn't make it easier. "No, Selene." He muttered firmly. He hated what he had to do but this was better for her, he wasn't getting any younger and the last thing he wanted to leave her with was a never-ending war.
She chuckled, "I think it is because you know sure as hell that that is never going to happen…"
"Selene, language." Her father interrupted but she didn't pause.
"Have you all forgotten what we suffered at their hands?" She asked the room without a moment's pause, turning to her father, "Have you forgotten what they did to mother? How could you even consider such a thing?" She stared at her father with accusation in her eyes.
"It's not up for discussion Selene." Her father said, his pitch a little higher than normal and firm too.
"What?" She looked around the room. "You guys are fine with this?" The disgust on her face was clear as day.
Her father sighed, his daughter tended to throw caution to the wind whenever she got emotional. If it wasn't a serious situation he would have laughed, she just referred to the nobles as you guys, this was a rare sight.
Some would say he spoiled her but he liked to believe he gave her the freedom to make decisions on her own and decide for herself what was right and/or wrong. To be able to stand for herself no matter the circumstances and here it was biting him in the ass, at least that's what the nobles were thinking.
Selene glared daggers at everybody in the room, if her eyes could be used as a weapon she was certain they would all be dead. She wasn't just angry, she felt betrayed. How could they even consider this?
They avoided her gaze and she turned to face her father. He must have known she would never agree to this, so she was confused as to why he would even suggest it, and the worst part was it wasn't a suggestion.
She shook her head, "I can't believe this. It's not going to happen. Not in a million years." Selene yelled and stormed out, tumbling her chair over as she was walked out of the room.
Nobody stopped her and nobody said another word until the door closed with a loud bang. They gave it a couple of seconds and then returned to matters at hand like the Primus daughter had not just caused a commotion.
Selene fled to her car, feeling tears burn at the sides of her eyes. She wasn't the crying type, never have been but sometimes when she got really emotional, she tended to lose control.
While in the car she took a deep breath as she tried to calm herself down. There was definitely something wrong with all of them, that they would even consider such an atrocity, to join hands with the Blackwood. Worst of all, they wanted her to be proof of the union, it was like a bad joke.
She scoffed and shook her head. She wasn't going to think about this anymore, she was going to clear her head, and hopefully by the time she was back her father and his nobles would see how dumb their idea was. Things would be back to normal where they wanted revenge as much as she did.
Picking up a hairband, she pulled her hair upward and tied it into a ponytail. She then started the car and drove off with no destination in mind. After driving around for hours, she soon found herself in her favorite club.
"On the rocks," she ordered. She wasn't really a drinker but on nights like this, she tended to indulge and even though it would take dozens of bottles to get her even slightly tipsy, she liked to think she enjoyed the process.
By the fifteenth glass, the bartender looked scared every time he studied her. She chuckled and figured it was time to give it a rest, she wasn't really trying to get drunk and the last time she wanted to burst her bladder, that would leave a nasty mess.
She chugged the sixteenth glass and paid her bills, leaving a very generous tip. The music was booming and the party had finally gotten started, she had shown up just as the club opened where it had been scanty and just a few people were on the dance floor but now, the party was booming.
She shook her head to the music and she made her way to the crowd, moving her hips to the rhythm as she tried to drown everything out but the music. She slithered through the sweaty bodies until she found a good spot.
She kept her eyes closed and hoped they would take the hint that she wanted to be alone. Of course, they didn't and they tried to talk to her but she ignored them. One even went as far as to touch her inappropriately.
She caught his wrist just as his hand was sliding down her rear, opened her eyes to make eye contact with the unlucky soul who was smirking at her in such a creepy way that it made her skin crawl and with all her strength she squeezed.
She watched in pleasure as his face changed from a creepy smirk to surprise and then pain. He tried to smack her but she tightened her grip even more and he just froze, his eyes widened more than it was humanly possible. She smirked enjoying his look of fear and let go of his hand, he fled so fast she lost him in the manner of seconds.
"That was quite the show," a voice said just inches from her neck interrupting her chuckle. Selene gasped and turned around so fast, she whipped him with her hair. "Ugh!" He muttered, grimacing as he got a mouth full of hair.
Selene felt instant anger, not at the intruder who had just made his way into her personal space but at herself for not noticing until he spoke. "What the heck? Who are you?" She spoke in a rush.
Even though the music was ridiculously loud, there was no need for either of them to tell as they could hear each other perfectly.
"I don't think that's the first thing you say to someone after swiping your hair all over their face." He replied, smirking at her. Selene didn't like the way he stared at her, it made her feel warm.
She folded her arms and scoffed, "That wouldn't have happened if you had not been too close for comfort." She was annoyed, how distracted had she been to not notice the presence of another vampire?
"Are you saying I make you uncomfortable?" He asked, taking a step forward. Selene first thought was to take a step back but there was no way in hell she was going to take a step back for a random dude with his head up his ass.
"Don't flatter yourself, it was unexpected and like you would have noticed, I was quite um distracted." She squeezed her arms around herself tighter, feeling even warmer. What the hell was wrong with her?
"I noticed," he smiled, a full-on smile with teeth and everything. Selene would have sworn someone smacked her as her slow breathing heart picked up the pace. If she thought he was handsome before, he just tripled that thought.
"Who are you?" She threw at him as she tried to cleanse off the thought of covering his mouth with hers.
"Ugh!" He gasped rolling his eyes and Selene felt irritated. "Vance," he announced before she could slap him with her words.
"Just Vance?" She interrogated him.
"Ah, are you curious?" He asked and she could see the beginning of a smirk. "But this is the part where you tell me your name."
Now, it was her turn to roll her eyes. "You walked up to me, remember? This is the part where I walk away." She didn't give him a chance to respond but rather turned on her heels as she made to walk away. The last place she wanted to be was in the company of another vampire.
Selene's eyes widened almost as simultaneously as she stopped in her tracks. She felt his hand on hers and she would remember it as an electric current coursing through her skin.
She turned around with daggers in her eyes, "You never learn, do you?" She growled, referring to the incident where she had almost crushed the young man's hand.
"I like to make my own mistakes," he winked and Selene found that his attitude annoyed her, it was like he was well aware of the fact that his presence wasn't completely unnoticed by her.
