CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

The company soon appeared in view and she drove up to it. She carefully made her way to the parking lot and put off the engine. She groaned as she thought that the manager would come running as soon as he saw her. She picked her laptop and quickly made her way to the private elevator that her father often used whenever he came to the company which was almost never, recently. It was located at the parking lot, close to the back entrance of the company that nobody used except the security guards. She stealthily made her way to the elevator. She stuck the card in and immediately started running, opening its doors to her as she fled in. Nobody had been at the parking lot at the time she came but that didn't matter, the manager knew she was here as soon as her car drove in, she was expecting him to come knocking on the door. This was one of the reasons she hated coming to the company. Besides, the company wasn't her business, her father was. She was his personal assistant, not the company's. She arranged meetings, checked out documents, and all that work s**t. Sometimes she even went as far as to represent her father if it was that important, other times the manager often went in his stead. The elevator opened, it was the topmost floor. She walked straight into the pathway with the laptop close to her chest and soon arrived at the door. She unlocked it with her card. The door opened to reveal the biggest room in the building. Her father's office alone took up the entire floor. There was no office for her as it was rare for both her and her father to be at the company at the same time. She just used his office whenever she was around. She wasn't complaining, aside from having the best view, she could access it without interacting with anyone. It was super convenient. She walked to the huge chair that was behind the equally huge mahogany table. At least, she thought it was mahogany. The lady that had designed the office had not stopped yapping about how great the table was. Years later and Selene still thought it was a lump of wood. She carefully placed her personal computer before turning to face the other side of the table. There was a huge window directly behind the seat with a great view that Selene found herself staring at for a couple of seconds before she sat down with a loud plop. She spun the seat around before it made a stop and she opened the closed laptop. There was a computer in the office but all the documents she needed were on the laptop, she usually wasn't able to use something she wasn't familiar with. She cracked her fingers and got to work. It was a lot, emails she had to read, reply and to schedules. There were also documents she had to review. Two days off work turned out to be a lot. She worked for almost three hours straight before she raised her head from the laptop. She needed a break. She stood to her feet and stretched her arms, they cracked immediately. She groaned in satisfaction. She was surprised she had been uninterrupted for this long. She was quite certain the manager knew she was around. The security would have alerted him. She was barely done with the thought when she heard a knock. "f**k!" She muttered, realizing she had jinxed herself. She didn't respond, hoping he would take the hint and go away. He didn't, rather he turned the knob. Selene frowned instantly as she also realized that she forgot to lock the door. "I am so sorry," he rushed at her as he pushed the door open and walked in. "I didn't realize it was unlocked." Selene raised a brow but she knew he wasn't completely lying, normally she locked the door. "Whatever, Mr. Bennett. How can I help you?" "Well, um you see I have been trying to reach out to you and the CEO but for some reason, I haven't been able to." Mr. Bennett started to say as he slowly walked further into the office. "Is there a special reason you would need either of our attention or rather both?" She asked bluntly. She wasn't in a good mood, she wasn't about to take it easy on anyone. "Well, you see…" Mr. Bennett started to explain again but she didn't let him finish. "Is it something you can't handle by yourself, Mr. Bennett?" She asked sternly, glaring at him. Her gaze was unwavering. Mr. Bennett squirmed under her gaze and seemed to appear smaller. He was a petite man that had more around his waist than anywhere else. He was also balding and looked to be in his late forties. He had been the manager of this particular company for over a decade and was quite familiar with the system. "No," he muttered glumly, his past energy completely deflated. "Is that all then?" She asked with the same stern tone. "Yes," he replied and slowly began to withdraw backward. "Alright then, I would like to be left alone for the rest of the day. If it is an emergency, I would gladly come to your aid but we both know you are pretty good at what you do so, I expect that you can handle anything that is tossed at you without me nor my father intervening." Selene said with a raised brow, she was saying a little too much but there was a probability that this was going to be her new base, she needed to be able to work in peace. Mr. Bennett also liked to please, this was a way to boost his ego. Mr. Bennett liked praises. "Yes, " he repeated a little forcefully but Selene could see the start of a smile at the corner of his lips and she knew she had won. "Well then, I guess I can return to work. If you would excuse me." She said and bent her head as she returned her attention to her laptop. Mr. Bennett bowed and left, she didn't waste any time but was by the door in seconds. She locked it this time, no way was she going to let herself get interrupted again.
