CHAPTER SIXTY-FOUR

520 Words
"How did it go?" Kova asked, breaking the unnerving silence. Vance didn't answer immediately but stared at every one of them intensely before he opened his mouth. "Not great," he said with a solemn face. "What do you mean not great? You succeeded in marking the woman what more proof do you want that she actually gives two f***s about you?" De Vile blurted out and they all glared at him. Vance turned to his father, "Quit it, dad! You're the reason we are in the mess. After all, you of all people should know marking doesn't mean squat, if it did, maybe your bed wouldn't be so lonely." Vance watch his father swell, decades later and his mother was still a very delicate subject he didn't like to talk about. Vance hated it when he had to bring his mother into conversations like this but it was the only way to make his father listen. Besides, he was aiming for payback. He braced himself for a comeback even though he doubted any would come from De Vile. Vance's mother was one thing De Vile had no option but to admit their breakup was solely his fault. It was the one thing that was glaring even at age three Vance had known. "Where is she?" Kova asked. Vance was so relieved by the distraction that the words were barely out of Kova's mouth when he replied. "She left." Kova frowned, "Left?" "Yeah, she left. Drove off with her car." "Did she say where she was going?" Vance nearly rolled his eyes, either Selene's father was underestimating her or Kova was overestimating his significance in Selene's life. "You know there is no way in hell she would have told me." He replied, staring at Kova as if daring him to say otherwise. "You shouldn't have let her leave," Kova muttered. Vance glared at him, "You make it sound like I could have stopped her. You couldn't even stop her from leaving this room." Vance glanced at everybody in the room. They were expecting too much from him. All he really was, was some random dude in her life who somehow was able to mark her, nothing more. He didn't have a say in her life, he knew that more than anyone. Kova threw his face away and Vance realized that the comment was not meant for him, Kova was saying his own thoughts out loud. Vance instantly felt sorry for him, Kova would definitely receive a lot of blame from Selene. He doubted she would forgive him and he knew Kova knew that making amends with Selene would be tough. Kova had not even embarked on it yet and he already looked older than when Vance first stepped into the room. "I suggest increasing our security, at least for the meantime." Gualterio suddenly said and Vance saw the air lightened as they moved to a subject they could actually control. "Would that make any impact?" A Noble asked. "Increasing security isn't as easy as you make it sound. The last thing we need to do is get vampires agitated over nothing."
