Daisy "Is this... Daisy Basile" said an unfamiliar voice on the phone. I took a breath as I had a feeling what this call was about. I have yet to hear from my mother in over a month, which has gotten me worried a bit, but I had a feeling that she was already gone. "Yes, sorry. May I ask who is calling me? I am kinda at work at the moment" I said in a quiet tone as I was in my office doing some paperwork my boss gave me at the last minute to file and organize. There was noise in the background of the phone call, and I knew that they must be out in the streets or in a loud place. "My apology, my name is Kane. I am... Well, I am your Stepfather" he says. I stopped working on what I was doing, then quickly stood up from my desk in disbelief, "My... My stepfather...you're saying that... my mother remarried?!" I shouted, my voice cracked at the news, but that was when the 8-ball went into 'pocket' when he spoke again. "I am sorry, but unfortunately...your mother Isabella, passed away…" my breath halted as I took the news that was just given, I tilted my head up to look at the ceiling and then sighed over the phone. "She overdosed, didn't she..." I said quietly when he didn't say anything, I just felt his nod over the phone. "I kinda figured she did since she never answered her phone. Rather, I texted or called, it's whatever, I had a feeling she was gone. I have already prepared for it anyway," I said, with a nonchalant tone. The slight gasp I heard from this stranger's lips was slightly interesting, but I didn't pay any mind to it. "Are you saying you do not care that your mother died?" he asked in a serious tone like he was trying to intimidate me, but it didn't work at all. "I grew up wondering if she was going to die or not every time she disappeared, Kane, so sorry if I sound NOT surprised or feel horrible that my mother is dead. I am used to the fact that she has been doing drugs throughout my childhood," I said over the phone, then I hung up on him before he could respond. I set my phone down on my desk, then picked up some of the paperwork that fell onto the ground. When I stood up quickly, once everything was picked up, I went back to work. After I was done for the night, I felt bad about how I acted towards this Kane person, so I decided to call the number back to see if he answered. "Hello, this is Kane Salvatore. May I ask who is calling," he said in a gentle voice. I instantly felt weak in the knees, but I kept my composure and cleared my throat before I spoke. "It's me, Daisy... You called me earlier about my mother. I just wanted to apologize for how I acted towards you on the phone," I said in a genuine tone, as I did feel bad for snapping the way I did. There was a brief silence between the two of us, so I decided to break it, but he beat me to it. "It is alright, I took it as your moment of shock, so it is fine. Did your mother ever tell you what your family does for a living at all by any chance" he asked. I haven't thought about it to be frank, so I thought for a moment. Before I knew it, my lips moved on their own while I thought out loud, "All I have ever known is that we sell goods at the ports and trade stuff" When I said those words out loud, I covered my mouth. "Your family did a lot more than just sell and trade Daisy. Your Mother and Father, before they passed away, were both the most feared Mafia bosses in the state. They even had my family on the ropes," he said. My mouth opened wide when I heard that. "Can you give me a moment, to wrap my head around all of this please," I said to him, then when he said 'Sure' I hung up, then left my office, my hand in my hair trying to get a hold of my thoughts. That's when my work bestie Bree came up to me in her normal happy-go-lucky self. "Come on Daisy, you need to live a little bit," Bree said in her giddy-up tone of hers. I just shook my head in disbelief, then giggled towards her as she tried to get me to stay for the after-party at work. She has been trying to get me to stay for the after-parties at work, but I always decline, because if I do not go home at a certain hour, the bodyguards will come searching and destroy everything that they touch. "I wish I could, I do, Bree, but I have to be home before a search party comes looking for me," I tell her in a sweet tone to mask the fact that I just don't do parties. She gave me the look of 'Bullshit' but then let it slide, as she just smiles then hugs me goodbye. When she let go of me, I walked off to the elevator to go to the employee garage. My car was parked on the 3rd floor of the parking garage. When I arrived on the 3rd floor, I felt like I was being followed. I gripped my purse tightly to myself, and that is when I felt a presence I had not felt before. Like someone who has been a hunter longing for their prey to arrive at the mince of the hunt. I reached into my pocket for the weapon I was told to always carry. Whenever I felt in danger when I did, I made sure it was loaded and ready. When I pulled out my gun, that's when I knew I was going to meet the person. "Who is there?!" I asked frantically, holding my gun to my chest, ready to fire. When nobody answered, I turned around, which was a big mistake, as a tall muscular man towered over me. I pointed my gun at him, but he gripped the barrel and shifted the gun out of my hand, then basically uno reversed me as he pointed my gun at me. The man who was towering over me was no one other than my bodyguard. "Got to try harder Daisy, next time it won't be me who will try and kill you," he said in his deep voice. I kept my poster up when I rolled my eyes towards him and then placed my hand out, he then gave me my gun back. I then went towards my car but found out it was gone. I turned back around with my arms crossed, my face was redder than a tomato. "Where the f**k is my car?!" I demanded as I stood up against him. Even though he is taller, I still will not back down. "I had it towed back to the house. You are riding with me, we have a funeral to go to" he said, his demeanor didn't change. I knew that he was serious, but I wanted to protest to him. "I do not want to ride with you. I DROVE my car here for a reason. Plus, I have plans tonight, so I do not want to go to my mother's stupid funeral" I said to him with a little bit of attitude. When his eyes went dark as he stepped closer to me, basically towering over me again, he grabbed my arm tightly but not too tight to hurt, but it was still tight. He then lowered himself as he whispered in my ear; "You ARE going to ride with me... We have a funeral to go to" he growled in my ear. I knew there was no fighting or arguing with him when he made up his mind, so I just grumbled and then went to his car. "This isn't fair," I whispered under my breath, then slammed his car door.
