Sage slides down the door as tears fall. " I thought she was the one" she says to no one in particular. " I don't understand where it all went so wrong." she sighs gets up and looks at her son. " Well I guess it's just you and me now kiddo." she smiles through the tears as her son walks over to her and hugs her knees.
" I think you deserve better Mom she was so mean all the time and didn't want me around " her son Hal says. "I thought things would change that I could change her guess I was wrong." she sighs once more then heads to the kitchen. "He Hal would you like to eat at home or would you want to go out?" Sage calls hoping he chooses to go out. She is drained after such a horrible past three days.
"I want to go to Big Boys" Hal calls back so excited to have just his Mom and him going out to eat. "Okay baby grab your shoes and put on a jacket it's been getting cooler in the evenings again. " I will Mom" he yells back.
As they got in the car Sage had a few questions brewing in her mind that have been bothering her since Hal said things earlier. "Hey Hal can I ask you a few questions baby?" Hall looks up and nods his head. "Be honest okay. Did you really feel like April was pushing you out of our little family?" she asks cautiously. " You didn't notice it cuz she was sneaky about it, but any chance I got to be around you was cuz I threatened to tell you that I was feeling left out. April didn't want me around and she made me feel like I wasn't allowed to be your son if she was with you." Hal said in a rush hoping his mom wouldn't get too at him.
Sage starts to tear up again. "I am so sorry baby I never meant to make you feel that way. I thought you and April got along well. I'm so sorry I was too blinded by my feelings to see what she was doing to you, to us." Sage parks the car and looks at her son. " Hal you are my world you are the best thing that has ever happened to me and you will always have the biggest peace of my heart. I will not ever let anything come between you and I again." She sticks out her pinky and tells Hal that it's a promise.
Two months later
Sage sits at a picnic table at work scrolling through her phone when she comes across an ad for a dating website just for lesbians and transgender people. "I think this might be a sign for me to move on and see what else is out there" she thinks to herself out loud. So she takes the plunge and signs up. " Okay well that should take a few days for things to settle. Sage goes home and makes dinner for her son then puts him to bed. As she settles in for the night she looks at her phone and wonders if maybe she should look at some of the candidates.
As she scrolls through the list of odd things people are saying she spots Kevin. They seem nice open about why they are on there and what they are about. Sage then feels like this is someone she should know. So, she sends a simple message with one word. "Hi" then turns off her phone and goes to bed
