Chapter 6

/Kurt's pov/ "No, dude, they've given up! She makes it her particular goal to evict them from the premises. I believe she sees it as a challenge of some type for her. "Her longest streak so far is four days," he said with a chuckle. When a lump developed in my throat, I swallowed it without hesitation. "So, she doesn't want a guard in close proximity, or what?" I inquired. What exactly is it with this girl? Maybe she needs to be aware of the dangers against her in order for her to be more easily protected, since I have no intention of giving up on her. "No, she doesn't want any security at all," I believe she tolerates me because I remain out of her way and maintain a certain amount of space. She is not a fan of that. She prefers to be alone rather than in a group. She has gone through a lot and it has transformed her," he said, his tone light and carefree. "Does she have any idea that I'm coming?" With my gaze fixed on the fields below us as we flew overhead, I inquired. He chuckled in hushed tones. “Yeah.” When I returned my gaze to his, he shook his head and chuckled once more. I nodded my head in agreement. He made it clear that she didn't want me to be there based on his reaction. "I received your paperwork from Senator Spencer. "How in the world did a person like you, who's at the top of his class and the academy's new golden boy, wind up with such a crappy assignment?" he said, his eyes wide with curiosity. I closed my eyes and put my chin on the back of the passenger seat. "I have absolutely no clue," I admitted. I was still pondering the same question in my head. I understood the significance of it, but surely there was someone else who could have done the job who had a history in protection who was available. I kept my mouth shut for the remainder of the journey. Eventually, after what seemed like an eternity, we arrived in front of a magnificent mansion that overlooked the lake. When Dean led me into the home, I made an effort not to be overwhelmed by its sheer enormity. In the midst of trudging after him, I marveled at the authentic oak floors, thick draperies, and beautifully framed artwork on the walls. It looked like it came straight out of a magazine. Dean came to a halt outside a door and struck up a conversation with a woman seated at a desk; she looked to be in her mid-fifties and smiled at me as she passed. I smiled, cleared my throat, and extended my hand as a welcome. "Greetings, ma'am. "Kurt Weller, it's a pleasure to finally meet you." Her eyes widened as her gaze swept over me, and she reached out and placed her hand in mine. "It's a pleasure to meet you as well. Hello, my name is Maddy Richards, and I work as Senator Spencer's Personal Assistant in the Senate. In a businesslike tone, she said, "I'll just let him know you're here, and he'd like to talk with you," she said. She took up the phone and chatted for a short period of time. "All right, he's free right now, so you can come in." She indicated in the direction of a door on my right. My nerves were jangling as I realized that I was going to meet the man who many believe would become the next President of the United States. I swallowed my anxieties and entered the building as directed. On the other side of the room was a woman who was drinking tea on the couch and sat behind a huge oak desk. She was incredibly attractive, with dark brown hair that she had tied up into a bun and brown eyes that matched her skin tone. She appeared to be recognizable to me; perhaps I'd seen her on television or something. Senator Spencer strolled up to me, a smile on his face, and extended his hand to shake mine. On television, he appeared to be a commanding presence, but in person, his presence was even more evident. He exuded self-assurance and competence, and he exuded a certain aura of authority that explained why he was widely predicted to win the impending election. I firmly extended my hand to shake his. "It's a pleasure to finally meet you, sir." "It goes for you as well, Agent Weller. "This is Abigail, my lovely wife." He made a motion towards the lady sitting on the couch. After a moment's thought, I turned and grinned as it finally occurred to me why she had been so familiar when I walked into the room. She had a similar appearance to Jane, but Jane possessed a brilliant beauty that was considerably superior to her mother's. "It's a pleasure to meet you, ma'am," I said, nodding. "It goes for you as well. "I'm hoping you'll be around for a little longer than the other nearby guards; Jane needs some stability," she stated with sadness. Senator Spencer swallowed hard and cleared his throat. "So, Agent Weller, I've gone over your file, and I have to admit, it's rather amazing," I add. You have an excellent reputation within the agency. "They have extraordinarily high expectations for you," they say. He motioned for me to take a seat on the couch. "I'm assuming you've gone through your brief?" I nodded my head in agreement and sat where I was told. Are there any questions you'd want to ask before you meet Jane?" I smiled and nodded. "There is just one, sir. In light of the threats, I was wondering why you didn't just inform Miss Spencer of them so that she would be more forthcoming with her security guards. The ability to protect her and eventually make her safer would be much enhanced if she were more amenable." Mrs Spencer let out a gasp, and the Senator shook his head vehemently in response. "Jane is really vulnerable. Despite the fact that she doesn't like to admit it, she is still mourning for Sam and the harm the beast caused her." The man took a long breath and then clinched his fist again to regain his composure before continuing. "She can't be told," I said. "I already liked this man." She's already struggling to keep up with everything, she doesn't need anything extra to worry about on top of it." He got to his feet and headed to his desk, where he picked up his phone. "Maddy, could you kindly have Jane come into the room right away?" His expression was still sorrowful, with a profound anguish running through it. This dad was preoccupied with concerns for his daughter, which is something that no father should ever have to go through. When I was reading her file, I had completely forgotten about them. However, when I reflected on the situation, I realized that they had also been through hell. Their sixteen-year-old daughter goes away and is assumed dead, only to be discovered months later, damaged, mistreated, and a completely different person than she was before. Their only option was to stand by and watch her fall into melancholy, try suicide, and transform into a cold, cruel individual, and now they couldn't even embrace or hold her hand anymore. The phone on the desk rang, and Maddy's voice could be heard through the intercom system. 'Senator, Jane has arrived,' she informed him. "All right, Maddy, send her in," the Senator said, looking at me with an almost sorry smile on his face. She stepped into the room a few seconds later, and everyone gasped. It was clear as soon as I lay eyes on her that I was in serious trouble. She appeared to be terribly fragile at all times. Her eyes were icy and distant, and I couldn't stand to think of the grief she was holding within. She had witnessed things that no one should ever have to witness. Not only had John ruined her physically, but he had also crushed her spirit. Her gaze merely shifted to mine for a fraction of a second and she showed no sign of emotion before she returned her attention to her father. My gut was in a knot and my heart skipped a beat when I realized what had happened. I wished I could go up to her and put my arms around her, reassuring her that everything would be fine. I wished to bring a smile on her face and hear her giggle. Oh f**k it, I'm in serious trouble now! /Jane/ When my mobile phone vibrated on the side of my bed, I was resting there with my arm across my face, attempting to block off the midmorning sun that was flooding through my window from the other direction. Groaned and rolled to one side, reaching my arm out to grab for the object in question. Every single one of my muscles erupted in anger at the tiniest of movements. My entire body ached as a result of the morning run that I'd done earlier in the day. I'd pushed myself a little too far today. As a result of my first-thing conversation with my father, where I learned that I would be receiving a new near guard today, as well as the bombshell that he had dropped on me about the man posing as my boyfriend, I vented my frustrations by running on the treadmill until I vomited and was on the verge of collapsing and almost passing out. Eventually, I was able to grasp my phone with my fingertips and press it to my ear while looking up at the ceiling. "Wait, what?" The subject of this conversation was already clear to me as I grumbled into the phone. My father had informed me that I would receive a phone call when the new guard arrived, and that I would be responsible for showing him around the home and getting to know him in preparation for the following week, when we both started at the new school. Maddy's excessively happy voice welcomed me as I walked in the door. "Hello, Jane. Could you kindly make your way down to your father's office? Agent Weller has arrived, and he would want to introduce himself to you." I sighed and closed my eyes, knowing I'd lost the battle. "All right, I'll be there in a minute." "Fine, I'll be there right away." When Mom didn't answer the phone, I hung up before she could say anything and walked out of my room on my unsteady knees. Throughout the house, I kept my gaze fixed on the ground, hoping that no one would approach me and try to communicate with me. They didn't bother trying very frequently anymore since I'd made it apparent to everyone that I didn't want to contact with them.
