The Accident
ROSALIE’s POV "Your brother has been involved in a serious accident." The pen slipped from my fingers, and my grip on my phone tightened. "What?" I stared at the stack of admission papers spread across my desk, suddenly unable to understand a single word written on them. "I'm calling from Mooncrest General Hospital," the woman continued. "Are you Rosalie Harper?" My pulse thundered in my ears. "Yes, but—" "Your brother was just brought in. His condition is critical." Critical? "No." There had to be a mistake. Levi couldn't be in critical condition. My brother was the strongest person I knew; he’d been both my guardian and protector since the death of our parents. He worked two jobs to keep food on our table, including joining the Hellbound MC club. "No," I repeated weakly. "You have the wrong person." "I'm sorry, Miss Harper. We need you to come to the hospital immediately." The room suddenly felt shaky; my heart thumped so loudly in my chest that I feared it’d burst from the pain my brain struggled to process. My gaze landed on the photo pinned above my desk. It was a picture of Levi standing beside his motorcycle, his familiar cocky grin on his face, his arm slung around my shoulders. Just yesterday, he'd teased me about overpacking for my first year of college. Everything had been fine. "What happened?" I whispered. There was a short pause before the nurse said quietly, "I'm afraid I don't have those details." The call ended shortly after. Fųck! I had to go. I stood up with a jolt, causing my chair to crash to the floor as I bolted for the door. My mind was in a daze when I hailed a cab, and throughout the ride to the hospital, I found myself hoping it’d all been a mistake and that there was somehow another Levi Harper living in Mooncrest Pack. Despite my will to cling to that hope, deep down I knew that was unlikely, especially when, after spamming Levi’s phone with texts and calls, it had gone unanswered. “You’ve got to make it, Levi, please…” I said under my breath. When I arrived at the hospital, I was just in time to see Levi being rolled out of the emergency room and further down the white hallway. Everything else blurred, and all I could see was the weaker and less healthy version of my brother. There was blood everywhere, on the hospital bed, the doctors' gloves, and the floor beneath the wheels as they rushed him down the hallway. "Levi!" I ran towards him and reached for his hands while still rushing to keep up with the pace of the nurses wheeling him in. Still, now looking at him covered in blood, his normally tanned skin now so pale with his shirt cut open by the paramedics, and as he struggled to keep his eyes open due to his fatigue, I still found it hard to believe this was all happening. From the corner of my eye, I see the silhouette of four men trailing behind us, but I barely pay attention to any of that. "Levi, look at me," I begged. “Where are you taking him to? Is he going to be okay? What happened to him? I asked the nurse, yet my eyes remained locked on Levi. “Rosalie…” I heard a deep voice call from behind me, but I paid no attention to it. That wasn’t my question. Why was no one saying anything? “Levi, please, you’re going to be fine, right?” I choked out through sobs. "Rosie..." Levi’s voice came out strained, as it took so much willpower to speak. f**k, I hated seeing him like this. The last time I saw someone this way, they never made it back to me, and I couldn’t lose my brother, too. "I'm here," I whispered. The doctors continued pushing him toward the operating room. One nurse tried to pull me back, but I refused to let go. “Miss, could you please let go? We have to take your brother in for an emergency surgery, and I need you to come to the other room with me to sign the consent form,” the nurse said gently. My chest tightened when I felt the slight squeeze my brother gave my hand as he forced a smile, like he wanted to reassure me that, despite everything, it’s going to be okay. Before I could say anything else, his eyes shifted behind me, and he said in a low voice. “If I don’t make it, please promise me just one thing. That you guys would take care of my sister the same way I’d always done,” “Definitely, we promise you that.” I looked back toward the voice, finally acknowledging the presence of our company. Four tall men stood behind me, all wearing leather jackets that had the name “Hellbound MC” imprinted on their collars. I recognized them easily, having seen them a couple of times before now, although I’d never spoken to them in the past, since my brother liked to keep me separated from his biker club activities, and that included these men. Adrian, Theodore, Lucian, and Felix. The powerful quadruplet alphas who ruled Hellbound MC and my brother’s best friends. “Come with us; your brother is going to be fine,” Lucian said. He looked like he didn’t believe those words himself, but still, I found myself following him, giving the doctors room to do their job. When I finished signing the consent form, I sat down mechanically in the waiting area, my hands stained with my brother's blood. My fingers trembled so violently I couldn't stop them. My gaze remained fixed on the operating room doors, silently praying to the moon goddess for a successful surgery. Several hours passed, but my eyes didn’t waver from the door; my heart jumped whenever I saw doctors exit the door, expecting an update on my brother’s condition, but instead they walked past me without a glance in my direction. After what felt like an eternity, the doors opened again, and this time it was a familiar doctor who was with Levi earlier. I shot up to my feet when he started walking in our direction. The surgeon slowly removed his mask and uttered the two words I dreaded the most. "I'm... sorry." I immediately froze, zoning out as he continued to speak, my ears only catching the last of his words, “he didn’t make it”. No, No, No! I shook my head violently, and my knees gave way, causing me to drop to the floor in agony. "No... please bring back my brother!” I wailed. "I'm sorry," the doctor repeated. "He lost too much blood." Something inside me shattered, and a scream tore from my throat before I even realized it. "No!" I covered my face with my hands, feeling it get drenched with my tears I didn’t realize were there. Felix dropped beside me and wrapped his hands around my shoulders hesitantly. When I didn’t protest, he pulled me closer in a warm hug. My cry of agony muffled through his leather jacket, and I allowed myself to sink into his embrace for several minutes, drawing as much comfort as I could. Although it did nothing to ease the pain I felt in my chest, I appreciated the comfort. “We’ll take care of the hospital bill and the following expenses to give Levi the rest he deserves.” Adrian, the eldest of the quadruplets, said. “Rosalie?” Felix said, pulling away slightly to look at me. “Give me your phone for a moment, please,” He asked politely. I was too drained to ask why and simply fished it out of my pocket and handed it to him. Felix dapped on it for a bit before handing it back to me. “There,” he began. “I’ve saved mine and my brother’s contact to your phone. I need you to call any of us if you need anything. Do you understand?” My eyes darted from him to his brothers, who stood beside us, watching me closely. “We mean that,” Lucian reassured. “Okay, I will,” I nodded. “We’re going to take care of you now, Rosalie,” Theodore forced a smile in an attempt to calm me down.
