Chapter 29

MORGIANA'S POV "What the heck?" I muttered as I saw all the vampires falling down to the ground all at once. There were at least ten of them and then they just dropped dead. Are they dead? I looked at Alaris with wide eyes and then at Hawke who was folding his sleeves. "What just happened? I heard a snap. Are they dead?" "They are. For the time being," answered Alaris. "But they're going to wake up soon so we have to leave," said Hawke and we all walked towards the car and Alaris immediately drove it away. I looked behind and saw the vampires still lying on the ground and that's the moment that I realize just how powerful Hawke is. I swallowed hard as I sat properly on the backseat. "By any chance, did you know of a witch that helped my parents conceive me?" I asked out of the blue. I honestly don't know if it was okay to ask but then I saw Hawke looking over at me through the rearview mirror. "I was waiting you'd ask," he said and my eyes widened as I looked at him. "You mean you know who it was?" Hawke then looked at Alaris as though silently asking why Alaris hadn't told me. "She didn't ask. And there are things better left unsaid and better she figure it out herself." I gave Alaris an incredulous look but he wasn't looking at me. He wasn't looking at the rearview mirror either. Hawke sighed and then said, "Her name was Magda." "Was? Where is she now?" "Nobody really knew where she is. I knew her because before me, she was the coven leader of the witch clan of Great Oaks." I don't know what to feel about it. A coven leader helped a vampire and a wolf conceive a child. Witches are known to balance the supernatural world. I mean, that's basically what they're made to do. But Magda, she helped my parents. And she even performed a spell on me so that my being a hybrid would be concealed. "Why would she do that? Isn't that not allowed? Why did she help my parents?" Some part in me blame them for my life. It was just unfair that they let me be born into this cruel world being different. Being targeted by both species. It was unfair that they left me alone, clueless until just a week ago. If I happened to not help Giro that night the wolves were hunted, I would have been dead a week ago. "Did they just let me born to die?" I asked and they both went quiet. I know Alaris was especially guilty since he was the one who wanted to kill me. He was the one who had been watching and waiting until I turned eighteen before letting me see the darker side of the world I was living in. "Magda was a respected witch," Hawke said. "After she helped your parents, she just disappeared. I don't know where she had gone but we only knew about it many years after. Turns out, she had been helping your parents for many years. Experimenting on magic so your parents could conceive you. That was many years ago. Before this town even came to be." "I don't understand." "Conceiving you took many years. Before this town was established, there were already witches led by Magda. Your parents came to her for help and for some reason, she helped them. For years of trying, Magda said she was successful at helping them. Magic is a complicated thing, Morgiana. One that shouldn't be experimented with." "Basically I am the result of bad practice. And I am very confused with the numbers." Hawke sighed and looked at me once again in the rearview mirror. "I think you were born right before this town was established." What the hell. "Does that make me an old lady, then? How did that happen, though?" "Perhaps Magda slowed down your aging process. But over time, you still aged and you reached the age of 18 when the spell was set to be broken and Magda wouldn't have done it for just no reason. I believe there is a reason why she helped your parents." I still can't believe that I could be over fifty years old but I will worry about that later. "And we don't know that reason?" "We don't," he answered and I went silent at that. We were silent the whole ride and I was just looking outside the window and behind the car too to see if there were any of the vampires chasing us. But during that time, I was able to ponder what Hawke said. That there must be some reason why my parents wanted to conceive me so badly. And as I thought about it, the thought of my parents being unfair was becoming a blur. Because deep down, I didn't want to think they were being unfair. I wanted to think about the reason. There must have been some reason. And for that, while riding in the car on our way home, I promised myself I would find out whatever the reason it was. *** The camp was quiet when we arrived. Well, Laurent was downtown together with Arleigh and some of the wolves were sent to the borders together with some witches from Hawke's coven. It was better to be sure these vampire attacks won't happen again. Even though this town is warded by the witches' magic, some vampires can apparently still get in with the help of another witch's magic. I was walking back to my cabin when I saw Giro sitting on my porch. He wasn't wearing a bandage anymore and he was looking healthier than the last I saw him. As I got closer, I almost gasped at his resemblance to his brother, Laurent. He saw me coming and he immediately stood and straightened his shirt. I admit I am still scared of being left alone with the other wolves except for Laurent and Alaris but looking at Giro, I realized he looks younger than me. "How old are you?" I asked and he furrowed his brows at my random question. "I'm...five years younger than Laurent." "And how old is Laurent?" "You wouldn't want to know." "Try me." "He's a hundred." "So you're 95." I suddenly felt stupid for thinking he was younger than me. I mean I might be over fifty but he's still older than me. "You're eighteen, right?" I let out a sarcastic laugh. "Wrong. I'm fifty-ish." He was giving me a confused look that I had to pat his shoulder. "Your brother's downtown if you're looking for him. He's with a vampire." "Why is he with her?" he asked quietly and I turned to see his reaction. "He shouldn't be with that vampire," he said. "Why not?" "He just shouldn't be. Vampires are our enemies. That vampire would kill him." I turned to face him again. "First of all, I know Arleigh is a bully but she wouldn't kill your brother. Second, your brother is strong and Arleigh is a weak vampire. Between them, Arleigh is likely to die, and hopefully, that's not going to happen. Third, you're not worried your brother would be killed. You're more worried they'd do something against what this world believe is right. Fourth, I am a vampire too and yet I saved your ass back there when they were dragging you to the ground. Arleigh is a vampire but it wasn't her fault. Just like it wasn't my fault to be born a hybrid." He was looking at me as though he wanted to say something but couldn't find the right words to say. I let out a sigh. "I understand your concern, Giro. I really do. But your brother already agreed and we can trust him. We can trust Arleigh too." He didn't say anything and looked away. Then he said, "I...I am grateful to you for saving my life, Morgiana. And I will be grateful to you for the rest of my life. I was only saying why I said earlier because I ... don't have a good experience with vampires. But you're a vampire too and you still saved me—I'm sorry." I couldn't take the sad look on his face I crossed the distance between us and hugged him. He went still for a moment but then I felt his arm wrapping around me. "I understand. Now stop worrying about your brother—" I almost fell down to the ground when I felt someone holding my arm. One moment I was hugging Giro and the next moment, Alaris was dragging me back to the cabin. "What the hell, Alaris?" I said and I looked back at Giro who was just as confused as I am at first but then his eyes widened. Before I could call him, he turned around and disappeared. Alaris got me inside the cabin and slammed the door behind him a little too strongly. "Why are you hugging him?" I gave him a confused look. "What is it to you if I was hugging him? Do you have some sort of rule not to hug each other here?" "Answer the question, Morgiana." "I don't need to answer your questions, Alaris because I don't see the need to explain myself to you." He turned and punched the door which made me jolt. "For gods' sake. I'm sorry if I wasn't aware of some forbidden rule about hugging someone. Why are you reacting like this?" "It's not about a rule, Morgiana," he said, and that even made me more confused. I've never seen him like this. What the heck is going on? I rolled my eyes. "Calm yourself down and let me sleep. Talk to me tomorrow minus the punching and angry faces." I was about to walk back to my bedroom when suddenly he was in front of me. Damned wolf speed. "I don't want to go out because I might end up killing Giro." My eyes widened at what he said. "Seriously, what is wrong with you? We just hugged! If it was so wrong then forgive me for not knowing, okay? You can't kill someone just because of that." I saw how his jaw tightened as though he was just stopping himself from doing something. "I get extremely jealous when you're touching another man." I blinked as I looked into his eyes. "Excuse me?" "f**k. You heard what I said " he said, frustration visible on his face. I did hear it. I just didn't expect that. Or did I hear it correctly? Maybe I misheard something. "Okay," I said, raising my hand. But before I could even say another thing, he went on. "I just...found out you're my mate." "Mate. What the heck does that even mean?" He ran his hand down his face as if to contain his frustration. Why is he getting frustrated that I didn't know it? "You'd have to be patient with me, Alaris. You know I had just found out I was a hybrid—" I wasn't able to say more when the next thing I felt was his lips on mine. I stood frozen and when he pulled back, his face was still inches away. "Kiss me back Morgiana and you will know what I mean," he said, almost in a whisper. And I was too stunned to say something and maybe too stunned to think clearly that I nodded. With that, I felt his lips on mine again. Only this time, it was more intense.
