ONE
KATHRYN
I finally settle for an amber-colored dress, it resonates with my iris and makes me all the more charming. It has a slit by the side, that stops at the middle of my thigh, exposing an alluring amount of my bare skin.
I don my hair in a knot and smear lip gloss on my full lips. Picking up the bottle of perfume, I bathe myself in its last drop. Satisfied, I step out of the mirror and head outside, where Ella and Jason are impatiently waiting for me.
"Jeez, Kathie?" Her eyes are wide and her expression is vague.
Jason manages to scoff, still gawking at me.
Jason is wearing all black and Ella, a very dark shade I can't place that could literally pass for black.
"I'm sorry I took forever,” I pout. "but, I’m ready.” I sway my hips.
"No, you're not.” She says it in a matter-of-fact way. "Isn't this like your favorite dress?” she rolls her eyes. "And you even stole from my makeup kit, something I practically force you to wear on the best of days and you would turn it down.”
"We're going to the pack house.” I grin. "It's a good thing.”
"Okay? It's a funeral regardless.” She bluffs.
"It's a funeral...in the pack house.” I restate. "It won't be as boring as other funerals. It will be interesting, I can stake my bet.”
"What should be interesting about a funeral in the pack house?” Jason speaks for the first time. "It's literally watching the body of our former alpha burn to ashes.” He sniffs.
"Everything. Look, I know I may not have been to the pack house like you both, but my hunch never lies.” I close my eyes and sniff the humid air. "The environment would add bliss...” I finish abruptly.
I begin walking in hurried strides, not waiting for them to catch up or convince me otherwise.
“Argh.” Ella groans. "At least, slow down a bit.”
The walk to the pack house is far, freaking far but worth it. If it were a few meters from my house, I would sneak a peek tens of times. It explains why I'm yet to see the beauty beyond the large gate.
We arrived quite late, thanks to me.
Jason goes about hugging friends and families and sobbing on their shoulders. Ella, being the sociable one, blends in with the crowd and I just remain like a statue, gawking at the guests with beautiful skin tones and classic black dresses with shiny black diamonds and stones.
Aside from crowning a new alpha, it's the only ceremony that brings the highest of caliber and lowest together. And I’m not so fortunate to witness any, not like I wish the alphas dead, but it won't be a bad idea still.
As fire is set to the woods where the alpha’s body is leveled, it blooms. The sound of flames kissing his cold and stiff body, and the horrible stench make me want to gag.
And then the incessant wailing, like they knew the alpha on a personal level. From afar, I see Ella weeping in the bosom of a random person, I try to mask the emotion, but the rush of adrenaline pulsing through my veins isn't helping.
Already getting bored, I begin to stroll out. Indeed, it's more boring than envisaged. At least for regular funerals, I get to know the people and mourn for a minute or two.
Checking the sad moment off my list, I decided to free my full bladder. I go through the back, not wanting to draw attention.
"How may I be of help to you?”
The cold voice of a guard startles me. I stand straight, gaining composure.
“I want to use the bathroom.”
"Go down the hallway and take your left.” With that, he continues sobbing.
Is this like a virus, ignoring him, I take his direction and see the bathroom alas. The walls are neatly tiled and clean, and so is the floor. It's far better than the one I'm used to, to be honest, it's more comfy than my home.
For a second, I contemplate spending my night here. Done using the bathroom, I walk out, and curious, I twist the knob of a door. It's locked. And then another, and another, till I’m exhausted.
Not wanting to return to the awkward funeral, I bypass the guard and make my way to the other side of the humongous compound, which is not so bright.
A fine blend of earth and musk wafts into my nostrils, intoxicating me like strong alcohol. I remain in a spot, sniffing my life away. With one step at a time, the sweet smell pulls me farther into the forest.
I ought to be scared, but I find it rather intriguing. The beauty, the steel scent, the serenity... I long to be here forever.
What would it be like to live in such luxury? I don’t mind, even as a maid, after all an Omega is by nature one.
Still curious and tipsy from the alluring smell, I wander farther into the forest, and before me is the coolest maze garden. It's high, well-trimmed and catered for. Its fresh rich green leaves bloom.
Oddly, I hear a faint sob, and then a snort... Are the leaves crying too, I wonder. For a minute, I listen harder for the noise which comes at intervals. While the place is silent as hell, I run my fingertips through the leaves and yet again, the sweet smell comes stronger, too strong to resist.
In harmony, I let it lead me into the garden that's like a puzzle, not knowing my end from my start. I didn't really bother if I went missing, Jason and Ella won't leave me behind.
As it leads me, it fills me and renders me helpless. And as I let go of my willpower, the sob grows louder.
There's a double lane here, like a draft and I turn to take my right. Not having a mind of my own, I go with the left and wander down, still in love with the scenery.
I squint my eyeballs to be sure I'm seeing right. Before me is a huge and well-sculpted frame, with rich dark hair. My fingers twitch, and the urge of wanting to take them in it, intensifies. His back is to me as he sobs and for a moment, I go rigid.
