Chapter 1

The honey-coloured fur bounced with each bounding step she took as the sunlight peered through the trees hitting her fur making it seem as though it had golden flecks. Large paws thudding against the dirt, the pads of her feet enjoying the feeling of nature. Aerly loved to run especially in the brisk morning weather. The bare branches rattled against one another from the cool winds that rushed through the wooded area but each sound was different, each sound was unique and out there deep in the woods it was beautiful especially this time of year in fall it was perfect when the leaves crunched beneath her heavy paws or when the rain came overhead letting her fur be drenched under the cooling droplets while her paws would become ingrossed in the mud beneath her. Simple pleasures to enjoy from their loving Moon Goddess above. However, today was different she wouldn't be able to enjoy the pleasures of it all instead Aerly's run was more cathartic. She had been working towards becoming the leader of the sanctuary since she was nine years old when her Father Will established the place, a safe place for all the wolves who needed it and last night her father retired, stepped down from his position. All the wolves gathered under the bright full moon illuminating the sky as her father stood before them announcing her younger brother Eli was to take over duties as the leader of the sanctuary leaving everyone shocked and Aerly devastated. All her work seemingly for nothing. At the clearing Aerly emerged Gracefully and smoothly shifting to her human self the honey-coloured waves that hung to her naval matched the fur of her wolf, the lean creature even held similar delicate features such as her long slender face, glistening silver eyes and perfectly arched cheekbones. Like a goddess she was strong and proud as she stepped now welcoming the cool air against her bare flesh, Aerly's slender fingers were stretched out letting the tall blades of grass brush across her palms and fingertips enjoying the tickling sensation. "How did I know you were out here" the voice made her eyes dart across her surroundings until landing on the figure to who had spoken.  Noah Miller stood before her a small smile gracing his clean-shaven face while his darkened eyes turned away bashfully. Noah wasn't a leader but a warrior something Aerly had respected of the man but it was his caring nature that had captured her affections. "Oh Noah, don't pretend it is the first time you have seen me naked" Aerly teased but he didn't respond instead held up her golden silk robe with sewn with delicate flowers decorating it. She cherished it greatly one of the only pieces she had of her mother. "I'm sorry about what happened" he spoke as he helped guide the piece of clothing along her slender arms and over her almost caramel coloured shoulders. "Yes well, not much can be done" Aerly turned to face the young man as she tied her robe closed. "Aerly..." Noah reached out and brushed his fingers gently over the smooth skin of her cheek immediately catching her attention "I know you're a strong wolf but I also know your father worries." She simply scoffed "Father was a strong Alpha as was my mother it was only natural I would become one. There is no need to be worried about me." "But as strong as you are Aerly it leaves things open..." he let out a sigh but continued to brush his fingers across her cheek caressing her skin with care. "Open..." she shook her head and much to his disappointment pushed his hand away "my mother and father weren't even mates nor did they find them. He shouldn't be concerned I've no interest even if they were found. My dedication and loyalty remains here as it always has.." "You know how much I care for you, Aer even this place but this isn't something you can control you're an Alpha but also a she-wolf" he spoke softly to her but it only irritated Aerly more. She was a grown woman now of twenty-two, not a child who was on the verge of a tantrum. "You have known me for seven years, Noah" Aerly scoffed stepping away from man who wasn't much taller than herself but none the less she raised her gaze with pride "I have never let anything get in the way of my duty" Aerly began to hurry off. Her powerful strides taking her to the heart of the Sanctuary. -- It didn't take her long before getting back to the house her father resided in with her stepmother and half brother. None of the homes was large it was more a peaceful community than actual pack just ordinary little cabin-like homes giving each person their privacy however her fathers was the first built on the land with its beautiful beams that ran across the ceilings and recycled wooden flooring it was truely classic to look at despite it only being thirteen years old. "Aer, finally you're back" Eli her younger brother spoke standing on the front porch, his slender arms crossed over his thin build. The pair were half-siblings but the resemblance was obvious despite the glistening silver irises and silky tan skin the young man held similar bone structure and beautiful, thick waves of honey-coloured hair. "I only went for a run little brother" Aerly stepped closer to the house as her glistening eyes focused on Eli. "All night..." he simply leaned himself against one of the beams that supported the roof of the front porch "We have all been worried about you." "Where is father?" Aerly simply waved her brother off with her hand. "Father is busy in his study trying to wrap up one of his last duties as a leader. He is preparing for an important meeting" Eli simply explained. "What important meeting?" Aerly was quick to snap and immediately Eli had regretted saying anything. "A meeting tomorrow. Apparently, some wolf wants to talk business and father has to prepare because the wolf is from one of the old packs" as soon as Eli said that Aerly couldn't even hide the dislike crossing her face. Aerly did not like the old packs they were arrogant thinking they were true descendants of the moon goddess since they were purebloods, true Lycans with their pure white wolves they believed in the old ways the males possessive and vicious while the females meek and submissive it was distasteful in this age and certainly not something Aerly was pleased to hear that they were going to be visiting the Sanctuary. "Why would they even come here? They detest this place. It doesn't abide by their ridiculous rules of life" Aerly couldn't hide the snarl as she spoke. "It isn't our business sister. Father is dealing with this last thing after he officially steps down" Aerly couldn't hide her scowl at the mention.  "Hopefully they aren't here long or here to cause problems. This is a safe place for wolves we have no need for trouble" Aerly attempted to ease herself more than her little brother. "I don't think they will be here long, Aer. It's just a meeting after all" Eli attempted to smooth the situation. As graceful and with great etiquette that was how Aerly seemed not the actual hot head that lied beneath the surface. "What is with the chatter out here?" the siblings both turned to the now open wooden door where their father stood. Clearly once an imposing man, standing tall, strong and terribly proud the golden waves that matched his children were now littered with greying streaks. The once alpha was aged gracefully. "I wanted to speak to you about last night, father" Aerly quickly answered. "I thought you would still be on your run Aer" William spoke. "Father--" Aerly began till he was quickly cut him off. "There is nothing to talk about, Aerly. I have made my decision" he spoke firmly to his daughter. "But father--" "If you didn't run off suddenly last night you would have heard your new role in the Sanctuary" Will cut her off but the words were quick to catch her attention. "And what is that?" she asked curiously. "You will be second in command of the warriors of the Sanctuary. It will be your duty to train them and then when Mitchel steps down you will take over in command" he explained but the role irritated Aerly. "Father--" Eli attempted to interrupt once again but was quickly dismissed by his father. "I have made my decision and you will respect it. Eli will be in charge after tomorrow and you will be helping with the warriors am I clear" Will commanded of the pair. "Yes father" Eli was quick to submit but Aerly sneered. "Will..." Rose spoke as the small brunette emerging from the house. "Yes?" he gave a warm smile to his wife. "What is the matter?" Rose asked curiously looking between the three. "Aerly isn't pleased with my decision.." Will answered. "Aerly, sweetheart. We know how capable you are but you're also a she-wolf. That's why your father thought it would be a good idea to let you help lead the warriors until you were mated" Rose explained but her explanation only made Aerly more furious especially with words such as 'mated'. "I'm not a baby factory just waiting for some male to put his seed in me, I'm certainly not longing for a mate. I do not need some damn dominating male wolf. I thought we were a sanctuary yet here are these rules as though we were apart of the old ways" Aerly snarled. "Do not speak like that" Will scolded the young woman who simply rolled her eyes "go on with your chores for today, Aerly. Tomorrow after your run you will help train the warriors then you will come here. I have a meeting tomorrow and we all must be present and looking respectable. You know how the old packs are--" "Arrogant" Aerly cut in causing her father to shoot her a harsh glare. "I mean it Aerly. I know you're angry but you better be on your best behaviour tomorrow" Will stepped closer his voice softening "I know how much this place means to you so let's make sure nothing happens to it." "Yes, father" Aerly spoke but the kept her head held high. In any usual case, a wolf would bow in submission but not Aerly never Aerly "alright everyone continue with your chores for tomorrow we welcome purebloods..." --
